David Price vs. Matt Skelton tonight in LiverpoolBy Michael Collins: British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (14-0, 12 KO’s) faces a badly overmatched opponent tonight in 45-year-old Matt Skelton (28-6, 23 KO’s) at the Aintree Equestrian Centre, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom. This isn’t a fight that’s going to give Price anything other than a brief sparring session before he knocks Skelton out.

The 29-year-old Price has been brought along really slowly despite his Olympic background and he needs to be pushed a little faster.

Price says “I’m moving fast towards a world title shot. Next year will be massive for me”

The talk is that Price will be looking to fight at 40ish American heavyweight in 2013. In other words, another journeyman level opponent that won’t do much for him. However, if the fight is televised in the United States, it will give American boxing fans a chance to see Price fight.

By Michael Collins: American heavyweight Kevin Johnson (29-2-1, 13 KO’s) figures he won’t even need to switch on his ‘A’ game this Saturday night in order to defeat unbeaten #3 WBC heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (19-0, 14 KO’s) in their fight at the Odyssey Arena, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. Johnson sees the 24-year-old Fury as a doofy, we-punching heavyweight without experience against quality heavyweights.

Johnson said in his conference call with Fury “Height is not a problem. I know a lot of guys that don’t know how to use their key element. It don’t matter if you’re tall or short, I can break you down in 0.5 seconds, especially if your level of opposition..This guy [Fury] isn’t championship level. It’s not as if I’m going against an ‘A’ fighter. That’s not the case for me to bring out my ‘A’ game. So my ‘A’ game will really kill this dude. So what have I learned from fighting tall guys? You really don’t learn much. The tall or the short games are the same thing. It just depends on how skillful. This [Fury] is the most doofiest I’ve met in boxing. This is the most feeble-handed guy I’ve ever seen in boxing history, and you’re going to come in and make a mistake against me? When the bell rings I’m going to go and get him. I haven’t done that in a long time.”

The fight isn’t expected to be much of a fight because Skelton is in his mid 40s and he doesn’t have much power.

Ricky Hatton gets KO’d by Vyacheslav Senchenko in 9By Joseph Herron: After staging a valiant comeback from over three years of inactivity, Ricky Hatton (45-3, 32 KOs) was knocked out by a lethal shot to the liver via left hook from former WBA Welterweight Champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (33-1, 22 KOs) in the closing seconds of the ninth round in a scheduled ten round contest.

To begin the contest, an exuberant “Hitman” excited the crowd by closing the distance effectively and launching his trademark left hooks to the body and head of the rangy Ukrainian boxer. Although Ricky’s timing and rhythm was not reminiscent of the classic Junior Welterweight Hatton, Manchester’s favorite son was pressing the action successfully and forcing the fight to the larger visiting pugilist in the first half of the bout.

To begin the sixth round, Senchenko began to create distance by using the jab and landing the left hook, straight right hand combination to the body and head of the two division world champion. Despite trudging forward and landing the occasional effective left hand, the 34 year old fight veteran was getting caught cleanly and regularly while marching into the much taller and rangier fighter throughout the last half of the contest.

Vyacheslav Senchenko had the gall to step into the ring while wearing a Manchester United shirt, which made this writer hope for a Hatton knockout even more. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian fighter may already know what will be his first choice of what to take with him into the next life: his left hook to the body. When you absolutely must send your rival to the floor, accept no substitutes.

One’s liver is quite susceptible to blunt force, yet Ricky didn’t appear to get to experience the one to two second delay that separates the shot from the slump. The bet to place in regard to a valid explanation may be the easiest addition to your next parlay. A tired looking Hatton was trying to press the action in the 9th when he was hit by a stabbing left to side by Senchenko. Hatton immediately went down with a look of terrible pain on his face. His loyal British boxing fans waited anxiously for him to get back to his feet, but Hatton couldn’t. He was in too much pain from the shot and was counted out by the referee.

After the fight Hatton said ” thought I was maybe four rounds up but there were clear signs of ring rust. I hurt him a few times, and I was winning. I don’t want to make any hasty decisions but I am really heartbroken, That’s not how my career should end with two straight losses.”

If Hatton loses to Senchenko tonight you have to look at his weight loss as a huge factorBy Michael Collins: Ricky Hatton is staging his comeback tonight against Vyacheslav Senchenko in Manchester, England, and Hatton has set it up to where he might be vulnerable to getting knocked out cold once again due to a variety of factors. The first thing that Hatton has going for him in this fight is that he’s coming off of a 3 1/2 year retirement without a tune-up.

Senchenko is definitely a world class fighter despite being manhandled by the light hitting Paulie Malignaggi in his last fight. Senchenko is at least fringe level world class, and that’s more than good enough to beat a short, rusty fighter like Hatton, whose best weight at 140, not 147.

Hatton didn’t want to bother with taking a tune-up fight and is jumping straight into the fire so to speak with the Senchenko bout. That’s obviously not the smartest thing that a person can do. I know Hatton likes to do things his own way, but this is one thing that you don’t want to mess around with. Another problem that Hatton has for this fight is all the weight that he had to take off just to make 147.
