Callum Smith: Chasing World Title in 2016

Liverpool’s super-middleweight contender, Callum Smith (18-0, 13ko) claimed the vacant British title in ferocious style last night with his blitzing of previously unbeaten Rocky Fielding, promising 2016 will be his year to claim a world title.

WBC #1, Smith, took less than a round to become the fourth of his family of fighting brothers to capture the coveted Lonsdale belt, and will be looking to follow hot on the world title winning heels of brother Liam, who recently captured WBO 154 lb honours.

Kevin Bizier (25-2, 17 KOs) stopped Fredrick Lawson (24-1, 20 KOs) after 10-rounds of toe-to-toe action on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBCSN on Saturday night from Miccosukee Resort and Gaming in Miami. Lawson’s corner stopped the fight after the tenth round as Lawson indicated that his jaw may have been broken. Bizier pressured Lawson throughout the fight and hurt him with powerful right hands. In the fifth round, Bizier landed one of those powerful rights perfectly on Lawson’s head and sent the previously unbeaten fighter to the canvas. Making his U.S. debut, Bizier wore Lawson down and never allowed his opponent to get into a rhythm.

India’s boxing sensation Vijender destroyed Dean Gillen inside one round with a phenomenal power-packed performance at the National Stadium in Dublin in his first ever professional fight in Ireland. Singh followed up his pro debut last month, when he smashed Sonny Whiting at the Manchester Arena, with another destructive display, but in less than half the time, as he pummelled Nottingham’s Gillen with big right hands. Gillian went down in the middle of the round, which was ruled a slip by the referee, but Singh went straight on the attack. He didn’t let Gillen rest as he landed punch after punch with Gillen in the corner until Singh detonated a devastating right that dropped him and left him unable to beat the referee’s ten-count at the end of the round.

Ruslan Provodnikov promised to put on a show and he didn’t disappoint as he overwhelmed unbeaten Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez in four rounds at the glitzy Salle Des Etoiles in Monte Carlo on Saturday night. With HRH Prince Albert looking on, the former WBO junior-welterweight champion wasn’t unduly stretched as he hit his stride early and pounded away until the finish of their scheduled 10-round welterweight clash. The Russian was the aggressor and although his Mexican opponent had some success counter-punching, he didn’t have the strength to hold off Provodnikov.
