Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr to face Dominik Britsch in December; can “The Son of a Legend” make up for lost time?

Backed by his new promoters Zanfer, Mexican star Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr is set to return in December against Germany’s Dominik Britsch. Zanfer Tweeted the fight is confirmed for December, but there is no official word yet on either the venue for the fight (expected to be in Mexico) or the weight the fight will be fought at.

Chavez Jnr, now aged 30 and last seen in a ring well over a year ago when he decisioned Marcos Reyes last July, had boxed up at light-heavyweight when he was beaten and stopped by Andrjez Fonfara earlier in 2015, and it’s unclear where the remainder of his career will play out, weight-wise. Chavez Jnr recently said that he is capable of beating, and knocking out, middleweight king Gennady Golovkin. But as unrealistic as that notion might be, the fight seems unlikely to happen anyway – can Chavez Jnr, 49-2-1(32) even make 160 these days?

Britsch, 32-2-1(11) has not faced any fighters of obvious note and he has been beaten by a 6-3 fighter. Still, Britsch – who was to have fought reigning WBO super-middleweight champ Gilberto Ramirez this year before Ramirez pulled out with an injury – has been stopped just once and he is young (ish, at age 29) and he is coming off four straight wins.

Chavez Jnr should be able to rid himself of some ring rust and, maybe, get his once very promising career back on track. Chavez Jnr probably won’t land that mega-fight with GGG (although stranger things have happened and in boxing today, you never really know for sure) but with his big name, an active, fully fit and focused Chavez Jnr could well land a title fight of some kind. But that’s the thing: will we ever see an active, fully fit and focused Chavez Jnr in the ring again?

Chavez Jnr was once a word champion at middleweight – holding a version of the WBC belt from 2011 to 2012 – can he possibly reign again?
