The obvious reluctance for most of the top middleweights to stop up to the GGG challenge devalues the division, but then at the end of the day boxing is a business. Proters and managers are risk averse.
“I think Martinez beats GGG right now. GGG is a good young fighter but i dont think hes ready for Maravilla yet.”
That has to be the funniest comment I’ve read in ages!!! HAHAHAHAHA!
Martinez stands NO CHANCE against GGG. None! Zero!Posted January 11, 2014 2:01 pm
Martinez doing his best to avoid GGG and fight a freaking 154 pounder who really is a natural 147 pounder.Posted January 10, 2014 5:27 pm
Recent reports indicate Gennady wants to clean out the 160-pound division before moving up to super middleweight. That’s a sound decision, since his ratings on HBO are going through the roof. Look for GGG to fight guys like Murray, Bursak, Lemieux or Soliman in some exciting televised battles this year.Posted January 10, 2014 1:13 pm
I think Martinez beats GGG right now. GGG is a good young fighter but i dont think hes ready for Maravilla yet. I got GGG over Quillin. A great fight would b GGG vs Chavez jr. i would love to see that fight. Both come foward and big puchers. Very explosive fight.Posted January 10, 2014 12:56 pm
Boxtradamus, thanks for the reply, but I still think you have it a little mixed up. There is a difference between being interested in fighting Canelo or Mayweather (for which GGG has stated he would be willing to move down to 154) and looking for someone to defend his 160 title against. The guys who have moved up in weight to fight Golovkin have done so because Golovkin was unable to find anyone at 160 to fight him at the time. Golovkin didn’t call out Rosado and ask him to move up to 160, Rosado’s team heard that GGG was having trouble finding an opponent so they suggested that Gabe would be willing to take the fight. The same is true of Ishida and Ouma, who were the only other fighters to have come up in weight to fight him, and they only did so because no one else was willing and the opportunity was available. If Golovkin gets a chance to fight the big names at 154, he will move down to accommodate them, unless of course they want to challenge for his middleweight belt. There’s no hypocrisy here, just a guy who is desperately looking for good quality opponents, and having a hard time doing so.Posted January 10, 2014 3:47 am
Eagle Eyes THANK you for the compliment. I made UP my name by MYSELF. As for GGG it IS hypocritical to have 154 lbers move UP when GGG won’t move UP HIMSELF. When you ask someone else to DO what you won’t DO thats called being a HYPOCRITE…I DO admire Gennady’s SKILLS but I must tell it how it IS.Posted January 10, 2014 3:12 am
Gonzo the Dragonborn
Man I miss Gonzo. What a great poster that guy was. Easily the best to ever grace these boards! He’s extremely knowledgeable, fantastic sense of humour and a razor sharp wit, suave, sophisticated and debonair, and when he was donning his serious hat he was practically impossible to defeat in a debate. No one could administer an ass-whooping like that guy. lol. He would cut through the pretenders and expose their lack of knowledge and intellectual paucity like a hot knife through butter, and although he was absolutely ruthless and unforgiving when doing so, he always managed to make it fun and entertaining for his fanbase. Such a shame he left us to live the life of a vulture.Posted January 10, 2014 2:09 am
Legitimately, correction.Posted January 10, 2014 1:49 am
And if there is a hypocrite in the middleweight division it is Quillin. He claims that a fight with Golovkin isn’t possible because of the promotional rift, and then he goes ahead and calls out Martinez! Doesn’t he realize that Sergio fights on HBO just like Golovkin does?Posted January 9, 2014 11:09 pm
Boxtradamus, that’s a nice handle, but I disagree with your statements. Golovkin is a middleweight, not a super middleweight, he doesn’t have to move up in weight to prove himself. People mistake Golovkin’s intentions, they have said that they want to clean out their own division first, which is fair and proper, what people misunderstand is that they are willing to move up or down in weight if the right offer is made to them. No offer has been made by Ward or anyone else at 168. Now it’s true that Andre Dirrell has called him out, but no contract has been offered to GGG about that so it remains to be seen if Dirrell is serious. Personally, I think Andre is no longer relevant, but once again we will have to wait and see.Posted January 9, 2014 11:05 pm
GGG only Fights on HBO and Quillin only Fights on ShowtimePosted January 9, 2014 10:46 pm
Quilling has no excuse. GGG is promoted by K2 not Top Rank. He’s the definition of paper champion.Posted January 9, 2014 10:03 pm
He’ll take on the Top guys at 154 but he won’t take on the Top guys at 168. HypocritePosted January 9, 2014 8:34 pm
I see that he doesn’t want Ward.Posted January 9, 2014 8:33 pm
@The Best!, I agree, at this stage of the game it is becoming obvious that he would be too much for those guys.Posted January 9, 2014 8:03 pm
Those are now easy wins for GGG.Posted January 9, 2014 7:43 pm
@Boxer, Lara couldn’t “school”Molina or martirosyan and you say he should “school” ggg ?Posted January 9, 2014 7:26 pm
“It wasn’t that long ago that boxers were ducking Martinez. now he is doing it to GGG.” – Yes. It was just 4 years ago, I remember when he was fighting on HBO undercards with no title. DiBella was ranting at the time about how the title holders were ducking him. Now, it’s DiBella and Martinez who are ducking GGG. I would say they’re hypocrites but then boxing is a not a sport of morality. Everyone serves their own best interests and Dibella knows GGG fighting Martinez does not serve their interests. The annoying thing is the haters try to ignore these facts and claim GGG isn’t fighting anyone. Like Martinez before him, you can’t hold a gun to their heads and make them fight.Posted January 9, 2014 5:52 pm
Eric- oh god, u trying 2 compare GGG resume 2 Floyds? Wow. This isnt about Floyd, go 2 that article about Arum/May and pac talk about him there.Posted January 9, 2014 5:38 pm
Cheezb- Geale vs Golovkin in Oz would b a far bigger money earner than the guy GGG is facing shortly….whats his name? Whats he done? Iv never heard of the guy.Posted January 9, 2014 5:35 pm
3G already said he wants Martinez long ago, 3G is doing his job and calling out the best unlike fake s like mayweather.Posted January 9, 2014 5:35 pm
Martinez has a few fights left @ best….y would he fight GGG 4 peanuts when he could fight Cotto, Alvarez, Floyd 4 millions? Call it ducking? Call it smart? Business? Alls I no is Sergio has earned the right 2 cash out b4 retirement….GGG hasnt as yet and hasnt fought any1 of note yet 2 make it worth Sergios time. GGG seems 2 have all the talent in the world? Who would no? I havent even heard of the guy hes fighting next. Time 4 GGG 2 prove himself.Posted January 9, 2014 5:33 pm
It wasn’t that long ago that boxers were ducking Martinez. now he is doing it to GGG.Posted January 9, 2014 4:40 pm
“These are the two fighters GGG should without a doubt be facing in 2014.Boxing is getting to the point you dont know who is doing the walking away and who really wants the fight.” – Yes and no. With every potential matchup that doesn’t happen the blame game begins but often we do actually know who’s doing the ducking. In the case of Martinez vs GGG, Lou Dibella stated publicly he would not put Martinez in with GGG. So that one is confirmed fact.Posted January 9, 2014 4:16 pm
GGG’s camp may want Martinez and Quilllin but the problem is they don’t want him. They will have no problem ducking him since they have other belts and the corrupt governing bodies don’t mandate their title holders face other titlists.Posted January 9, 2014 4:14 pm
Quillin will get ktfo by ggg and martinz won’t last 10 roundsPosted January 9, 2014 3:36 pm
Kid choco will be layed out by GGG. Sergio Martinez will be competitive.Posted January 9, 2014 2:15 pm
These are the two fighters GGG should without a doubt be facing in 2014.Boxing is getting to the point you dont know who is doing the walking away and who really wants the fight. But these guys should be facing each other or belts should be taken away!!!!!Posted January 9, 2014 1:58 pm
These are two very good fights for the division.Quillan and martinez are guys who just may giveGGG a run for it.Posted January 9, 2014 1:53 pm
Please call me when GGG actually fights somebody worth watching, all I hear is name dropping from him.Posted January 9, 2014 1:35 pm
I’d like to see Golovkin fight Korobov and Lemieux this year. Quillan, Geale, and Martinez can wait until 2015, when the prospect of huge televised gates make a match against him inevitable. If he stays at 160, Gennady can become one of the great middleweight champions.Posted January 9, 2014 1:20 pm
Abel Sanchez is becoming more and more like Angel Garcia and Guerro’s father. He’s pushing for a unification fight for GGG who may not be as good as people think. Yes, he’s winning but there are still people out there who would take him to school.Posted January 9, 2014 12:15 pm
I agree as of right now ggg is still in the broner stage ” minus the ignorance ofcourse” he hasn’t yet actually proved to much I’d like to see him fight kid chocolate is say lara but Lara might just school him and well I would t even mention him fighting andre wardPosted January 9, 2014 12:00 pm
Sanchez knows fully well that the promoters run the show, not the boxers, not the networks. That’s why you get the Amir Khan’s, the Bradley/Provodnikov/Guerrero. Teasers. Rarely the real deal. So why doesn’t Sanchez address his concerns towards the promoters? No balls!Posted January 9, 2014 11:40 am
Woop Woop must be from another planet as he seems poorly informed. Geale is the only fighter with balls enough to fight GGG. The rest are masters of excuses.Posted January 9, 2014 11:27 am
Golovkin-Geale and Golovkin-Sturm. They are also bouts to make. This level of opponents, along with Quillin and maybe Martinez, are the men Gennady should be looking to meet in 2014. It’s time now.Posted January 9, 2014 10:30 am
Quillin for GGG in 2014 , most definitely. That would be a good match for Gennady, he’s ready. It’s time for the better guys at 160lbs to box each other. If Sergio wants to meet Golovkin, I’m pretty sure that’ll happen too. If Sergio doesn’t want to box, he needs to vacate the belt.Posted January 9, 2014 10:22 am
@Ray Ray – “Maybe Geale wants HBO 4 exposure in the states? Cant blame him 4 that hes 32 yrs old”
I do agree that Geale has every right to want the HBO exposure. I do give him a bit of flack here and there (although that’s generally just to point out the hypocrisy of morons like Woop Woop) but I do honestly respect the guy and don’t believe he’s scared of Golovkin by any means.
If Rios had said to Pacquiao “No, I won’t fight you in Macau, but I’ll fight you in the US for your next bout!”, do you think anyone would have taken him seriously?
Geale is not a big money fight anywhere in the world. Mundine and Green are the only two fighters in Australia that can offer big money to international names, because both are capable of pulling crowds here on their own. Geale simply isn’t capable of that… the only time he’s ever done anything like “HBO money” in Australia was against Mundine (and obviously that was more due to most Aussies wanting to see Mundine lose).
You also have to remember that Geale is not “required”. Golovkin is getting more popular by the fight (and his purses are likely growing similarly), and if Martinez is true to his word, Golovkin-Martinez happens after Cotto-Martinez (assuming Martinez wins). Offering Geale the Monte Carlo fight was a big risk for Golovkin and was massive charity for Geale.
Make no mistake, I’d love it if Geale-Golovkin was announced as the April HBO fight. I just don’t think it’s likely given the annoying “business-side” of boxing and I think Geale is the one to blame in this scenario.Posted January 9, 2014 10:08 am
GGG said out of his own mouth that he wants to fight Chavez Jr. instead of Ward. But, of course, there’s is an excuse for GGG ducking top competition.Posted January 9, 2014 9:59 am
This BS will only end when there is one belt per weight class.Posted January 9, 2014 9:41 am
Bihesh Patel (zambian)
All this is about GG wanted Geale wants is nonsense from you kids
Find real jobs get off the internet and get a life
GGG is unproven, he is making more noise than he should, a lesser version of Broner.
Woop Woop, Abel Sanchez, GGG’s trainer, explained why Gennady wasn’t getting the fights he wanted on Joe Herron’s Tuesday night show. It has very much to do with both fighter and date availability. GGG has even consented to a 50-50 purse split with at least one fight just to get the fight made because no one else was available.
Then they have to find a date and time slot to televise the fight. GGG is an HBO fighter. GGG and Sanchez have asked for specific fights against known fighters but neither were available.
Sanchez is a no BS guy. He talks straight. He’s very knowledgable about all aspects of pro boxing from training to promoting to marketing, etc. Sanchez knows what’s going on. When a big fight becomes available, they’ll take it. But if you think GGG is ducking anyone, you’re wrong.Posted January 9, 2014 8:53 am
GGG has looked good against limited opponents, I would have to see him against better competition before I jump on board. He’s still at the Broner stage at this point, when Broner got in with a strong welted de didn’t look so good. GGG needs to get busy and create his following and not wait on Martinez and Quillin. GGG has to box those guy in by leaving them on options but him.Posted January 9, 2014 7:48 am
I have to say I don’t know how ggg is a p4p fighter I mean I like ggg humble guy really good strong fighter but he hasn’t done to much in the ring either as far as opposition goes Sergio that fought Chavez and before would of dominated ggg I’m a fan of kid chocolate that would be a much closer fightPosted January 9, 2014 7:34 am
Cheezb- Maybe Geale wants HBO 4 exposure in the states? Cant blame him 4 that hes 32 yrs old. Geale will fight GGG. Yeah he has no title ATM. Hes also the only guy out of GGG, Sergio and kid chocolate 2 unify. If GGG was 2 fight Geale in Daniels own back yard they would both make loads ofcash…..win, win 4 GGG? Cashes in and proves hes a true champ. Aussie dollar is high, there a sports mad country….have paid good cash 2 get Roy jones, Tarver and Mosley 2 go there….with time a Geale GGG fight would build in2 a massive event….both guys would make over a mil, mayb more? Just throwing that out there.Posted January 9, 2014 6:54 am
Woop – woop- = sredmond , lmao!! Why are you hiding under that nickname sred?Posted January 9, 2014 6:42 am
martinez-GGG or GGG-quillin . . . that would be nice for 2014.Posted January 9, 2014 6:37 am
@Woop Woop – “He has already turned down an April date with Geale”
Now Geale is coming off a loss and has no title, so sorry, but beggars can’t be choosers. If you get offered a shot in Monte Carlo, then take the freakin shot in Monte Carlo and make us all a little happier coz the fight would then be worth watching!
As for the April date, Geale hasn’t been turned down, he’s just apparently not the only option (and given the “it must be on HBO schtick” that Team Geale already pulled, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s pricing himself out of the fight).
And do you want to remind us who Geale is fighting now? It’s a world-beater, right? An A-level fighter, right? OOOOH WAIT! No, it’s Garth “running tackle” Wood!
Curtley-How r u? Agree 100% I 2 think GGG could well b the next big thing @ middleweight? He def needs 2 start showing how good he can be or is? Geale will b a good 1st up test 4 him. I dont think Sergio is ever fighting GGG. Sergio has mayb 2 fights left? He has more than earned the right 2 cash in.Posted January 9, 2014 6:33 am
People have even said Floyd is ducking GGG as you know I have often criticised FMJ but that is the biggest joke in boxing and like saying GGG is ducking Kovalev.Posted January 9, 2014 5:36 am
Ray Ray good morning sir, I fully agree all this ducking GGG is utter tripe. Martinez is undisputed MW champ a title he claimed when he beat Pavlik but everyone seems to anoint GGG as MW number 1 not because he has beaten anyone of note but because he has been impressive in his fights, but against who? I actually think that that GGG is probably the future of the division as he appears to be an exceptional hard punching fighting machine (reminds me very much of a bigger Kostya). However let us not forget how much trouble a smaller past it Ouma gave him before we claim he is invincible. As for Sergio if anyone deserves big money fights which Cotto brings (probably 3rd or 4th PPV fighter in the world) then its him, a guy that fought all over the world before he got his big break as he I coming towards the end of his career, Geale would fight GGG tomorrow, lets make that fight, no promotional issues and Daniel even as the champ has said he would take 50-50 purse.Posted January 9, 2014 5:33 am
How about fighting the guy thats called u out? Geale. Geale and Sergio have proved themselves, kid chocolate not so much. We dont no how good GGG is or can b? He should except the Geale fight thsn maybe take a shot @ Sergio. Martinez is neally done, hes earned the right 4 a big pay day against Cotto or Floyd 4 his retirement fund i dont think GGG has earned the right yet 2 b calling all the shots….Sergio and GGG have more talent than Geale and yet Geale is the only 1 2 unify? He has balls and even though he might not win he will always b there abouts and a good test. He will fight any1 any where.Posted January 9, 2014 4:25 am
Woop Woop, you are an idiot .. ..Posted January 9, 2014 4:14 am
More lies from team GGG. It is GGG who won’t get in the ring with a ‘real’ Middleweight. He has ducked champions and contenders who carry the weight to opt for Welters and Jnr Middles. He has already turned down an April date with Geale, who now needs to stay busy against home country opposition until GGG grows a set. GGG likes to name drop but never, ever backs up his talk. This guy has the biggest smoke and mirrors career on record. Absolute fraud that the suckers are all climbing aboard his hype train. He got wobbled twice by Curtis ‘no name’ Stevens and this is why he chooses little guys to fight. Chooooooo!!! Chooooooooo!!!Posted January 9, 2014 4:02 am
GG is a bigger name than Kid Choco bon bons …. A fight with Sergio would be an easy sell ( and draw fans ) than Cotto ………Posted January 9, 2014 2:52 am
The only way either Sergio or Kid Choco Bon Bons make more money is (a) fight Junior or (b) fight Canelo or (d) Cotto ………Posted January 9, 2014 2:50 am
