Lundy defeats Olusegun

lundy12Hank Lundy (23-3-1, 11 KO’s) showed a great deal of improvement tonight in pulling off a minor upset in defeating Ajose Olusegun (31-2, 14 KO’s) by a fairly one-sided 10 round unanimous decision at the Rockingham Park, in Salem, New Hampshire, USA. Lundy fought a lot like Floyd Mayweather Jr. in beating what turned out to be an over-matched Olusegun by the judges scores of 100-90, 98-92, 98-92.

Lundy hurt Olusegun multiple times in the fight with hard left hands to head. Olusegun had no defense for Lundy’s left hands, and he was eating them continuously from the 4th.

Lundy found out early in the fight that he could counter Olusegun when he’d throw jabs. He’d wait on the jabs and fire a left hand and nail Olusegun. In the 4th round, Lundy hit Olusegun with some big left hands. At point he went to the ropes after getting hit and faked like he was shaken up.

Broner sent a twitter of encouragement today to WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, telling him to beat his scheduled September 14th opponent Argentinian Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s), and that Broner would then take care of the other Argentinian, meaning Maidana.

Keith Thurman battles Diego Chaves for interim WBA 147 lb. title on 7/27

thurman432Unbeaten Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO’s) will be looking to pick up the interim WBA welterweight title this month against Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO’s) this month in a fight on July 27th televised by Showtime from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

If the 24-year-old Thurman can win this fight he’s going to then be putting a lot of pressure on WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner to make a big decision about whether he feels it’s worth it to hold onto the WBA title and face the dangerous Thurman or if it would be better off giving up the strap and looking for safer fights.

It’s an important move for Broner because if he takes the fight against Thurman, he’ll be taking a huge risk with his career because Thurman would have a big size advantage over Broner if that fight were to be made.

Berto to drop shoulder roll defense for Soto Karass fight

berto233Former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) says he’ll be going back to the basics in his fight against Jesus Soto Karass (27-8-3, 17 KO’s) this month in their fight on July 27th at the AT&T Center, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

In going back to the basics, Berto will be getting rid of the shoulder roll defense that he experimented with in his last fight against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero last November and going back to his old defensive style.

Berto tried out the shoulder roll and it was a disaster with Guerrero hitting him nearly at will for 12 rounds in beating Berto by a 12 round unanimous decision.

Donaire to try and make 122 for Darchinyan rematch

donaire#55Nonito Donaire (31-2, 20 KO’s) said the other night that he’s walking around at 145 lbs. right now, and he’s going to see if he can drop the weight to take a fight against Vic Darchinyan in October or November. However, he’s not really sure if he can take that much weight off without being brittle for his next fight, and he prefers that not happen.

If Donaire doesn’t feel good in trying to get down to 122, he’s going to move up to 126 and go after one of the world titles at that weight. Donaire would be looking to face the likes of Chris John or Evgeny Gradovich.
