Crolla beats Rees by a controversial decision

YouTube video
In a highly controversial decision, Anthony Crolla (26-4-1,9 KO’s) labored to a 12 round majority over Gavin (37-3-1, 18 KO’s) to grab the vacant WBO Inter-Continental lightweight title at the Bolton Arena, Bolton, Lancashire, United Kingdom. The judges scores were 115-113 and 116-113 for Crolla, and 115-115 even. This was a really strange fight, because I’ve never seen a fighter get out-landed and outworked as much as I saw Crolla, and yet still win the fight. Talk about your controversial decisions.

It was a very questionable decision in that Rees landed more shots in every round of the fight, was the much busier guy in every round, and landed the cleaner shots. I saw Rees winning almost the rounds. The only rounds I could give Crolla were the 3rd and 11th, and even in those rounds, Rees outlanded him.

Crolla had the crowd in his favor big time in this fight, and the outcome was not surprising. Crolla was getting cheered even when he missing shots; whereas the crowd was deathly silent each time Rees landed, which quite often.

De La Hoya: Canelo vs. Mayweather = the perfect storm to break records

009MayweatherandCaneloIMG_0090(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) Oscar De La Hoya thinks the September 14th match-up between Golden Boy promoted Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. has a good possibility of breaking the pay per view record set between himself and Mayweather many years ago in 2007.

De La Hoya sees the Mayweather-Canelo fight being on that magnitude due to Canelo’s huge popularity in addition to Mayweather’s huge fan base. De La Hoya feels the mix of the two will create a huge demand for this fight on PPV come September 14th.

Sanchez: Golovkin will blast out Macklin within 5 rounds

golovkin33Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) is really up against it tonight with his fight against IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) on HBO. Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez sees this fight not lasting more than 5 rounds tops, and the rest of the boxing world pretty much sees the same thing happening.

Macklin is simply made to order for Golovkin to knockout in their fight at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Sanchez said to RingTV “Macklin’s a warrior but he’s going to stand in front of get blown out…I don’t think the fight goes past 5.

Mora decisions Proksa in ugly fight

mora1Sergio Mora (24-3-2, 7 KO’s) defeated Grzegorz Proksa (29-3, 21 KO’s) tonight by a 10 round unanimous decision in a pot shot fight at the Veteran’s Coliseum, in Jacksonville, Florida. The judges scored it 96-94, 96-94, and 98-92. The 96-94 scores seemed fair. The 98-92 score was out of touch with the reality of the fight.

Mora won, but it was close and it was very ugly because both of these guys were throwing mostly single shots all night. It was a lot of defense, and lot of head movement without a lot of power. Proksa came into the fight with a reputation for being a hard puncher, but he didn’t look very power tonight, and of course neither did Mora.

Mayweather: Canelo wants to steal all my fans

canelo454Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) thinks WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) will be looking to strip away a significant portion of his fan base by beating him on September 14th in what will be the first time the 22-year-old Canelo has headlined a pay per view event on his own.

Mayweather doesn’t intend on letting the red-haired Mexican fighter do that to him, and he’s focused on using his vast experience to come up with a plan to beat him when they face each other at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A Coming Golden Age?

In many areas of life there are periods of excellence. Moments when a group of people explode with genius and set a higher standard for the future. The Ancient Greeks had it with philosophy, the Italian Lombards had it with art, and… I postulate that the British may have it with heavyweight boxing.

Golovkin / Macklin: Will Matthew behave like a good boy?

735When Gennady Golovkin and Matthew Macklin made their HBO debut both exceeded expectations. Golovkin needed only 5 rounds to dispose of Grzegorz Proksa while Macklin showed his worth pushing Lineal Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez proving his draw versus the aging Felix Sturm, which many believe he won, was no fluke. Has Golovkin been prematurely crowned a king of a division? Does Macklin have what it takes as a +650 underdog to pull off the upset? Answers to those questions will come Saturday night with the fans ultimately winning in what should be an entertaining fight.

The day he stepped foot in America and on the premium channel giant HBO, the fighter who goes by the alias “Triple G” made his presents felt in a major way. Golovkin catapulted himself near the top in the minds of hardcore boxing fans across the world, in less time than it takes the average person to say Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin’s full name.
