Khan wants Matthysse fight; thinks he’s got the style to beat him

matthysse100(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) Amir Khan liked what he saw of Lucas Matthysse last night in his easy 3rd round TKO win over Lamont Peterson at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. However, Khan saw things in Matthysse’s fighting style that he feels would enable him to beat the Argentinian and he says he’d like to fight him.

Khan said “I’d love to fight Lucas Matthysse. My style would definitely suit Matthysse and I’d beat him. This wants me to stay at 140.”

Khan is moving up to 147 in his next fight, so it’s easy for him to say all this stuff now about wanting to fight Matthysse when it doesn’t look like it’s doable.

Schaefer wants Garcia-Matthysse and Peterson-Judah for September 7th

matthysse53Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is going to try his best to put together a fight card with Danny Garcia facing Lucas Matthysse and Lamont Peterson taking on Zab Judah for September 7th in Washington, D.C.

Dan Rafael said on his twitter “Schaefer says he has September 7 on hold at Verizon Center in DC for Garcia-Matthysse, hopes to do Peterson-Judah in co-feature.”

I can definitely see Peterson and Judah facing each other because Peterson is pretty fearless and Judah knows he’d have a decent chance of winning this fight if he can get to Peterson’s chin the same way Matthysse did in destroying him in only three rounds last night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Malignaggi: Danny Garcia has enough power to give Matthysse problems

garcia454Showtime analyst Paulie Malignaggi thinks WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia has enough power and talent to give WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse problems if they face each other in September.

Earlier tonight, Matthysse obliterated Lamont Peterson in a 3rd round TKO at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey in a three knockdown performance by Matthysse.

Malignaggi said “Lamont Peterson came out actually trying to box. I thought he had a pretty successful 1st round, but once Matthysse stepped up the pace, stepped up the pressure, started roughing him up in clinches, it became much more difficult for Peterson to deal with. This guy Matthysse has not just power; it’s scary power.

Mosley defeats Cano

mosley445(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) Shane Mosley (47-8-1, 39 KO’s) found the fountain of youth on Saturday night in defeating the tough but limited Mexican fighter Pablo Cesar Cano (26-3-1, 20 KO’s) in winning a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 115-113, 115-113 and 115-113 at the Grand Oasis Resort, in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Mosley was able to land a lot of his power shots tonight, and he gave Cano constant problems with shots as well as with his jabs. Cano was game and despite fighting poorly, he was able to come back late in the fight to stagger Mosley in the 9th round with a hard right hand. Three rounds earlier, Mosley had hurt Cano with a series of hard shots in the 6th.

Matthysse stops Peterson in 3rd; Alexander defeats Purdy

matthysse33Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) totally destroyed Lamont Peterson (31-2-1, 16 KO’s) in a 3rd round knockout on Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Matthysse dropped Peterson three times, once in the 2nd and twice more in the 3rd to get the stoppage. All three knockdowns came from left hooks to the head from Matthysse.

Schaefer: Khan could face Devon Alexander in December

khan4532If IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander can get past challenger Lee Purdy tonight in their fight in Atlantic City, New Jersey, he’ll likely be facing former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan in December, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Rafael said on his twitter “Richard Schaefer saying at ringside that when Amir Khan returns in December it could be for a shot at Devon Alexander.”

If Khan is successful in that fight then the next move that Schaefer will do is look to put Khan in with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in early 2014. What could change those plans is if Mayweather is beaten in his September fight against a still to be determined opponent.

Hopkins willing to fight Froch at catchweight in the UK

froch#7Recently, IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch said he would only be willing to fight 48-year-old IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins at a catchweight rather than moving up 7 pounds to face the nearly 50-year-old Hopkins at the full weight for the division.

Froch felt that he needed a catchweight before he could face Hopkins. Well, Hopkins says he’s agreeable to fighting Froch at a catchweight and he’s even willing to let the fight take place in the UK.

DeGale: I’ll be world champion by the end of year

degale5Super middleweight contender James DeGale (15-1, 10 KO’s) defeated Sebastien Demers (31-6, 11 KO’s) by a 2nd round TKO last night in Quebec, Canada. It wasn’t surprising that DeGale defeated Demers so easily. After all, Demers came into the fight with three straight losses and two of them were early stoppage losses to Renan St. Juste and Brian Vera.

One of the defeats was to Allan Green, a fighter that was taken apart over and over again in the Super Six tournament. What was surprising is DeGale saying he’ll be a world champion by the end of this year.

DeGale said “I will be a world champion by the end of this year.”

Peterson vs. Matthysse: Lamont will have to limit his slugging tonight

005LPetersonIMG_3881(Photo credit: Casino/Showtime) IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO’s) faces Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO’s) in a catchweight fight at 141 lbs. at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Peterson’s title won’t be on the line because the fight will take place one pound over the 140 lb. limit at 141.

Peterson has been saying all week long that he doesn’t have any fear of Matthysse’s power, and that he’s not going to let Matthysse’s reputation for being a huge puncher stop him from fighting his normal fight.

In other words, Peterson plans on walking Mattysse down and standing in front of him all night long to slug it out.

Rafael: Mayweather-Guerrero only sold 870K PPV buys, according to my sources

floyd#30Dan Rafael of ESPN is still standing behind his source for the final pay per view numbers for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Robert Guerrero fight despite Showtime saying that the fight will bring in over 1 million buys when the final tally is in.

Rafael says his source is telling him that the Mayweather-Guerrero final PPV numbers will be only 870,000 PPV buys, a much lower number than what Showtime is saying.

Rafael said on his chat this week: “I have good industry sources who swear on their children that this fight will not reach 1 million buys, much less be ‘in excess’ if 1 million and I believe them. These are people with no dog in the fight who I respect and have known for many years and trust. I am told that the number right now is about 870,000 buys.”
