Ariza picks Mayweather to beat Canelo
Strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza is picking Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) to beat WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) in their fight on September 14th on the Mexican Independence Day holiday. Ariza sees Mayweather’s experience being too much for the 22-year-old Canelo.
Ariza said on his twitter “I think Floyd’s skill and experience will be the difference.”
Ariza is probably right. Mayweather is much more skilled than Canelo is and ever will be.
Austin Trout wants on Mayweather-Canelo fight card on September 14th
Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) is hoping to get on the highly visible Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez card on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Trout expressed interest in his social media site, saying “Looking to get on the September card.”
De La Hoya: Mayweather will stand in the pocket against Canelo and he’ll be vulnerable
Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions feels he knows how WBA junior middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) is going to face his fighter WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
De La Hoya has it worked out in his head that Mayweather is going to stand and trade with the young, and much, much heavier Canelo like he did in his fight with Miguel Cotto last year in May. De La Hoya thinks this is going to leave the 36-year-old Mayweather vulnerable to Canelo’s heavy shots.
Mayweather-Canelo is a 50-50 fight, says Morales
Former four division world champion Erik Morales says he sees the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight as a toss-up for September 14th. Morales thinks it could either way due to Mayweather fighting a younger guy in the 22-year-old Canelo, who Morales feels showed a lot of improvement recently.
Morales said to oem.com.mx “I see the fight 50-50 possibilities for each. To me, the fight comes down to conditions such as age, experience, youth, desire…this fight is very even for me.”
A lot of people feel that Canelo’s weight advantage could be the factor in him getting a victory in this fight. He weighed 172 for his last fight and has been fighting in the mid-160s in his other fights at 154.
Beristain likes Canelo’s chances of beating Mayweather
Trainer Nacho Beristain, trainer for Juan Manuel Marquez, believes WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) has a good chance of beating Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) three months from now because of Canelo’s combination punching and ability to dodge punches with his head movement.
Beristain told deportes.univision.com “I want Canelo to win. It would be a historic achievement for the Mexican boxing world. I hope the result is good for Canelo. He has a good chance because he throws nice combinations and he avoids punches. He’s looking more solid and he’s definitely the new Mexican boxing idol.”
Mayweather vs. Canelo without rehydration limit
Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) gave his much heavier opponent Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) a real gift by not pushing for a rehydration limit for their catch-weight fight at 152 pounds on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This means that both fighters can rehydrate as much as they want after making the 152 lb. limit. That doesn’t mean much for Mayweather because he’ll likely come into the fight weighing around 146. But for Canelo, not having a rehydration limit will free him up to rehydrate to the 170s.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. just revealed that he’ll be facing Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight will take place at a catch-weight of 152 lbs, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. That still gives Canelo a big advantage because he only has to go two pounds lower than the normal 154 weight limit. If Mayweather had asked for a catch-weight at 150, then it would be a lot tougher on Canelo because he’s so huge for the junior middleweight class in terms of weight.
Mayweather said this on his social media site just now: “I chose my opponent for September 14th and it’s Canelo Alvarez. I’m giving fans what they want. It will be at the MGM Grand.”
