Subriel Matias, the IBF light welterweight champion, says WBC champ Devin Haney is a “chicken.” Matias doesn’t say why he views Haney as a chicken, but it could be that he doesn’t like that he’s shown zero interest in fighting him in a unification.
Since winning the WBC title against Regis Prograis last year, Haney has fought once, losing to Ryan Garcia in a terrible performance last April.
Matias’ power would be a big problem for Haney, who was dropped three times by Garcia in their fight and was fortunate to escape the contest without getting knocked out.
Some believe that Haney is just looking for money now and is not interested in serious fights against dangerous opposition unless they involve a lot of cash.
Matias’ Upcoming Title Defense
Matias (20-1, 20 KOs) defends his IBF 140-lb title this Saturday, June 15th, against unbeaten Liam Paro (24-0, 15 KOs) in a twelve-round contest, live on DAZN. The fight will take place in Matias’ home country at the Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruz Abreu in Manati, Puerto Rico.
If the Matchroom Boxing-promoted Matias is victorious against Paro, he’d like to fight a unification against one of the other champions at light welterweight. That might not be possible, given how dangerous Matias has looked, but his chances may increase if he looks vulnerable against Paro.
“I have something that 99% of the people don’t have. That’s a cold personality. I feel I’m one of the few boxers with the full package,” said Subriel Matias to DAZN Boxing.
“The pressure forces me to do more, and that’s what fans are looking for. I think it would be Rolly after I’m done with Haney and Teofimo. He’s smart. He will quit. Haney is like a chicken.”
It’s unlikely that WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez or Haney will ever agree to fight Matias because it’s too risky, and the money wouldn’t be big. They will likely play it safe, fighting guys like Steve Claggett and Sandor Martin.
“Rolly, blah. Gervonta, this one I can say will be more difficult. Teofimo has mental problems,” said Matias. “I want to send a message to Regis Prograis. If you want to be a champion again, I’m here.
“I promise you I’m going to send you to the hospital. If you want to be champion again, I give you the opportunity, but one condition: You’re going to go to the hospital,” said Matias.
