Floyd Mayweather Jnr. Critics Keep Moving the Goal Posts to Greatness

MayweatherAlvarez_HoganphotosFor any boxer starting out his career, to become a champion is the ultimate goal. For those that succeed in becoming a champion, the next step is to become a great champion. Boxing enthusiasts are a hard bunch to please though, and the “great” label is a tough nut to crack. It is a label made even harder for fighters to attain by critics who choose to move the goal posts, even when a champion has excelled above and beyond his peers in those aspects typically used to define “greatness”. Floyd Mayweather is one such victim.

To see why, delve with me for a moment on a journey back in time. I want to take you first to the evening of October 3rd in the year 1998. Bill Clinton was the president of the United States, with the Monica Lewinsky scandal breaking just months earlier. ‘Gazza’ had recently been dropped from the England football team (my American friends will just have to trust me – it was a really big deal). A new teenage sensation called ‘Britney Spears’ was storming the charts with her first hit. And the ‘War on Terror’ was something you might find in a sci-fi movie. It was also the night a young ‘Pretty Boy’ named Floyd climbed into the ring to contest his first world title belt, stepping through the ropes to challenge the seasoned, world-class Mexican Genaro Hernandez for the WBC super featherweight title.

Mike Alvarado vs. Ruslan Provodnikov: Weigh in results

pro yelling finalRuslan Provodnikov – 139.8 pounds

Mike Alvarado – 139.8 pounds

This Saturday evening, the city of Denver, Colorado, will be throwing a party, and the current WBO Junior Welterweight Champion, Mike Alvarado (34-1, 23 KOs), will be the guest of honor.

It’s been a long time coming for the nine year fight veteran.

After paying his dues and climbing up the pugilistic ladder, “Mile High Mike” is finally reaping the benefits of his hard labor. His unique brand of intelligent brutality has endeared him to fight audiences around the world, and HBO, as well as promoter Top Rank Inc, feels that Alvarado is quickly developing into one of the biggest stars of the sport.

002AndradeandHunterIMG_7448Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (19-0, 13KOs), the 2008 U.S. Olympian and one of the most decorated American amateur pugilists, will get his long awaited opportunity at a world title after several delays and opponent changes, when he takes on the former 2004 Olympian, Vanes “Nightmare” Martirosyan (33-0-1, 21KOs) on November 9th in Corpus Christi, Texas, for the vacant World Boxing Organization`s (“WBO”) Junior Middleweight Championship.

Promoter of Klitschko vs. Povetkin Not Happy About How Fans Reacted

wladimir1000Before facing Alexander Povetkin, it was quite a while since Wladimir Klitschko was placed against a formidable opponent with the promise of an exciting match. Most of Wladimir’s opponents were written off by the boxing community before the first bell ever rang, similar to how Mike Tyson used to tune the boxing public to believe that the fight was never going to be competitive.

That was until one of the biggest and most important challenges to Wladimir Klitschko was signed as his competitor. Alexander Povetkin was supposed to be the fighter to give Klitschko trouble, and possibly expose his so called glass chin once again. Not only did people show interest in that fight, but the event itself yielded record profits. Moscow was buzzing with excitement during the build-up, and even more so during fight night.

Joel Diaz: “There are no other opponents for Tim Bradley until we settle our business with Manny Pacquiao”

DSC_6130On this week’s edition of “The Pugilist KOrner”, expert trainer and former Lightweight contender Joel Diaz gave the listeners his thoughts on Tim Bradley’s boxing future in 2014.

Although most boxing pundits have stated that a fight with the winner of this weekend’s Junior Welterweight Championship contest in Denver, Colorado, between Mike Alvarado and Ruslan Provodnikov would be the most appropriate return bout for “Desert Storm”, the talented young fight trainer insists that the WBO Welterweight Champion has unfinished business with Manny Pacquiao.

“There is a wound that absolutely will not heal in my life until we make things clear and set things straight with Manny Pacquiao,” states expert trainer Joel Diaz. “I would love to get a rematch with Manny Pacquiao for the simple reason that we need to clear things up in the minds of the fight fans as well.”

Kell Brook says he will avenge Ricky Hatton’s loss, is ready for Senchenko

brook2Unbeaten welterweight contender Kell Brook had an open workout in his native Sheffield earlier today, training in front of enthusiastic fans at a big shopping mall. Brook said afterwards that he is “counting down the days” to his October 26th bout with Ukraine’s Vyacheslav Senchenko and that he is relishing the idea of the Ricky Hatton conqueror giving him a stern test.

Brook, 30-0(20) said he aims to avenge the 9th-round KO Senchenko scored over Hatton last November.

“I’m feeling great. It really gets me up when I come to Meadowhall, seeing all the fans come out,” Brook said to Sky Sports. “Training’s gone really well and I’m ready. I’ve a lot of respect for Senchenko, he’s a proven champion and ex-world champion. He’s come over here and he’s got a point to prove like he had last time with Ricky Hatton. I now want to get revenge for the fans and also for myself. I want to go out there and show why I’m talked about at the elite level.”

Wladimir Klitschko Mentions Wilder As a Possible Future Opponent

deontay32 - CopyThe heavyweight boxing division is drowning. There is a clear lack of formidable competition for either of the Klitschko brothers, and as time goes on, the remaining tiny pool of fighters is becoming dangerously dry.

After claiming a victory over Alexander Povetkin, Wladimir Klitschko is back on the hunt for the next opponent. But who is there left to fight?

David Haye will always linger as one of the options for Wladimir, but it seems as though there is no more interest in seeing the two fighters face each other again. The boxing community is not in favor of their rematch, proposing that it would be a waste of time for everyone.

Left-Hook Lounge: Bradley vs Marquez, Lomachenko, & Bradley’s Next Move!!!

DSC_6760Mario H. (Tampa, FL): There was a lot of discussion in the aftermath of Bradley/Marquez about Marquez being “robbed again”. How did you score the fight? And how did you rate the performance of both men?

Vivek W. (ESB): Personally, I had the fight scored 7 rounds to 5 in favor of Bradley. In all fairness, there were several rounds that were very tight that could have gone either way. Typically, we see the Champion get the nod in those rounds. My opinion on whether or not that should be a standard practice is irrelevant, as it has been that way for years, and my position won’t change it. Bearing that in mind, I think what we saw in the final analysis was in fact a product of that mentality.

Timothy Bradley Shakes off the Demons and Wins Impressively

marquez#5The narrative for Timothy Bradley’s career before last night was that of negativity and spoiled success. Bradley has been a fighter more criticized than praised on his rise to prominence and his time in the limelight has been one of turmoil. Boxing fans and pundits alike have had a slow transition to giving credit to Bradley after his ugly technical decision win over Devon Alexander in 2011 and his controversial decision over pound for pound boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.

In a fight that was supposed to propel Bradley into stardom and millions of dollars he got his hand raised but it did little to advance him to the public and media. In a comeback defense of his World Boxing Organization Welterweight Title he was matched against an “easy” opponent that he was supposed to win and look good against in order to make people forget about the Pacquiao controversy.

It’s been a bad spell for Mexican fight fans, Juan Manuel Marquez the latest Mexican warrior to fall

YouTube video
Let’s not even start about the latest slice of poor officiating witnessed last night in Las Vegas. Tim Bradley, a worthy and clear winner over an always-game but suddenly old-looking Juan Manuel Marquez, had to listen to how one judge had somehow scored the fight against him. Still, the right man won via split decision and Bradley – a fighter I learnt never to bet against some time ago – can now go on to even bigger fights (maybe even one with Floyd Mayweather Junior?)

As for Marquez, it’s tough to see where he goes from here, although he may well demand a return with Bradley, feeling as he does that he deserved the win. But whatever happens next for both great fighters, it must be agreed how it’s been a tough time for Mexican fighters and their fans just lately.

We’ve seen Rafael Marquez, Juan Manuel’s brother, lose by stoppage and decide the hang ’em up, we’ve seen new superstar in the making Saul Canelo Alvarez comprehensively schooled by Mayweather, we’ve seen Julio Cesar Chavez Junior receive an undeserving win over Bryan Vera and now we may have seen the last of “Dinamita.”
