Mayweather-McGregor: “The Billion Dollar Fight” announcement coming soon says “source”

Could “retired” superstar Floyd Mayweather be set to return to the ring to face UFC star, the also “retired” Conor McGregor? The mega-match, dubbed “The Billion Dollar Fight,” is said to be on the verge of being announced soon, an unidentified “source close to Mayweather” has said. The story first broke in UK tabloid, The Sun, and since then a large number of publications have reported on the news. Twitter has also exploded, with many people saying the talk is just that, talk, and that the fight will never happen.

Still, some people are not ruling it out. Mayeather would pick up a career-high payday, the source says, and this might give “Money” the desire to take the fight.

“Floyd went mad after Conor said he would crush him and knock him out in 30 seconds, he’s obsessed with making Conor eat his words,” the source told The Sun. “Floyd is calling the shots. It’s strictly boxing and Conor will have to lose roughly 25-pounds. It was agreed in principle on May 2, but Floyd wouldn’t reveal the identity of opponent until last night when he told friends he’ll be fighting Conor.”

It would be far easier to make a decision on whether or not there is any real substance to this story if the source didn’t insist on anonymity. If it were, for example, Leonard Ellerbe doing the talking, we would all know the story is the real deal. But who has been talking? According to the mystery figure, Floyd would get a massive $100 million for the fight, while McGregor would pick up $7 million. The fight would take place at The T-Mobile Arena in Vegas.

So, could the fight happen, and if so, who would win? Mayweather will never agree to fight within MMA rules, as the source said, it’s strictly boxing. And in a boxing ring, with the size of the gloves being those he is used to, Mayweather would have a great chance of winning a decision. Would anyone really bet on McGregor outboxing Mayweather!

If – and it is almost certainly a big if; but you never know for sure – the fight happens, it will be interesting to see how many rounds it is scheduled for. But in any boxing ring, with boxing rules, Mayweather would surely remain unbeaten against McGregor, or maybe any MMA fighter for that matter (size permitting). Maybe this one is for real and Mayweather is looking to come back and blow away the competition by engaging in what could be the biggest money-spinner in the sport?

If an official announcement is made this weekend, Mayweather-McGregor would perhaps steal the thunder the Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan fight has generated. Maybe that’s what Floyd is aiming for!
