Povetkin obliterates Perez; Chakhkiev defeats Wright

In a total annihilation, WBC Silver heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (29-1, 21 KOs) blasted out an over-matched and pudgy looking No.2 WBC Mike Perez (21-2-1, 13 KOs) tonight in stopping him in the 1st round after brutally knocking him down twice in their World Boxing Council heavyweight title eliminator at the Luzhniki, in Moscow, Russia.

The 35-year-old Povetkin caught Perez by surprised early in the round with a right hand to the head that staggered him and caused him to back up a step. The 29-year-old Perez was badly shaken from the shot, and there was no way he was going to be able to recover from that punch. He just too hurt. Sure enough, moments later, Povetkin landed a clean right hand to the chin of Perez, sending him down on the canvas on his back. The chubby-looking Perez was able to get up from the knockdown, but his legs were totally gone.

Golovkin destroys Monroe Jr; Gonzalez obliterates Sosa

Challenger Willie Monroe (19-2, 6 KOs) tried hard tonight, but he was no match for IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in getting stopped in the 6th round of a scheduled 12 round bout at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Monroe was down three times in the fight, and would have likely been down even more if he hadn’t quit on his feet in the 6th round following a hard knockdown. Referee Jack Reiss officially stopped the fight at 0:45 of the 6th.

Monroe hit the canvas twice in the 2nd round. The first knockdown came from a left hook to the head that put Monroe down. Less than a minute later, Monroe was knocked down by a volley of punches from Golovkin. At this point in the fight it looked like Monroe wouldn’t make it past the 3rd round.

Canelo Alvarez obliterates Kirkland!

Red-headed Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) got one of his better victories of his career tonight in defeating a guy that was totally made for him in 31-year-old James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) by a 3rd round stoppage on HBO World Championship Boxing at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

Kirkland, who was fighting for the first time in two years after dropping a lot of fat in training camp, was really no match for Canelo. Kirkland attempted to use his wide open fighting style by plodding straight at the 24-year-old Canelo in the brief three rounds of action and the results were predictable. Canelo dropped Kirkland three times in the fight.

Jack defeats Dirrell; Jacobs defeats Truax

In a surprise upset, WBC super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell (27-1-1, 22 KOs) was defeated by #8 WBC challenger Badou Jack (19-1-1, 12 KOs) by a 12 round majority decision on Friday night in a fight that wasn’t supposed to be competitive at the UIC Pavilion, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Dirrell, 30, looked under motivated from the start as he threw single shots and spent much of the time clinching to try and shutdown Jack’s pressure style offense.

Jack didn’t have fast feet, and Dirrell likely could have out-boxed him if he was a mobile fighter like his older brother Andre Dirrell, but he simply didn’t have the mobility to stay away from Jack. All throughout the fight, Jack would cut off the ring on Dirrell and force him to fight on the inside where he was less skilled. Dirrell would then clinch to stop Jack from nailing him with shots. But Jack used these opportunities to rough Dirrell up by hitting him to the body, side of the head and even to the back of the head.

Fonfara destroys Julio Cesar Chavez Jr

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s career took a major hit tonight with him getting stopped at the end of the 9th round by the big punching light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (27-3, 16 KOs) in their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Fighting at a catch-weight of 172 pounds, Chavez Jr. was shockingly dropped the 9th round by Fonfara. Chavez Jr. was really hurt to the extent that he wasn’t going to be able to recover after the round ended. In between rounds, Chavez Jr. quit on his stool instead of coming out for the 10th and taking more punishment.

Fonfara was deducted a point in the 7th for the use of his shoulder. It was kind of a petty foul to be called by the referee Jerry Cantu, but thankfully the point deduction didn’t have any effect on the result of the fight.

Andy Lee vs Peter Quillin ends in draw; Garcia beats Peterson

In an exciting fight, WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-2-1, 24 KOs) got up off the canvas twice to rally in the second half of the fight to salvage a 12 round majority draw against former WBO 160 pound champion Peter Quillin (31-0-1, 22 KOs). Lee knocked Quillin down in the 7th round with a right hook to the head. That knockdown negated one of Quillin’s earlier knockdowns.

Kovalev stops Pascal; Glazkov beats Cunningham

(Photo Credits: David Spagnolo/Main Events) Jean Pascal (29-3-1, 17 KOs) gave it a game effort tonight, but he just wasn’t able to handle WBA/WBO/IBF light heavyweight Sergey Kovalev’s power, as Kovalev dropped Pascal twice in the process of halting him in the 8th round in their fight on Saturday night on HBO Championship Boxing from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Pascal visited the canvas in the 4th and the 8th rounds. Referee Luis Pabon pulled the plug in the 8th shortly after Pascal was dropped with a left hook by Kovalev. Pascal sprang to his feet, staggered to the ropes for a last stand. Kovalev then nailed the near defenseless Pascal with two hard right hands to the head that had Pascal’s eyes rolling around in his head. The fight was stopped at 1:03 of the round. Not surprisingly, Pascal protested the stoppage, even while staggering around.

Thurman defeats Guerrero; Broner decisions Molina

WBA 147lb champion Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) gave Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (32-3-1, 18 KOs) a methodical beating in winning a 12 round unanimous decision tonight in their fight on NBC in the Premier Boxing Champion series at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The judges scored the fight 120-107, 118-109 and 118-108. Guerrero was cut over his left eye and knocked down in the 9th round after getting tagged hard by a left hand from Thurman.

In the 3rd, Thurman and Guerrero rammed heads with each other, leaving Thurman was a big goose egg on the left side of his forehead.

Golovkin destroys Murray; Fury defeats Rudenko

Britain’s Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) gave it a good try tonight in battling WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) hard for 10 rounds, but in the 11th round, Golovkin battered a bruised and bleeding Murray until the fight was stopped by referee Luis Pabon at the Salle des Étoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Murray looked a lot bigger than Golovkin tonight, and that might be one of the reasons why he was able to survive for so long. Murray looked at least 180 pounds, and he appeared to have a significant weight advantage over Golovkin. The fight was like watching a talented middleweight take on a light heavyweight or a small cruiserweight without power.

Deontay Wilder likes his chances against Wladimir Klitschko

(Photo credit: Hoganphotos/Golden Boy Promotions) Newly crowned WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) is only one day removed from his victory over WBC champ Bermane Stiverne (24-2-1, 21 KOs) and already Wilder is targeting IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko for a unification match that Wilder is hoping will take place later this year after Wladimir gets through with his title defense against his IBF mandatory challenger Bryant Jennings on April 25th.

Deontay, 29, points to his youth, speed, and inside fighting skills as assets that could lead him to victory over the 38-year-old 6’6” Wladimir if the fight goes down this year.
