Mikey Garcia Talks Continuing Legal Tussle With Top Rank

It’s now been almost 18 months since we last saw Oxnard’s Mikey Garcia in a boxing ring, shutting out Juan Carlos Burgos back in January of last year.

The long term contractual dispute with his promoter, Bob Arum’s Top Rank, shows no sign of abating, despite recent assertions from the fighter and his brother/trainer Robert that he had hoped to be back in the ring before the end of the year.

As the Top Rank contractual saga surrounding his inactivity rumbles on, a seemingly optimistic Mikey Garcia has spoken to fighthype.com to further clarify the situation regarding his in ring return – a fight he intends to make at 140lb before reassessing his options.

Promotional disputes in boxing can sadly deprive a talented young fighter of crucial peak years in their careers. Most recently we have seen the likes of Andre Ward out of the ring for extended periods due to wrangling over contractual issues – yet at least he is now set to return on June 20th.

Another fighter losing massive chunks of his career is 2-weight world champion, undefeated Mexican-American, Mikey Garcia – brother of Oxnard based trainer Robert Garcia.

Garcia has been in contractual dispute with Bob Arum for some time now and last boxed in January of 2014 when he beat Juan Carlos Burgos.

Mikey Garcia to return ‘no later than April’

Mikey Garcia to return ‘no later than April’

Robert Garcia, brother and trainer of two weight world champion Mikey Garcia has said that the return is planed for this year and should take place before April.

Mikey has been out of the ring since his unanimous decision over Juan Carlos Burgos in January of 2014 meaning he has now been inactive for over a year and this could be fourteen or fifteen months by the time he is active again.

Whether or not ring rust could be a factor in his return is unknown at this stage but it wouldn’t be the first time a prospect came back from a layoff and was not the same fighter. Nevertheless it is good that his team and Top Rank seem to have resolved their issues and are getting the fighter back in the ring.
