Chavez Jr: This fight doesn’t deserve a rematch

chavez100 If you were hoping that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (47-1-1, 32 KO’s) would give Brian Vera (23-7, 14 KO’s) a rematch to shut down the criticism he’s receiving from fans over his debatable 10 round unanimous decision last Saturday night, you can forget it. Chavez Jr. has ruled out giving Vera a rematch. Instead, Chavez Jr. plans on moving forward with his career and will be looking for a title shot in his next fight, which he hopes will take place at 168.

Chavez Jr. won the fight by the scores 98-92, 96-94 and 97-93. One judge had Chavez Jr. winning the first 7 rounds of the fight, and that would seem like an impossibility considering that Vera clearly got the better of Chavez Jr. in at least 5 of the first 7 rounds.

Well tonight we didn’t see just one oddball score from a judge; we saw three of them with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (47-1-1, 32 KO’s) winning a controversial 10 round unanimous decision against a much smaller Brian Vera (23-7, 14 KO’s) on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

I’m not sure which fight the three judges were watching because I had Vera winning the fight by 4 rounds. The three judges had the fight scored 96-94, 97-93 and 98-92.

I’m still trying to figure out how two of the judges had Chavez Jr. winning 97-93 and 98-92. With the way that Chavez Jr. was getting outworked all fight long, I don’t see how he could have won all those rounds.

Stevenson destroys Cloud

WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (22-1, 9 KO’s) totally dominated former IBF light heavyweight Tavoris Cloud (24-2, 19 KO’s) in stopping him after the 7th round on Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The fight was halted after the 7th round because of a nasty cut over the right eye of Cloud. He was cut over both eyes, but the cut over his right eye was deep one.

It was a horribly one-sided fight from start to the bitter finish with the southpaw Stevenson hitting Cloud at will with lightning fast left hands and right hooks. Cloud was too slow of hand and foot to land anything more than an occasional shot. He did land some punches in the 5th through 7th rounds, but not enough of them to make the fight competitive.

On Saturday, September 28th, from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the lineal Light Heavyweight Champion, Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (21-1, 18 KOs) will defend his Ring Magazine and WBC belts against former IBF titlist Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud (24-1, 19 KOs) as part of a sure to be action filled “Double Header” on HBO Championship Boxing.

While many ringside observers are predicting the highly anticipated match-up to go the distance, due to the mental and physical durability of the title challenger, Stevenson’s trainer, Javan “Sugar” Hill, warns everyone not to blink when the opening bell sounds.

“With Adonis, you just never know how long the fight will be,” claims the Kronk Gym trainer. “Because of his massive power, you really don’t know if the fight will go twelve rounds, six rounds, or just 76 seconds.”

Virgil Hunter: Khan is in for a rude awakening if he fights Mayweather

The latest talk is that former two division world champion Amir Khan may choose to bypass the risky fight against IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander on December 7th in order to sit around until May to get a much bigger money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Khan’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions wanted him to fight Alexander in order to give Khan a chance to pick up his IBF 147 lb. title and show boxing fans that he would be a worthy opponent for Mayweather.

Khan’s trainer Virgil Hunter doesn’t know what Khan is going to do, but he feels that he’s going to need to dedicate himself fully to the sport if he wants to beat a talented fighter like Mayweather.

Chavez Jr-Vera tonight: Will Julio’s HUGE weight advantage help him

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) will likely look like a cruiserweight or a mini-heavyweight tonight when he steps inside the ring to face the much smaller and much lighter Brian Vera (23-6, 14 KO’s) in a fight that will be televised by HBO from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Wilder vs. Firtha on Hopkins-Murat card next month

Unbeaten KO artist Deontay Wilder will face experienced big guy Nicolai Firtha in his next pro outing, on the Bernard Hopkins-Karo Murat under-card at The Barclays Centre New York on October 26th.

Wilder, 29-0(29) is coming off that scary 1st-round destruction of former WBO heavyweight titlist Serhai Liakhovich and it will be interesting to see if he can keep his KO streak going against the 34-year-old who is both big and game.

Firtha, 21-10-1(8) is not a top-rated contender and his record is somewhat patchy, yet he has been in with some big names and acquitted himself well. Since being stopped (arguably prematurely) in the 5th-round by Tyson Fury in what was a sizzling slugfest while it lasted, Firtha has dropped a 12-round decision to Johnathon Banks (who went on to ruin Seth Mitchell via 2nd-round stoppage, before Banks lost the return via forgettable 12-round snoozer) and won a stay-busy six-rounder against Robert Hawkins.
