WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (38-0, 37 KOs) has to come from behind to beat a surprisingly good #8 WBC Gerald Washington (18-1-1, 12 KOs) by a 5th round TKO on Saturday night at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham. Alabama. Wilder kept his offensive weapons under wraps until the 5th round when he hurt Washington with a devastating right hand to the head.
Undefeated rising prospect Caleb Plant (15-0, 10 KOs) scored a unanimous decision (100-89, 100-89, 99-90) victory over an experienced Thomas Awimbono (25-7-1, 21 KOs) in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions on FS1 and FOX Deportes from the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, AL.
In the televised opener, Tugstsogt Nyambayar (8-0, 7 KOs) emerged victorious with a hard-fought 10th round technical knockout over Jhon Gemino (15-8-1, 7 KOs).
Using his hand speed and punching power advantage, #1 WBC 122lb contender Ray Vargas (29-0, 22 KOs) boxed his way to a 12 round majority decision tonight over #2 WBC Gavin McDonnell (16-1-2, 4 Kos) to win the vacant WBC super bantamweight title at the Hull Ice Arena in Hull, England. It was a nice effort from both fighters. McDonnell came up short based on the speed and pinpoint accuracy of the 26-year-old Mexican Vargas.
Fan interest in the upcoming May 6 clash between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. continues to grow, and Oscar De La Hoya is doing a great job of promoting the all-Mexican bout. With pride at stake, the unofficial “Battle of Mexico” promises to bring out the best in both men. No further hype is required to sell the fight but De La Hoya is providing some anyway.
It won’t be too much of a shock if WBC heavyweight ruler Deontay Wilder scores a KO victory tonight; in fact most fans are fully expecting Wilder to despatch his fifth title challenger Gerald Washington inside the distance. However, it will be something of a sensation if reigning IBF heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua scores a KO in his next fight.
Joshua of course faces former king Wladimir Klitschko, on April 29, with the WBA title also on the line, and AJ has predicted a KO win. As fans know, Klitschko has not been stopped since way, way back in 2004, when he suddenly collapsed from sheer exhaustion in his brutal fight with an unbelievably tough Lamon Brewster. But Joshua, who has KO’d or stopped each of his 18 pro opponents, tells British GQ Magazine that he will be the first man in 13 years to take out “Dr. Steel Hammer.”
It seems fans who were hoping to see an immediate return meeting between intense British heavyweight rivals Dillian Whyte and Dereck Chisora will be disappointed. For although a rematch of the terrific 12 round battle the two engaged in back in December will always be a possibility, the two contenders have separate bouts in the pipeline.
According to promoter Eddie Hearn, Whyte, who aims to get himself in line for a world title shot this year, could face Cuban southpaw Luis Ortiz soon. Speaking with Sky Sports, the Matchroom boss laid out the plans for the once-beaten Whyte.

DeLoach, (17-1, 9 KOs), of Augusta, Ga. continued his impressive winning streak with his seventh straight victory as he claimed the vacant USBA super welterweight title with the win, knocking out Pearson (14-2, 10 KOs, WSB 3-0, 1 KO) at 2:30 of the second round.
Eleider Alvarez (22-0, 11 KOs) had too much for 36-year-old Lucian Bute (32-4-1, 25 KOs) tonight in halting him in round 5 of a fairly one-sided fight on Friday evening at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City. The win for Eleider locks him in as the WBC mandatory challenger for WBC 175lb champion Adonis Stevenson.
Deontay Wilder returns to his home state of Alabama for what’s sure to be some down-home, southern-cooking against yet another non-de script opponent in former USC football player Gerald Washington. In case the main event is a one-side debacle, Al Haymon added two intriguing bouts for Saturday’s PBC on Fox broadcast.
