I’ll have the last word in this. Mondragon is a racist. Mondragon, I would love to grab you by the throat and beat the hell out of every racist bone in your body. But we should handle you in a non-violent fashion. First, you should be banned from boxing for life. Second, you should be fined $2.5 million and the money should be used to combat the type of racism you pursue. And finally, you and all other racists should be sent to an uninhabited island where you establish a hell hole to live in.Posted May 11, 2014 9:26 pm

Broner’s post-fight comments carry zero weight in the sport or society. besides, it’s pretty obvious that he was trying to wordplay on the suffix of “can” and was publicly exposed as too stupid and “idnorant” to pull it off. Broner’s the opposite of clever, i.e., stupid, silly, idiotic, witless, brainless, vacuous, mindless, unintelligent, thoughtless, half-baked, harebrained, imprudent, incautious, injudicious, unwise; ill-advised, ill-considered, impolitic, rash, reckless, foolhardy, daft; dumb, dim, dimwitted, halfwitted, thick, crack-brained, crackpot, pea-brained, wooden-headed, dumb-ass, chowderheaded “don’t let your foolish impulses get you into trouble”. the opposite of sensible and wise. unless someone objects to this profile of Broner, let’s enter it into the record, be done with it, and look forward to watching Broner get his ass kicked once again, which he will. it’s beginning to appear like Broner is avoiding losses rather than winning fights in dominant fashion.Posted May 11, 2014 12:21 pm
Only read a few comments – good ones by eric below.
Going by boxing standards what AB said wasn’t that bad. OTOH, the author wrote at the end that he wasn’t making excuses for what AB said, but that’s exactly what he was doing for most of the article. I almost stopped reading when he brought up the racial privilege (whites) angle.
It’s racist in itself to constantly hold other races (blacks) to a lower standard b/c they’re “not in a position of power”. I have news for the lame author, few whites, Hispanics, Asians, etc. are in positions of power. The US has, by far, has the richest Afro decent population in the world…
There are too many excuses and double standards about “racism”, especially in the US. The author is clueless or has some agenda.Posted May 11, 2014 10:18 am

You made a thoughtful comment but you’re not getting the concept… Comedy roasts, locker room jokes, and gentle ribbing based on racial stereotypes are perfectly acceptable behavior, and not insensitive in the least.
On the other hand, racially hateful speech… racially arrogant speech… and racially insensitive and demeaning speech has a totally different context that any intelligent person can distinguish. Don Sterling made previous statements that were highly insensitive and arrogant, but the law as it reads offered no solution to his earlier comments. It wasn’t gentle ribbing it was crass.
It’s the difference between somebody giving you congratulatory slaps on the back or a playful punch in the tummy, or somebody who tries you knock your teeth out. One is acceptable behavior and does no harm, and the other is assault. It’s the intent that’s clear.Posted May 10, 2014 2:46 pm
I also belive in freedom of speech and were walking a very thin line in the world these day’s especially in the United States, our opinions and feelings are getting edited, banned and forsaken at an alarming rate, by the politically correct police, sometimes good sometimes bad.
With that said we still have freedom of speech and can say what we wish, but it comes with some criticism in some cases.
I can’t spell worth a crap but still have the freedom to participate in commentary, do I get made fun of, ofcourse I do, do I care, not at all.
I’d rather have poor spelling and make sometimes interesting insightful comments opposed to a great speller who is dumb as a pile of rock’s.Posted May 10, 2014 2:22 pm
We didn’t make the standard “white people” but obviously we are the standard as to what a racist comment is or isn’t.
I agree that sometimes media blows things out of proportion and is to sensitive but if that’s the way it’s gota be then everyone has to be held to the same standard otherwise that’s hypocrisy at the highest levels.

If a poor, stupid white man where to make the–let me get this right–“racially and culturally insensitive, disrespectful, arrogant, and lacking humility” comments, he would just be deemed a racist and not stupid. You posters on here are full of it!!!!
This is a real good and very very true article!!
It is so funny how you posters who disagree with this article try to make Broner into a racist yet he mentioned the same thing about Afri-CAN’s!!
But the even more ironic thing about what Adrien Broner did at the post fight interview is that he said the same thing a few years ago to Max Kellerman in a post fight interview after he beat Ponce de Leon!!! Broner called himself the CAN man and proceeded to say the same things about AfriCAN’s, MexiCAN’s and even DominiCAN’s.
But if I’m mistaking please correct me!?! When did MexiCAN or AfriCAN or AmeriCAN or even DominiCAN become a race???????
You internet fools stop trying to justify AB’s “word play” of the word CAN as something you fuel as racist!!!

Floyd is a c u n t.Posted May 10, 2014 6:00 am
Ridiculous article. This guy is writing this piece with racism burning in his own blood. True he does make some fair points but how he compares situations show he is clearly only thinking from an African American perspective. He compares Asians and Caucasians with the incentive to show how they get things their own way over some so called ‘Power’.
He then goes on to make a comment about One of the most powerful men in boxing, Floyd Mayweather. He mentions how Floyd was ‘misconstrued’. This was a terrible guy to pick as an example. He with that ‘Power’ made a fair comment about Jeremy Lin, but let’s not forget the racist comments he made about Manny Pacquaio in 2010 –
Was he misconstrued here?
Unfortunately, racism is alive and burning. I don’t see it ever fully going away. But it’s not just a black/white thing. It’s colour, religion, sex, appearance, right down to people of the same race making every day horrible comments about each other.
Let’s get back to the good old boxing talk and maybe talk about how these Boxing Promotional companies are starving the true fight fans of the best fights that can be made. There has being a decline in boxing due to people with bad attitudes towards each other and unfortunately this stops the best fights from being made. Something needs to change.Posted May 10, 2014 3:46 am

Sterling bought that scandalous hoe a 1.8 million dollar home, a bugotti and a ferrari. any man who spends that kind of fortune on a b1tch is going to tell her exactly which men she can and cant spend time with when hes not around. he was basically telling his girlfriend in so many words that he didnt want her banging black guys like magic johnson behind his back. very understandable considering about 1 out of 5 black men in the US has HIV or AIDS. look how she repayed his generosity…..by recording their private conversations and releasing them to media.
and now sterling is labeled an evil racist, has been fined millions, and being banned from the NBA for life. yet he never even said the n-word or any other racial slurs. he never said that he hates or despises black people. but all blacks in America want him severly punished and banned for life. why is its perfectly okay for jay-z to make racist remarks about whites in public even though hes part owner of the brooklyn nets? nobody is fining him millions or banning him for life. why this ridiculous double standard in this day and age? because black americans are by far the most racist people on earth and everyone else is supposed to ignore and live with it.Posted May 10, 2014 1:18 am

It’s sad that some people see things along racial and national lines, when really, it suits certain people in authority to keep us thinking that way. The poor American family with no or low income , growing debt, wayward children, etc is directly linked to the same family in Mexico or Estonia. The power of those like groups uniting scares the hell out of the establishment. That’s why they engulf us with nationalism, to separate us from natural allies and get us on their side. 40 % of American VN war forces were black. That is, poor black men and women fighting a war to support the interest of the people who keep them poor. Exactly the same was the case in WW1, when working class people across the British empire were brain washed into supporting royal families and banking interests. Be done with this nationalist madness. People need to be educated and made aware of how the world works and how similar normal folk across the globe really are.Posted May 9, 2014 10:06 pm

What Donald Sterling did was make private statements that were very racist and hateful. That’s why he was fined 2.5 million dollars ousted from the NBA and banned for life. Because he’s a jerk.
It’s not technically racist or hateful to say you’ll beat somebody of another race or nationality… that you just beat the fk out of them… or that you’ll never be beaten by them… Right now it’s constitutionally protected speech.
Therefore, the Civil Rights Act needs to be updated to ban racially insensitive speech. People shouldn’t be allowed to make racially provocative or insensitive remarks at any time … or under any circumstances.
Once those revisions happen you can fine people, you can fire them, you can oust and ban them, and basically get rid of them just for being azzholes… which will be a very good thing.

Hate is circular. People will hate you back every time. To suggest that one particular race cannot be racist, thereby excusing their racist and hateful remarks, is to encourage the use of those remarks. This helps keep racism alive.
I never fail to see someone proclaiming in these discussions that “everyone says these things.” They say that because they say these things themselves and assume everyone else does. They do not.Posted May 9, 2014 3:31 pm
Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. LionKing)
The real question is why are the moderators on ESB so poor? They allow trolls, they allow racial bigotry and I have seen comments that are s3xually deviant and repugnant being allowed.
That is the real question. Other sites allow you to tick a box to report it as seriously offensive material.
We need to police ourselves and not allow a free for all.
My thoughts after reading many of these threads is that society has actually gotten worse in regards to racism, the chasm between how people view each other and the level of deviancy has gotten outta hand. It’s really sad because to all intents and purposes we haven’t moved forward a step in accepting others since the great strides of the 60’s and is why so many t3rrorist groups are thriving, because in the end, no one seems to care.Posted May 9, 2014 3:23 pm

No double standards
Actually I believe African Americans ARE in a position power–as they are able to say and do things that others cannot. As a white kid who grew up in a multi-racial school district, I believe articles such as this contribute to young African American males believing it is okay to use racial epithets whenever they want to while maintaining that they are the victims. Take it from a victim of racial bullying and violence.
Many white people will view your article as a thinly veiled defense of another person simply because they’re the same race as you… I.e. a double standard. If you want equality–and truly believe we (white and black people) are equals–then ACT like it. You don’t see any white people of consequence defending sterling. Most white people want America to be equal and fair for all, but the absolute rush by black people to defend their own in any all situations makes many of us wonder if that is even possible.
Being honest–as it is not my intention to offend, but to get you to think about the impact of your actions.Posted May 9, 2014 3:11 pm

Race is associated with biology, whereas ethnicity is associated with culture.
In biology, races are genetically distinct populations within the same species; they typically have relatively minor morphological and genetic differences. Though all humans belong to the same species (Homo sapiens), and even to the same sub-species (Homo sapiens sapiens), there are small genetic variations across the globe that engender diverse physical appearances, such as variations in skin color.
Although humans are sometimes divided into races, the morphological variation between races is not indicative of major differences in DNA. For example, recent genetic studies show skin color may drastically change in as few as 100 generations, spanning 2,500 years, as a result of environmental influences. Furthermore, the DNA of two humans chosen at random generally varies by less than 0.1 percent. This is less genetic variation than other types of hominids (such as chimpanzees and orangutans), leading some scientists to describe all humans as belong to the same race — the human race.
Ethnicity is the term for the culture of people in a given geographic region, including their language, heritage, religion and customs. To be a member of an ethnic group is to conform to some or all of those practices.
Race and ethnicity can obviously overlap, but they are distinct. For example, a Japanese-American would probably consider herself a member of the Japanese or East Asian race, but, if she doesn’t engage in any of the practices or customs of her ancestors, she might not identify with the ethnicity, but might instead consider herself to be American.Posted May 9, 2014 1:23 pm
There is no need for a black and White combination. Personal responsibility and state of mind is more important. Broner is playing into the young black stereotype. Look at BET MTV etc.. Young black males are characterized as Gangsters Ignorant and uneducated. Now there is a movement into Young Athlete rich ignorant and uneducated. Floyd and Broner are the front runners into increasing the stereotype. But we know this is individual and not a group characteristic.Posted May 9, 2014 1:21 pm
What is Race?
What is Race? When some people use the “race” they attach a biological meaning, still others use “race” as a socially constructed concept. It is clear that even though race does not have a biological meaning, it does have a social meaning which has been legally constructed.
By . . .”biological race,” I mean the view of race espoused by Judge Tucker, and still popular today, that there exist natural, physical divisions among humans that are hereditary, reflected in morphology, and roughly but correctly captured by terms like Black, White, and Asian (or Negroid, Caucasoid, and Mongoloid). Under this view, one’s ancestors and epidermis ineluctably determine membership in a genetically defined racial group. The connection between human physiognomy and racial status is concrete; in Judge Tucker’s words, every individual’s race has been “stampt” by nature. . . .Despite the prevalent belief in biological races, overwhelming evidence proves that race is not biological. Biological races like Negroid and Caucasoid simply do not exist. A newly popular argument among several scholars, is that races are wholly illusory, whether as a biological or social concept. Under this thinking, if there is no natural link between faces and races, then no connection exists.
There are no genetic characteristics possessed by all Blacks but not by non- Blacks; similarly, there is no gene or cluster of genes common to all Whites but not to non-Whites. One’s race is not determined by a single gene or gene cluster, as is, for example, sickle cell anemia. Nor are races marked by important differences in gene frequencies, the rates of appearance of certain gene types. The data compiled by various scientists demonstrates, contrary to popular opinion, that intra-group differences exceed inter-group differences. That is, greater genetic variation exists within the populations typically labeled Black and White than between these populations. This finding refutes the supposition that racial divisions reflect fundamental genetic differences.
Notice this does not mean that individuals are genetically indistinguishable from each other, or even that small population groups cannot be genetically differentiated. Small populations, for example the Xhosa or the Basques, share similar gene frequencies. However, differentiation is a function of separation, usually geographic, and occurs in gradations rather than across fractures.. .. . . The notion that humankind can be divided along White, Black, and Yellow lines reveals the social rather than the scientific origin of race. The idea that there exist three races, and that these races are “Caucasoid,” “Negroid,” and “Mongoloid,” is rooted in the European imagination of the Middle Ages, which encompassed only Europe, Africa, and the Near East.. . Nevertheless, the history of science has long been the history of failed efforts to justify these social beliefs. Along the way, various minds tried to fashion practical human typologies along the following physical axes: skin color, hair texture, facial angle, jaw size, cranial capacity, brain mass, frontal lobe mass, brain surface fissures and convolutions, and even body lice. As one scholar notes, “[t]he nineteenth century was a period of exhaustive and–as it turned out–futile search for criteria to define and describe race differences.”. . . Attempts to define racial categories by physical attributes ultimately failed. By 1871, some leading intellectuals had recognized that even using the word “race” “was virtually a confession of ignorance or evil intent.” The genetic studies of the last few decades have only added more nails to the coffin of biological race. Evidence shows that those features usually coded to race, for example, stature, skin color, hair texture, and facial structure, do not correlate strongly with genetic variation. . . The rejection of race in science is now almost complete. In the end, we should embrace historian Barbara Fields’s succinct conclusion with respect to the plausibility of biological races: “Anyone who continues to believe in race as a physical attribute of individuals, despite the now commonplace disclaimers of biologists and geneticists, might as well also believe that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the tooth fairy are real, and that the earth stands still while the sun moves.”
. . . Unfortunately, few in this society seem prepared to fully relinquish their subscription to notions of biological race.. . .[including the] Congress and the Supreme Court. Congress’ anachronistic understanding of race is exemplified by a 1988 statute that explains that “the term ‘racial group’ means a set of individuals whose identity as such is distinctive in terms of physical characteristics or biological descent.” The Supreme Court, although purporting to sever race from biology, also seems incapable of doing so. In Saint Francis College v. Al-Khazraji, the Court determined that an Arab could recover damages for racial discrimination under 42 U.S.C. § 1981. . . Despite a seeming rejection of biological race, Justice White [stated]: “The Court of Appeals was thus quite right in holding that § 1981, ‘at a minimum,’ reaches discrimination against an individual ‘because he or she is genetically part of an ethnically and physiognomically distinctive subgrouping of homo sapiens.”‘. . . By adopting the lower court’s language of genetics and distinctive subgroupings, Justice White demonstrates the Court’s continued reliance on blood as a metonym for race. . . .In Metrobroadcasting v. FCC, Justice Scalia again reveals the Court’s understanding of race as a matter of blood. During oral argument, Scalia attacked the argument that granting minorities broadcasting licenses would enhance diversity by blasting “the policy as a matter of ‘blood,’ at one point charging that the policy reduced to a question of ‘blood . . . blood, not background and environment.”‘Posted May 9, 2014 1:20 pm
What racial groups are there?
A human race is defined as a group of people with certain common inherited features that distinguish them from other groups of people. All men of whatever race are currently classified by the anthropologist or biologist as belonging to the one species, Homo sapiens. This is another way of saying that the differences between human races are not great, even though they may appear so, i.e. black vs white skin. All races of mankind in the world can interbreed because they have so much in common. All races share 99.99+% of the same genetic materials which means that division of race is largely subjective, and that the original 3-5 races were also probably just subjective descriptions as well.
Most anthropologists recognize 3 or 4 basic races of man in existence today. These races can be further subdivided into as many as 30 subgroups.
Ethnographic division into races from Meyers Konversationslexikon of 1885-90 is listing:
Caucasian races (Aryans, Hamites, Semites)
Another popular division recognizes 4 major races
The world population can be divided into 4 major races, namely white/Caucasian, Mongoloid/Asian, Negroid/Black, and Australoid. This is based on a racial classification made by Carleton S. Coon in 1962. There is no universally accepted classification for “race”, however, and its use has been under fire over the last few decades. The United Nations, in a 1950 statement, opted to “drop the term ‘race’ altogether and speak of “ethnic groups”. In this case, there are more than 5,000 ethnic groups in the world, according to a 1998 study published in the Scientific American.Posted May 9, 2014 1:20 pm
Now, let’s define what a race actually is:
Race is a classification system used to categorize humans into large and distinct populations or groups by anatomical, cultural, ethnic, genetic, geographical, historical, linguistic, religious, and/or social affiliation. First used to refer to speakers of a common language and then to denote national affiliations, in the 17th century, people began to use the term to relate to observable physical traits. Such use promoted hierarchies favorable to differing ethnic groups. Starting from the 19th century, the term was often used, in a taxonomic sense, to denote genetically differentiated human populations defined by phenotype.
Social conceptions and groupings of races vary over time, involving folk taxonomies that define essential types of individuals based on perceived traits. Scientists consider biological essentialism obsolete, and generally discourage racial explanations for collective differentiation in both physical and behavioral traits.
Even though there is a broad scientific agreement that essentialist and typological conceptualizations of race are untenable, scientists around the world continue to conceptualize race in widely differing ways, some of which have essentialist implications. While some researchers sometimes use the concept of race to make distinctions among fuzzy sets of traits, others in the scientific community suggest that the idea of race often is used in a naive or simplistic way, and argue that, among humans, race has no taxonomic significance by pointing out that all living humans belong to the same species, Homo sapiens, and subspecies, Homo sapiens sapiens.
Since the second half of the 20th century, the associations of race with the ideologies and theories that grew out of the work of 19th-century anthropologists and physiologists has led to the use of the word “race” itself becoming problematic. Although still used in general contexts, race has often been replaced by other words which are less ambiguous and emotionally charged, such as populations, people(s), ethnic groups, or communities, depending on context.Posted May 9, 2014 1:17 pm
Some of you are getting confused with what racism actually means, so here’s a definition:
Racism is actions, practices or beliefs, or social or political systems that consider different races to be ranked as inherently superior or inferior to each other, based on presumed shared inheritable traits, abilities, or qualities. It may also hold that members of different races should be treated differently. While most conceptualizations of racism include the notion of “race based discrimination”, the exact definition is controversial both because there is little scholarly agreement about the meaning of the concept “race”, and because there is also little agreement about what does and does not constitute discrimination.
Some definitions consider that any assumption that a person’s behavior would be influenced by their racial categorization is inherently racist, regardless of whether the action is intentionally harmful or pejorative, because stereotyping necessarily subordinates individual identity to group identity. In sociology and psychology, a common view distinguishes prejudice from racism, holding that racism is best understood as ‘prejudice plus power’ because without the support of political or economic power, prejudice would not be able to manifest as a pervasive cultural, institutional or social phenomenon. Other definitions only include consciously malignant forms of discrimination. Among the questions about how to define racism are the question of whether to include forms of discrimination that are unintentional, such as making assumptions about preferences or abilities of others based on racial stereotypes, whether to include symbolic or institutionalized forms of discrimination such as the circulation of ethnic stereotypes through the media, and whether to include the socio-political dynamics of social stratification that sometimes have a racial component. Some definitions of racism also include discriminatory behaviors and beliefs based on cultural, national, ethnic, caste, or religious stereotypes. Some critics of the term argue that the term is applied differentially, with a focus on such prejudices by whites, and in ways that define mere observations of any possible differences between races as racism.
Racism and racial discrimination are often used to describe discrimination on an ethnic or cultural basis, independent of whether these differences are described as racial. According to the United Nations convention, there is no distinction between the terms racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination, and superiority based on racial differentiation is scientifically false, morally condemnable, socially unjust and dangerous, and that there is no justification for racial discrimination, in theory or in practice, anywhere.
In history, racism was a driving force behind the transatlantic slave trade, and behind states based on racial segregation such as the U.S. in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and South Africa under apartheid. Practices and ideologies of racism are universally condemned by the United Nations in the Declaration of Human Rights. It has also been a major part of the political and ideological underpinning of genocides such as The Holocaust, but also in colonial contexts such as the rubber booms in South America and the Congo, and in the European conquest of the Americas and colonization of Africa, Asia and Australia.Posted May 9, 2014 1:15 pm

What would you say Rudy? Would you stick to your line that “black people cannot be racist”? If not, why not?

Very true about Hopkins.
Imagine that Vitali Klitschko had said that white fighters are genetically superior to blacks in intelligence: “It’s no secret, we just have a higher IQ. It’s called genetics”.
Or imagine that Calzaghe had said “I’ll NEVER lose to a black boy! I’ll NEVER lose to a black boy!”, over and over again.
Or imagine that Ricky Hatton had called Pacquiao a “little yellow chump” and that “once I stomp the midget, I’ll make that little yellow f u cker make me a sushi roll and cook me some rice”.
It’s very hard to imagine, isn’t it?
Well first, because unlike Hopkins and Mayweather, Klitschko, Calzaghe and Hatton are not racists.
And second, because when it comes to racist remarks, there are blatant double standards.
Rudy thinks these double standards are just fine. He likes double standards, so long as they favour “non-white” people. After all, if it weren’t for double standards which “positively discriminate” in favour of “non-white” people, he would never have got into university or have the job that he now has.
And yet he has the audacity to claim that it is always “white people” who benefit from racial discrimination, and that if a “white” person accuses a “black” person of racism — even in cases like Hopkins saying that European athletes are “genetically inferior” — it’s the “white” people who are guilty of racism, since they’re just trying “to mask their own white privilege, power, and racial bias”!!Posted May 9, 2014 12:11 pm
Comments were not racist, just ignorant as hell. The context in which he said it made him sound like he was attacking a race. Calling a Mexican a Mexican isn’t racist though. No group or “race” has a monopoly on racism, and no one group “invented” it. Racism is not a “virus”. It’s one form of Us/Them, In-Group/Out-Group behaviour that exists everywhere and has been around far longer than the human race itself.Posted May 9, 2014 11:49 am

The scariest thing is that Rudy now has a job as “an intercultural relations specialist at Gonzaga University’s Unity Multicultural Education Center”.
So what would happen if some Philipino student at the university came to Rudy badly beaten up, saying that some black kids had been bullying him and racially abusing him for months? What if they told him that — influenced by Floyd Mayweather Jr — they’ve been calling him a “little yellow chum p”, threatening to “kick his yellow midget a ss”, saying that he “eats cats and dogs”, and telling him to “make some sushi rolls and cook some rice” for them?
What would Rudy say? One can only imagine it’d be something like this:
“I’m sorry you’ve been so badly beaten up, but you should understand that black men are not capable of racism. Black people are always the victims of racism, but never the instigators. Are you sure these kids who have been bullying you weren’t white?”
How did someone so stupid and confused ever get such a job? More “positive discrimination”?Posted May 9, 2014 9:31 am

Exactly. And small wonder given that he dropped those classes, and (as he puts it himself) “resist[ed] the help that the school offered”!
So after being handed a scholarship which he admits his SAT scores did not merit, he then refused to take advantage of it.
Small wonder that he still can’t write, and that he still has no idea how to evaluate evidence, construct rational arguments, etc.
Of course, Rudy clearly believes that he can write now, but that’s only because he does not know what he does not know, so is ignorant of all the mistakes he’s making. He tells us that he decided long ago never again to submit a piece of writing for critical appraisal, and probably just tells himself that those who do criticise his writing are being “racist”.
In short, Rudy is is living in a delusional little world in which “white people” are doing nothing but trying to keep him down. The truth, of course, is that if it were not for some white people UNFAIRLY DISCRIMINATING AGAINST OTHER WHITE PEOPLE, he would never have received that scholarship, or the job that he has now.
You’d think that the very fact that he received the scholarship over other people who actually deserved it would make him feel grateful to the society that made it possible for him.
But no, not a bit of it: instead, he continues to feel sorry for himself, while boasting about how he squandered the education that was given to him.
He has probably never spared a passing thought for the poor kid who never made it to university, just so that he (Rudy) could be given a chance he hadn’t rightly earned, and subsequently squandered.Posted May 9, 2014 9:14 am

I do understand that white people have had over half a century of privilege due to true racism but it does not give any of the so called less privileged races to make racist comments themselves. Also Floyd calling Manny Poochio and saying he eats dogs is racist and B-Hop’s I will never lose to a white boy also. Can you imagine if a white boxer called a black boxer a racist name and said he can eat his ‘collared greens and chitlins’ he would be hung. It really is no wonder that you did so badly on your SATs, Rudy.
A word of advice: you are not cut out for thinking, or writing, or voicing opinions on complex social issues that are worth writing down.
You used to be good at football (“soccer”), right? Well, perhaps you can try and learn to coach.
But again, that UC Irvine education was wasted on you. You received the scholarship because you are deemed to be “non-white”. It’s called “positive discrimination”, but what it really means is that poor white kids with far better grades than you never got a chance to go to university. They didn’t get the chance because some other white people wanted to encourage people like you to try to do better for yourselves. Do you understand that Rudy?
And yet you skipped classes, and never learnt to write properly, nor how to think rationally.
Yet now you think you can write.
You can’t Rudy. You should have stayed in remedial class.
And what do you write? That all white people are born with power and privilege, and that black and non-white people are always the victims, never the purveyors, of racism.
But just think Rudy: if white people are only interested in keeping black/non-white people down, why do you think you received that scholarship while more deserving white kids were denied that opportunity?
You should be shamed, Rudy. You are an ungrateful hypocrite and a fool. Don’t bother going back to writing class: you will never have what it takes to make it as a writer.
But considering all the the opportunities in life that were handed to you, and which you squandered, you really ought to show a whole lot more gratitude and humility. In particular, you ought to think about why you were handed a university education, and now have a job (god knows how: one can only assume more “positive discrimination”). Did you really earn it Rudy?

@anonymous, it wasn’t about Britain wanting to invade America, but more about aiding the Southerners, much like the French and Dutch aided George Washington in the American war of independence. The Confederates were in touch with the British leaders.Posted May 8, 2014 11:00 pm
@Assyrian god. The British bought lots of cotton and other agricultural goods from America. Britain had a massive textile industry, etc.
I agree two wrongs don’t make a right. Once African leaders taste power they don’t want to leave. Africa should welcome any good person who has something to offer the continent regardless of race.Posted May 8, 2014 10:48 pm
@Bears. i’m not saying that the Civil War had nothing to do with Blacks. All I’m saying is that the Civil War was not fought to free Blacks. It was only after the war had started that Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation about ‘freeing Blacks’ because he did not want the British to enter the war on the side of the Confederates. Britain was then a major power. Even after the civil war had ended, Blacks had to deal with the ‘Black Codes’ and all that it entailed.Posted May 8, 2014 10:41 pm

Proud African, that is well said. Many other countries need to clean up their act as well. Not their people but their governments as their governments are not representative of what their people embody. Foremost influencial in messing up other countries governments are the united states and Israel. They are the shapers of world policy and at the root of those two countries are world banks including the private federal reserve. @Assyrian god. You should read about Rhodesia/Zimbabwe and the apartheid they faced. Mugabe did not come out of thin air. About the genocide in Rwanda, the Belgians colonized the place. The Tutsis and Hutus were the two tribes. The Belgians measured their skulls and made the Tutsis supreme over the Hutus. The Tutsis were given the best of everything. This led to hatred between the two tribes. The French army was there when the genocide happened. They allowed the Hutus that committed the genocide to flee. But Africa has to clean up its act. There are too many greedy people who want to become President in Africa. Africa has never had peace though because the continent has too many resources that other countries want.Posted May 8, 2014 10:29 pm
Anonymous. I believe that a fellow human can help a human. I don’t see an obligation that there is a duty and an elitism in being white.Or in being american. America is falling to pieces at the seems because we have troops stationed on 170 countries and act like we are the peace keeper of the entire world, we also start and manipulate wars throughout the globe. The Ukranians do not need our help, neither did the Egyptians or the Syrians. Black people and Hispanics do not need some BS hypocrital white ” we will lift you up” type anything. @anonymous, at that time the British had abolished slavery. The Industrial Revolution had begun and machines had begun to take replace much manual labour. When Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that he wanted to free slaves on moral grounds in America it prevented the British and French from siding with the Confederates. The Civil War was fought because of business reasons. The Northern states were industrialized, they had the big banks and and served as middlemen in selling goods to the Europeans. The Southern Whites felt they would make more money by selling directly to the Europeans. They made an enormous amount of money from slavery. The seceding of the Southern states was bad news for the North.Posted May 8, 2014 10:20 pm

Their purpose is money and money only, not to assist you people and the only way to accomplish that is stir up tension for the most minute of things. @Sean Patrick. Africans never sent a delegation to Whites that they were selling slaves. Whites came to Africa, caused trouble between the tribes (Africa is made up of different tribes), gave them alcohol, guns, etc. and after the wars they got some of their African collaborators to give them the slaves. That’s a fact. Many Africans also fought against slavery. Not all Africans are good, but most are. Fact is everywhere whites go its the same story, Aryan Whites in India, annihilated the Native Americans, and yes, what about the Australian aborigines? You really need to return to remedial writing class, buddy.
I know you’ve been told this before, but you need to structure your writing with a proper introduction and conclusion.
Am I saying something you don’t understand, Rudy?
You know, you should remember that you were given a scholarship to study at UC Irvine — in spite of the fact that you had dreadful High School and SAT results — BECAUSE YOU ARE “NON-WHITE”.
You were given this opportunity, please remember, AT THE EXPENSE OF FAR MORE DESERVING STUDENTS WITH HIGHER GRADES.
As you yourself have written:
“I earned [sic.] an athletic scholarship to play on the men’s team at UC Irvine. Had it not been for that, my grades weren’t going to take me anywhere but to a community college. […] I had people in the residence halls tell me ‘You shouldn’t have a scholarship. You shouldn’t come to this school just because you have athletic ability. I had a higher GPA and higher SAT score, I should be the one with the scholarship not you.'”
Those people were right, Rudy: you were given privileges you had not earnt. It might have been okay if you had taken advantage of the advice that was offered to you, and attended all the classes and tutorials that had been paid for you.
But you didn’t, did you Rudy?
No, you couldn’t take constructive criticism, and so made an early decision “to never, ever go back to get help” and to “go it alone”.
This meant that you wasted that expensive education, Rudy. You wasted it. And that’s why you STILL can’t write as well as your average white 16-year-old, why you STILL have no idea how to construct an even-handed argument, and why your weak, incoherent arguments have been trounced by uneducated blue-collar boxing fans here.
Is there something I’m saying that you don’t understand, Rudy? Do you need me to explain this in Spanish?Posted May 8, 2014 7:45 pm
Adrien Broner is an ass no doubt but this all silly. What he said was classless but falls short of racism I think. I don’t agree with everything in this article but the gist of it is correct. This kid pisses people off because he’s brash and classless and someone decided to stick it to him. Move on. Adrien’s problem is that he thinks he’s funny and clever and surrounds himself with yes men. Thus when he speaks in public his lack of humor, wit or general intelligence makes him look like a total tool. I suspect if his money or fame dried up so would his posse. His story will work itself out. he has neither the talent nor the career momentum to go much further without serious setbacks.Posted May 8, 2014 7:37 pm

this site won’t let me print what Alan Minter said to Marvin Hagler back in 1980!!!!Posted May 8, 2014 7:03 pm
For all you who forgot.
Alan Minter’s comments to Marvin Hagler that caused a riot.
Somewhere between the racial tensions in the build-up and the rioting at Wembley Arena in the aftermath, a fight broke out…
If the booing greeting Hagler’s arrival to the ring on the night was inevitable, and the disrespectful whistling of the US national anthem by a minority not totally unexpected, the hostility in the crowd was something else. “Wembley Arena was reeking, not so much of nationalism, but had a decidedly rancid smell of racialism,” noted Harry Carpenter after the fight, and stories of over-zealous fans ripping up any banners held by Hagler supporters were commonplace. Hagler’s wife, Bertha, was advised to leave her stars and stripes flag safely tucked away, through fears of trouble. Very wise.
The natives were not amused. Disappointment at seeing their boy battered, combined with an unjustified rage towards Berrocal for stopping the fight, led to an explosion in anger within Wembley Arena. Beer bottles and cans rained down on the ring, Hagler’s celebrations cut short as his corner surrounded him to protect the new champion. With the help of the police, Hagler and his corner were bundled to safety, but for the VIPs (including Telly Savalas) and commentators ringside, there was little or no hiding place.
“And there is chaos here, absolute chaos. I’m smothered in beer and so are all my colleagues around me,” said an understandably shaky Carpenter, who was struck on the head by a bottle. Some hid under the ring apron, others lifted upturned chairs over their heads as a temporary shelter, as missiles continued to fly towards them.Posted May 8, 2014 7:02 pm

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. LionKing)
Let me clarify this issue for all (including Rudy Mondragon — the confused hack who wrote of this poor excuse for an article) on exactly why it was a racist/bigoted comment.
BOTH Molina and Broner are Americans by nationality. Therefore, when AB made that rude, arrogant and inflammatory comment that totally racialized the outcome of the fight, he turned it into a racial issue. That’s why it was a derogatory, racist/bigoted comment by definition.
This pundit writes,” A racist position would be someone who said something of someone from a different race with language and a tone of hate and power over another racial group.” Wrong! “Language and tone of hate” has absolutely nothing to do with definitions of “racism,” bigotry” or “prejudice.” That’s a fact!
However, Broner’s comment certainly carried a tone of power and dominance over another racial group. When Broner said: “Afri-Cans… I just beat the f*ck outta of a Mexi-Can!!,” he was making a celebratory statement that he had just beaten and proved African-American dominance and power over countrymen of a different race. Again, that’s why it was a derogatory, racist/bigoted comment by definition.
If a Latino or white fighter would’ve made that same comment about a black fighter, he would be heavily fined, banned by the WBA and WBC, and threatened with a lifetime ban from boxing. Let’s not kid ourselves here. The white guy would be fined the heaviest; banned by the WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO for an set period of time; and quite possibly banned for life. Clearly, it’s a double-standard.
This is an issue about racial equality in 2014. It’s not about American history or world history and what transpired 200 or more years ago. If you really want racial equality in America, everyone — including African-Americans — must be held to the same standard. That’s only FAIR and it’s the only path to true equality. If you don’t believe you’re racial/ethnic group should be held to the same standard, then you’re not at all serious about equality. You believe your group deserves special treatment (privilege), thereby are tying to maximize your advantages, leverage and power over other groups in matters of race relations. That’s as REAL as it gets!
So no, Broner is definitely NOT a “scapegoat” you closed- minded idiots. He made a derogatory, racist/bigoted comment that was inflammatory and provocative, both literally and in tone. He’s barley being held accountable for it, yet millions of “victims” who constantly complain about discrimination want to give him a free pass. Un-f*ckin’ believable!!!Posted May 8, 2014 5:23 pm
What a perfect circular argument — only white people can be racists (because all of them are rich and powerful) and no one from any other race has any power and thus cannot be a racist. Hmmm. Before you attack the author, however, be aware that, that line of reasoning is taught in almost every major university sociology and psychology program. It provides the perfect dodge for any and all responsibility for anything that goes wrong.Posted May 8, 2014 5:16 pm

Not only that but I never thought I would have something in common with AB, neither of us are in a position of power nullifying any hint of racism on our part. Woohoo! Mr. Mondragon, thank you for opening my eyes because I thought for many years that I should never use words such as N!@@* or chink or jap or jaime or gip or wetback (oops that’s me) in referencing another human…you know “honky” just never seemed hurtful enough to me I know that it’s appropriate now. “Although what Broner said this past Saturday night after his victory over Carlos Molina was racially and culturally insensitive, disrespectful, arrogant, lacked humility, and ignorant, I would not say that it was racist. A racist position would be someone who said something of someone from a different race with language and a tone of hate and power over another racial group.”Posted May 8, 2014 5:08 pm

Al not so Sharpton on video has called whites vulgar racist name’s, does he have a show on a news network ? Yes.

This is one dumbass article written by a moron. Just because you’re a minority doesn’t mean you can’t have power. Broner is a millionaire!! Is this guy really saying that he has no power? LOL! I don’t know who the idiot was years ago that told my ppl (blacks) that racism requires power is, but he wasn’t thinking critically either. Racism is simply feeling other races are inferior or that you despise other races on the basis of race. Broner expressed a superiority over Mexicans and Africans in his last fight. I hate when I hear other black ppl insinuate that it’s not possible for blacks to be racist. It’s one of the most ignorant things we can think. Broner screwed up and he needs to apologize, period. And for those who think it wasn’t racist, you know if a white man in Broner’s position said “I just kicked the f#@* out of a black man” everyone would be up in arms. Blacks would see it as him not just happy about the win, but especially happy that the guy he beat was black. That’s racism, plain and simple. It’s time we as a people took responsibility for our actions and stopped covering for idiots who bring down our race. Racism is wrong for EVERYONE, not just white ppl.Posted May 8, 2014 5:05 pm

Great article. That was my person opinion. Because of the Donald Sterling issue, they were looking for a black man to call a racist. What Broner did was what a lot of athletes do; he did a play on words. He said “I’m the Can Man. I’ll beat an Afri-CAN and a Mexi-CAN.” How is that a racist statement? Broner was punished for being too arrogant, not for being a racist. And furthermore, it doesn’t matter what Broner says, he’s comments won’t keep a Mexican from getting a job, a home, a new car, etc. That’s what real racism does, underline ISM. ISM is short for SYSTEM.Posted May 8, 2014 4:57 pm
They were angry that all the Latinos lost that night. He does the “can man” line every fight. He said African first. If I were him I’d Make a video flushing the WBC belt down the toilet.Posted May 8, 2014 4:57 pm

There is a war on us caucasians and christians also. I say everyone again. We are all brothers. Dont fall for the race baiters like jackson and sharpton or any racist person of any color!Posted May 8, 2014 4:56 pm
so if i read this “author ” correctly it;s impossible for broner to be racist simply because he’s not a Caucasian only a caucasian can be racist “writer” is a damn fool with no experience in the real worldPosted May 8, 2014 4:56 pm
Mexican isn’t a country, Mexico is a country.
Have you ever been on vacation to Mexican ?Posted May 8, 2014 4:53 pm
The author is racist, look broner is a black man and who he beat is a Mexican from what I understand, what does this really have to do with a white man, do we really have to take the blame for everything ??
People really need to stop trying to make those of this time that have clean hands and are innocent of racism pay for the crimes of completely different individuals of the past.
I do not have any white guilt, I would have to be guilty of something to feel that emotion and I do not.
Do you want to be punished for the crimes of others ?
It’s starting to seem to me that in America there’s no war on women yet a war on white men.
Broner says he beat a Mexicans azz and its because white menbare privileged.
I’m white and nothing had every been handed to me on a silver platter yet only a paper plate and that was if I was lucky.
This is all media propaganda nonsense, is there racism, ofcourse there is and it comes from all directions and races and isnt right any way you look at it.
We all should be accountable no matter who we are, case closed.Posted May 8, 2014 4:51 pm
throwing stones from the glass house
the author of this article is obviously extremely racist and of much lower intelligence than they’re trying to portray themselves as. if that isn’t startlingly apparent to you within the first few seconds of reading this pile of tripe you’re even dumber than they are.Posted May 8, 2014 4:48 pm

Just don’t interview this fool and he will irelevant in Boxing. He didn’t learn from Maidana’s beat down. He will learn again from Garcia, Alexander, Porter, Thurman, Bradley, Marquez, Paco, provaken, Khan, Mathysess. Ignore this article guys. Its 2014. Broner said some dumbshyt but best thing we can do as humans is rise above racism.Posted May 8, 2014 4:39 pm
You should be ashamed of yourself for writing this article and defending the biggest clown in boxing. It makes me sick.Posted May 8, 2014 4:29 pm
This article is crap. The author is trying to sound intelligent but comes off as a dolt. You cannot generalise an entire colour of people. There are privileged people of all colours, just as there is not. This author has an agenda but will never be convincing enough to start any real trouble.Posted May 8, 2014 4:28 pm
This is a thougthful and well considered piece.
It wasn’t so much what Broner said, but the way he said it, that was offensive.
If his comments had been directed at a white fighter then, yes, I would agree with the author’s sentiments. I speak here as a white man living in Scotland who lived for many years in the US.
But there is a race hierarchy in existence within the hip hop culture – not black culture but hip hop culture – which views Mexicans as inferior. It is here where Broner and his comments are located.
Symbolically, Broner’s derogatory comments were made worse by the fact he stated them to a white man – a representative of the white corporate power structure, no less, who then rebuked him in a very paternalistic way.
My point is that on a number of levels, Broner – albeit unwittingly – reinforced racial stereotypes with one unfortunate comment on national television.
He isn’t a racist. He is a victim of racism. All blacks living in America are, whether they know it or not.Posted May 8, 2014 4:28 pm
Flash knock down
See this is the problem with white people they see and hear what they want to hear and see. Broner said Africans , F ing Mexicans it was in context nothing more. There is no way that can be seen as racist. You wrote a great article and the racist hate it because it spells everything out. Sorry racist white people you have been found out again that’s why you are crying out.Posted May 8, 2014 4:26 pm
this black dude tried to beat me, but my whitey power was too strongPosted May 8, 2014 4:26 pm
Broner in fact called himself the “can” man: beating Ameri-”cans”, Afri-”cans”, and Mexi-”cans”. I don’t think that it was meant to be a racist statement, and the real issue was the fact that he used the f-word before saying Mexi-”can”.
^Whitey CAN’t say ANYTHING like this. Nothing at all. CAN not do it. Double standard. I realize some of you CAN’t understand because you’ve had a pass for so long. It’s about time you see the absurdity in it, as for the past 30 years of my life I understand whitey has had to deal w/ it and keep his mouth shut about it. Blacks for decades have made racial remarks w/o consequences. Charles Barkely flat out said he hates white people, now he has a cushy job on TNT. Floyd made racial remarks about Manny; nothing became of it. Shaq made comments about Yao Ming. The list is on and on. These guys all got passes.
Floyd Mayweather is the richest man in all of sports. Obama has the #1 position in the WORLD. So far from any oppression. Hmmm….I have no explanation.Posted May 8, 2014 4:22 pm

imagine klitco saying,” I just beat the f-ing sh7t out of a black” what would happen then?Posted May 8, 2014 4:19 pm
I fear that this article is fuel for an argument which a majority of society has been able to deal with long ago.
I agree, Broner is an egotistical fool, but not a racist.
If you are going to use a dictionary definition of racist to start and support your argument, then it must be used in context- and not to support an argument in 2014. Judging by the superiority of ‘white’ it must have been conceived at least 50 years ago.
I am disappointed with the wbc’s decision to suspend Broner, they are a supposed governing body who act out of capitalist greed andnot out of respect for our ‘noble art’
I am also disappointed with Eastside’s publication of this article .Posted May 8, 2014 4:18 pm
I’m black, and you just don’t say sh#t like that period! Now what if a white man beat Broner and then said he just beat the fck,,, out a Ngga. There would be a riot by our black people.Posted May 8, 2014 4:15 pm

well, black folks have had a pass for so long that they seem to have a ‘problem’ understanding. if it was a white guy, omg, he’d lose his career and sponsors over it. who started the whole sensitivity issue over race related comments. ask jessie jackson and al sharpton. they’d be all over the place with their noses in the mix if it was a white guy talking about afriCANs. pffffff
look @ rudy setting the bait; easy assignment for you today huh.Posted May 8, 2014 4:00 pm
He’s black so in the medias eyes its ok. But don’t let it be a white person……..Posted May 8, 2014 3:59 pm
Your a complete dumbass,, u are saying black people cant be racist., totally wrong , its because of people like you that the only real racism comes from black people these days because they think there excluded from the equation., you really let your racism shine in your rant. Suppose the invation of whites and europeans into top boxers are racism to? Next article please try to use a braincell before u write sumthing stupid.Posted May 8, 2014 3:55 pm
Broner says a lot of off the wall stuff… but honestly I didn’t think that was a racist comment at all. People are just too darn sensitive these days and I guess they’re just still salty about what the Clippers owners’ said.

Browner vs MathyssePosted May 8, 2014 3:37 pm
In my eyes anyone who says what he said is racist is 100% wrong, and there is not one out there that could make me change my mind.
He did not use Mexican in a derogatory way at all.
He said he beat up a Mexican, and that’s it.
Broner is an Idiot, and needs another beating, but what he said was not racist.Posted May 8, 2014 3:29 pm
