TARK

Toney was never any different. He never trained hard. He always loved to eat. He always got fat. He always thought he was the best fighter in the history of the sport.

He was a great middleweight. Maybe the most talented middleweight ever. His chin and punching power were both unreal.

Michael Nunn was 36-0, and the world’s #1 rated P4P fighter. Nunn knocked challenger Sumbu Kalambay out with one brutal left hand in the first round.

Sugar Ray Leonard was both ducking Nunn, and doing the expert commentary on Nunn’s fight with Kalambay—which became everybody’s “KO of the Year.”

Leonard said., “Michael Nunn showed he can handle any middleweight out there.”

Leonard was including himself… Toney didn’t hold the same opinion Leonard did. James said, “Nunn is only 36-0 because he hasn’t fought me. I’ll destroy him.”

He damned near did destroy Nunn… That was a brutal KO.

Fat bastard needs to stop fighting.

Fight Aficionado

Has anyone in LA gone to Toney’s BBQ joint? Is it any good and does it draw a good trade? If so he should focus on that. There are similar places here in the SF Bay that bank crazy cash. At this stage of his life it’s a more appropriate livelihood. I say this as a long-time Toney fan.

He was great before he started using Steriods and started with those Roid Rage Episodes alla WWF… after he got busted using Steriods vs John Ruiz I lost any respect for that idiota..

Wow,why all the hate for Toney? Don’t you remember how good he was,or how many great fights he gave you?

Slater is carving out a very nice niche for himself reporting on heavyweights who are either never were’s or never will be’s

James Toney tank has been running on empty for a while now
Numerous years of Lack of maintenance has left this fighting machine clapped out and broken down

Tony Jameson

James Toney should go to liposuction and make his head taller from the remaining fat. Just a thought.

Fedor

May as well keep punching away considering I cannot understand him nowadays anyhow. I can only hope to understand the fighting spirit he possess though.

Do you think anyone would pay to watch Toney fight? The guy should have retired years ago and does not belong anywhere near the hall of fame.

Like the saying goes, “Don’t count the chickens until they are hatched”. Almost everyone, including Provo, were overlooking his opponent while talking about a fight against PAC. I’ve seemed this so many times and find difficult to believe that even veteran trainers like Roach can fall into that trap.

A fighter should always be concentrated on his actual opponent and not on a future fight until the fight is over.

Toney baloney

Pharlapz

@Nicolas … I recall Toney calling out Jones numerous times over the years but Jones avoided him. Also, Jones never defended the heavyweight title he won by defeating Ruiz.

Posted June 15, 2014 3:33 pm

Pharlapz

@Donny White … yes, the blows to the head are definitely taking their toll.

Posted June 15, 2014 3:20 pm

Pharlapz

@Tojoe … I think you are confusing James Toney with Tony Tubbs who held the WBA Heavyweight title for a brief time in the 1980’s.

Posted June 15, 2014 3:15 pm

Donny White

Pharlapz Toney may slip punches and be better at ” D ” but he does get hit and he is slurring more and more

Posted June 15, 2014 3:10 pm

Pharlapz

@Donny White … you mention Jerry Quarry in the present tense; FYI, he died in 1999. Also, I understand the point you are trying to make and I agree Toney does speak with a slur but there is really no comparison between the two fighting styles as Toney is excellent at slipping punches whereas Quarry’s defensive skills were pretty weak.

Donny White

James Toney will be like Jerry Quarry if he continues to fight on. Jerry’s scrambled brains and child like manner are evident of to many hits to the head

Posted June 15, 2014 2:13 pm

Tojoe

Think back thenIthink tony was called tony the tubs then, he was fighting over 200 lb, mans just loves his sweets. Donuts vs workout.

Mr Slater makes the point that he did perhaps not fulfill what he he could have been. I found it curious that when Roy Jones won the heavyweight championship from John Ruiz, that Toney than a heavyweight did not call him out. This would have been a natural for Toney to get revenge. In this fight he would not have had to have the concern about making weight. That humiliating loss to Jones as a Super Middleweight did Toney a lot of damage to his prestige. He gained some of it back with his wins over Jirov and stoppage of Hollyfield.

A bum and a steroid cheater just like all Yanks.

Toney suffers from Drain Brammage already. A fight with Klitschko will kill him. He will wind up in the gutter like a gutter ball bowling ball. He is too freaking short to fight Wlad. He will be put into a comatose state of confusion, worse than he is in right now. Wlad has more common sense than to entertain a notion of Toney getting a title shot. Toney is already shot.

CurlyQ.Howard

Seeing as James Toney has had a difficult time speaking coherent sentences for years now, how is it that he is able to pass a sanctioned physical to be certified to fight? If James Toney is not the poster boy for dementia pugilistic, who is: Jerry Quarry?

Tommy Toupee

Tony is slurring his words already another 10 bouts could do terrible damage to his health imo he should not be allowed fight any more
