Newly retired former P4P boss, Floyd Mayweather, has publicly shredded ‘lil bro’, Adrien Broner, for derogatory comments the WBA (sup) 140 lb champion made about Mayweather’s promotional arm.
Broner, who has bizarrely been upgraded to super champion status with the WBA after his one sided win over Khabib Allakhverdiev recently, was once considered by many to be heir apparent to Mayweather, with Floyd himself having been extremely vocal in his support of the Ohio native over the years.
British super-middleweight contender, Martin Murray (32-2-1,15ko), is looking to become world champion at the 4th time of asking when he challenges WBO 168 lb champion, Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29ko) later this month, going so far as to say he will consider retirement if he is unsuccessful.
Murray has moved up to 168 from middleweight, where 3 previous world title tilts have gone against him, the last one being at the hands of destructive Kazakh, Gennady Golovkin, in February, when he extended ‘GGG’ 11 rounds before succumbing – farther than any previous Golovkin opponent.
In a little over two weeks time, Britain’s Tyson Fury, will attempt to dethrone longtime world heavyweight champion, Wladimir Klitschko, in Dusselfdorf, Germany, claiming ahead of the fight that the champion will not only be easy to hit, but that he is clearly feeling the heat in the build up.
Fury, at 6’9″, believes his height, reach and youth advantage (he is almost 12 years younger) will be instrumental in overcoming what is arguably Klitschko’s greatest asset – experience, and says he has definitely unsettled the champion in the build up, something he feels helped bring about the minor Klitschko calf-strain that put the fight back a month.
Timothy Bradley (33-1-1 13KO) was understandably jubilant with his ninth round TKO of Brandon Rios (33-3-1 24KO)at the Thomas and Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV. Everything went according to plan, one that his new trainer Teddy Atlas laid out for him. For much of the fight, Bradley was just too fast for Rios. He ripped off multi-punch combinations so fast that Teddy had to caution him a bit between rounds, telling him that it was okay to once in a while just throw a two or three punch combo and then move. When he wasn’t firing off combo’s, he was moving, side to side, in and out or up and down. Rios just couldn’t time him enough to land a good shot.
Undefeated former World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight world champion NICHOLAS “Axe Man” WALTERS returns to the ring to take on granite-fisted Top-10 contender JASON “El Canito” SOSA in a 10-round junior lightweight rumble. Walters vs. Sosa will take place on Saturday, December 19, at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY. Top Rank’s welterweight contender, Jessie Vargas (26-1, 9ko), is still pushing for a rematch with WBO champion and promotional stablemate, Tim Bradley, insisting his former foe isn’t prepared to do so as he knows he’d end up getting knocked out!
Vargas, who is sitting out the rest of the year after a clash with Golden Boy’s red-hot up and comer, Sadam Ali, fell through for December, interrupted ‘Desert Storm’ at the post fight presser after Saturday’s victory over Brandon Rios, prompting Bradley to remark, ‘Here we go again!’
British cruiserweight contender, Tony Bellew (25-2-1, 16ko), attempts a credible step toward his eventual goal of a cruiserweight world title, facing Poland’s Mateusz Masternak (36-3, 26ko) on Matchroom Sport’s, Dec. 12, ‘Bad Intentions’ show from London’s O2.
Bellew’s promoter Eddie Hearn had promised that the Scouser would be in a ‘credibility fight’ on the show that is headlined by Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte’s British heavyweight title clash, and he has found a decent enough foe in Masternak, who, like Bellew, is ranked within the top 10, WBA/IBF/WBO and #15, WBC.
After teasing fans with the possibility of a final career fight with Gennady Golovkin before just as quickly retiring earlier this year, former super middleweight champion, Carl Froch, is now [predictably] prepared to go back on his promise of never fighting again, insisting he is flirting with the idea of a comeback.
The Marmite-like Froch, a granite chinned warrior in the ring, but an oft-abrasive and divisive personality outside of it, has been entertaining and irritating viewers of Sky Sports in equal measure in his latest role as a pundit and on-screen analyst, although judging by his latest comments it seems he isn’t finding life on the other side of the ropes as satisfying as he at first thought he might do.
Tim Bradley’s new trainer, Teddy Atlas, is potentially getting far too carried away with his new charge’s dominant performance over Brandon Rios last night, suggesting he would like the newly retired Floyd Mayweather to fight him next.
Atlas is being credited with reinvigorating Bradley in the wake of his split from long time trainer, Joel Diaz, and although his performance against Rios was stylish and dominant, it was clearly more down to Rios not showing up than it was anything Atlas did in the build-up, especially given their short time together and the fact Bradley entered the fight a considerable favourite in any case.
After his comprehensive stoppage defeat at the hands of WBO welterweight champion, Tim Bradley, last night, Brandon Rios publicly called time on his career, insisting he just couldn’t ‘pull the trigger,’ and shrugged off the loss with a customary, ‘f*** it!’
Rios had tried in the build up to suggest he wasn’t done yet, and that he had plenty left in the tank, yet it became evident quickly that 10 frustrating months out of the ring had helped kill any desire ‘Bam Bam’ had left, and he had just been paying lip-service with comments about dragging Bradley into a war.
