Vasyl Lomachenko vs. The Super Featherweight’s Golden Era – Because Why Not?

Vasyl Lomachenko vs. The Super Featherweight’s Golden Era – Because Why Not?

I might be a little slow on this one, but it’s taken me two weeks of Youtube and instant replays to fully grasp the totality of Vasyl Lomachenko victory over a man formerly considered a pound-for-pound entrant.

Sure, Guillermo Rigondeaux came in with a size disadvantage. That became painfully obvious at the weigh-in. And sure, Rigondeaux was old for his profession and suffered long period of inactivity to boot – the late 30s are perilous for fighters other than Bernard Hopkins or a Klitschko brother.

Saunders, Lemieux make weight

Saunders, Lemieux make weight

WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (25-0, 12 KOs) and former middleweight champ David Lemieux (38-3, 33 KOs) made weight on Friday in weighing in each coming in at 160 pounds for Saturday’s contest at the Place Bell in Laval, Quebec, Canada. Saunders-Lemieux will be televised on HBO Championship Boxing and BoxNation on Saturday night.

With Saunders heckling him the whole time, Lemieux had to strip down completely to make the 160 lb. weigh-in limit. Lemieux made the weight, but he looked pretty drained for having made the weight. Saunders is hoping he can take advantage of Lemieux on Saturday night if he’s not 100 percent due to his problems getting down to the weight.

A coaches view of the Lomachenko vs Rigondeaux fight Saturday night

Like many of you, I watched the fight last Saturday night with great anticipation. All week long my gym was abuzz with predictions as to who would come out on top. Basically, the gym was pretty evenly divided with a slight majority leaning towards Lomachenko because of his age and size. Everyone had an opinion and almost every possible outcome must have been discussed …expect one…that one was unthinkable.

The quit job angered many, and the X-Ray results that have been revealed today – courtesy of a news feature via RingTV.com – are sure to add fuel to the fire of hate being currently aimed at “Rigo.”

George Foreman gives his take on the Lomachenko-Rigondeaux fight and its aftermath

Heavyweight legend, in fact living legend, George Foreman never, ever quit in a fight in his life: the former world champion digging deep in so many epic bouts. Today, the finest elder statesman of the sport we all love so much has a roving eye on all the big fights and what they mean to boxing.

Like the rest of us, “Big George” was disappointed, shocked even, over how pound-for-pound entrant Guillermo Rigondeaux quit on his stool at the conclusion of just six-rounds against Vasyl Lomachenko on Saturday. Foreman, who pushed himself numerous times in numerous fights – his epics with Ron Lyle, Evander Holyfield and Michael Moorer being the stuff of legend – comes from a different era; one where quitting was simply unforgiven.

Bob Arum talks about Lomachenko going to 135, maybe 140 – can anybody test “Hi-Tech?”

Top Rank boss Bob Arum says we have never seen any fighter quite like Vasyl Lomachenko, the reigning WBO 130 pound king who is the fighter seemingly everyone is talking about right now. After easily dealing with Guillermo Rigondeaux – Lomachenko barely appearing to break a sweat as he forced his fellow southpaw to quit after just six completed rounds – the Ukrainian sensation is in need of a real fight, a real test.
