Gennady Golovkin vs. Matthew Macklin – Preview

738On the 29th of June, Matthew Macklin will be handed his third attempt at the professional fighter’s ultimate prize in challenging WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Although there are considerably more avenues to take than days gone by, even consideration for a shot at a World Title lets you know you’re on the right path.

Macklin has the experience of the big occasion, few come bigger than the opportunity for an ‘Irishman’ to face lb for lb great Sergio Martinez on St Patricks day at Madison Square Garden.

A fight Macklin lost, but maintained stock after a good showing even forcing the champion to touch down in the 8th round. Preceding the Martinez fight, Macklin dropped a hugely controversial decision to hometown champion Felix Sturm. A faded Sturm, a solid champion in his own right seemed a little gun shy and overwhelmed by the pace set by Macklin. Although he came on strong late on, I scored the fight in Macklin’s favour as did the majority of media members at ringside. Macklin’ had every right to feel aggrieved and who knows? Maybe third time will be a ‘charm’ for the ‘Irishman’.

Golovkin-Macklin: A Great Fight for Boxing

739This Saturday night Gennady Golovkin will defend his WBA and IBO middleweight titles against his toughest opponent to date when he faces Matthew Macklin at the MGM Grand, Mashantucket.

The Kazakhstan native, known simply as ‘GGG’, likes to keep his fights as short as his nickname. He has gained a reputation as one of the most devastating punchers of recent times, boasting a KO ratio of 88.46%. The 31 year old champion has racked up 26 consecutive wins however he has never ventured past the 10th round.

Macklin is the first top 20 ranked middleweight to challenge ‘GGG’ and as such poses his stiffest test to date. ‘Mack the Knife’ is no stranger to big fights having shared a ring with both Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez.

Today we have WBA and IBO defending middleweight champion, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin with a record of 26 and 0, 23 knockouts and his challenger, top rated middleweight contender and former World Title challenger, Matthew “Mac the Knife” Macklin with 29 and 4 and 20 knockouts.

We also have Tom Loeffler, president of K2 Promotions, Golovkin’s promoter and GGG’s head trainer, Abel Sanchez. For team Macklin, we have promoter Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment, co-promoter, Brian Peters of Brian Peters Promotions and head trainer, Buddy McGirt. The HBO Boxing After Dark triple header begins at 9:45 pm Eastern Time and Pacific Time on Saturday, June 29 and takes place at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods.

Golovkin respects Macklin, thinks fight will be competitive

golovkin34WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) has a ton of respect for his June 29th opponent Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s), and he believes he is pretty evenly matched with him in terms of power, speed, and skills for their fight at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

Golovkin said to esnewsreporting.com, “I respect him, he’s a good man. It’s a very difficult fight for us because he is the same size, same speed, same power; different style. It’s a great fight.”

Macklin is about the same size as Golovkin, but there’s a difference in power and skill. Golovkin is just a much better fighter on the surface. Macklin has the same kind of speed, but the difference in skills and power will likely be enough for Golovkin to have a huge advantage in this fight.

Golovkin vs. Macklin: How can Matthew win this?

Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) has done an admirable job in losses to Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez when he’s stepped it up a level but he’s failed to get the win. He fought both of them very tough but he came up short because he didn’t have quite enough talent to beat them.

Macklin could be next for Golovkin

martinez4545A fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) and Matthew Macklin (26-4, 23 KO’s) is being discussed for the summer in June. Golovkin wants a high profile opponent and the 30-year-old “Mack the knife” Macklin fits that bill.

Golovkin’s management wants the Macklin fight and it now remains to be seen whether Macklin will agree to the fight. He recently had nose surgery and he’s only fought once in the past year, so there may be concern on his part that he might not be ready for a fighter in Golovkin’s talent level by June.

Macklin stopped Joachim Alcine in the 1st round last September, and before that Macklin was stopped in the 11th round by Sergio Martinez in March of last year. It’s good that Macklin rebounded from that defeat to destroy Alcine but that doesn’t mean much because Alcine is up there in age and he’s not in the class of Golovkin.

Live from Salle Des Etoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco, current WBA and IBO Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KOs) needed just a little over eight minutes to hand the usually durable Nobuhiro Ishida (24-9-2, 9 KOs) his first knock-out loss in 35 professional bouts.

Triple G’s 23rd knock-out as a prizefighter occurred only nine weeks after his previous stoppage victory over Junior Middleweight contender Gabriel Rosado, which happened on January 19th in Madison Square Garden in New York City.

A surprisingly aggressive Ishida claimed his spot in the center of the ring and attempted to dictate the pace of the action by working his long, rangy jab in round one. Ishida held his own during the first three minutes of the contest, while the incumbent champ circled the tall Japanese fighter to find openings for his own jab and straight right hand. Both men landed good shots and showed their respective beards in the opening stanza.

Bryan Vera: “I want Gennady Golovkin on March 30th after I’m victorious on FNF”

vera2By Joseph Herron – After WBA Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin’s methodical and impressive seven round destruction of customary Junior Middleweight contender Gabriel Rosado on January 19th, the Kazakhstani’s promoter, Tom Loeffler and K2, issued a statement announcing that the stone-fisted title holder would follow up his TKO performance on March 30, 2013.

While a challenger for the upcoming event has not yet been determined, perennial Middleweight contender and Texas native Bryan Vera (21-6, 12 KOs) has declared a genuine interest in facing the most avoided fighter in the packed 160 pound weight class.

“That’s the fight we originally wanted,” claims the 31 year old fighter. “We were being considered for the January 19th slot but ultimately didn’t land the fight. Team Golovkin and HBO decided to go with Gabriel Rosado instead. But we’re still hopeful that a championship opportunity against Gennady will happen in the near future. I would really love that fight.”
