Puerto Rico earned yet another world champion this year as Alberto “Explosivo” Machado (19-0, 16 KOs) knocked out Jezreel “El Invisible” Corrales (22-2, 8 KOs) in the eighth round of a scheduled 12-round fight to become the WBA World Super Featherweight Champion at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. In what was a hard-fought battle between two southpaws, Corrales earned an early advantage by being much quicker and skillful. The native of San Miguelito, Panama also landed hard overhand lefts repeatedly, eventually dropping Machado with that same punch in the fifth round. Little by little, though, Machado’s size and strength advantages began taking a toll on Corrales, who was hurt by a right hook in round six.

Last night at Turning Stone Resort and Casino, in Verona New York, undefeated two time Jr. Middleweight World Champion, Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (Providence, RI, 25-0 16KO’s), made a successful debut in the Middleweight division by dominating previously unbeaten Alantez “Slyaza” Fox (Forestville, MD, 23-1-1 11KO’s) over 12 rounds of action. All three judges had Andrade ahead by scores of 118-110, 118-109, and 116-111.

Sugar Ray had more than earned the accolade as the finest boxer in history pound-for pound, as a welterweight and a middleweight. But Ray wanted more. He moved up to light heavyweight and in June of 1952 challenged Joey Maxim for his world title. Robinson was way ahead on the scorecards, but going into the latter rounds of the fight – fought under a temperature of 104 degrees – Robinson hit the wall. He was suffering from heat prostration and had to quit on his stool at the end of thirteen rounds. Sugar Ray announced his retirement afterwards. It stuck for two and a half years.
