Viciously victorious over Stiverne, Wilder again calls out Joshua

Well, Deontay Wilder sure made Bermane Stivere eat his words last night in their basically pointless return fight. Ahead of the rematch, former WBC champ Stiverne boldly stated how “No-one ever knocks me out. It isn’t gonna happen.”

It did happen, though, inside the very first-round last night in New York as a rampaging, viciously determined Wilder absolutely crushed his sixth title challenger, scoring three knockdowns in rapid fashion. Whether or not Wilder’s critics will have been impressed with the win, the 38th KO win picked up by Wilder in his 39 pro wins, is another matter. Stiverne, in poor physical condition, was a slow and easy target, some will say, adding how Wilder simply could not miss. Still, Wilder has sickening power and until anyone beats him he has every right to claim he is “The Man” at heavyweight.

The victory makes Porter the mandatory title challenger for unified welterweight champion Keith Thurman’s WBC belt.

WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (12-0, 10 KOs) looked great in smashing Trent Broadhurst (20-2, 12 KOs) by a 1st round knockout on Saturday night in the Russian fighter’s first defense of his title at the Salle Medecin in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Televised by HBO Boxing, Bivol landed a straight right hand to the chin of Broadhurst in the finals seconds of round 1 to score a 1st round knockout. A bleeding a badly hurt Broadhurst stayed down on his back a long time before he finally got back to his feet.

Sergey Lipinets beats Akihiro Kondo

Sergey Lipinets (13-0, 10 KOs) earned the vacant IBF Junior Welterweight World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Japanese veteran Akihiro Kondo (29-7-1, 16 KOs). The judges scored the fight 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111.

The back-and-forth 12-round world championship fight saw Lipinets control the early rounds with a diversified, creative attack targeting Kondo’s body. An accidental clash of heads in the sixth round, which opened up a deep cut on the forehead of Lipinets, altered the momentum of the fight as Kondo gained confidence and was able to land some powerful punches to the head and body of Lipinets. The 28-year old Lipinets, who earned the title in just his 13th professional fight, was able to regain control in the later rounds to earn the unanimous win.

The fight was televised by Showtime Championship Boxing.

Wilder (39-0, 38 KO’s) knocked Stiverne (25-3-1, 21 KOs) to the ground three times before referee Arthur Mercante halted the bout at 2:59 of the opening round. The long and largely entertaining career of Ricardo Mayorga surely comes to an end with stoppage loss to Andrey Sirotkin

He fought, he drank beer, he smoked cigarettes, and he gave us plenty of entertaining nights and fights along the way, but “El Matador” Ricardo Mayorga surely reached the end last night in Russia.

The 44 year old, having actually won his previous fight this past April (over a 12-17-1 Jaudiel Zepeda who he TKO’d) retired on his stool after nine rounds against unbeaten Russian Andrey Sirotkin, now 14-0(4). Mayorga, who gave it a go while he was able, in the early rounds, falls to 32-10-1(26) and it is to be hoped this will indeed be the final tally for the wild man from Nicaragua.

Juan Carlos “Merengue” Abreu (20-3-1, 19 KOs) took a decisive step forward in the welterweight rankings after stopping the experienced Mexican warrior Jesus “Renuente” Soto Karass (28-13-4, 18 KOs) in the eighth-round of the scheduled 10-round main event of the latest edition of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN at Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona. Abreu, of La Romana, Dominican Republic, outboxed Soto Karass in nearly every round as the native of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, pushed forward aggressively. After scoring a knockdown followed by a series of unanswered punches, the fight was stopped at 1:07 of the eighth round.

Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga (1-0), a former UFC heavyweight title challenger made a successful professional boxing debut as he defeated Alejandro Esquilin Santiago (0-1) over four competitive, back-and-forth rounds with two scorecards (58-56) and one scorecard (38-38), for a majority decision victory. Both fighters had their moments in this entertaining heavyweight bout, especially in the third-round; however, Gonzaga landed the more powerful punches and was the aggressor throughout the fight.
