Congrats to Kovalev an absolute beast! @Jimmy & GANSTA couldn’t agree more with your comments. Cleverly is talented but has many flaws that need correcting. With the right trainer he could become a main player at LHW again.

He won’t retire, he’s a fighter I agree needs to use this.many fighters improve from defeat. He most definitely needs to pick the right kind of trainer, Freddie Roach is completely wrong for his style, Roach needs fighters with power to be successful and he doesn’t teach defence. Agree re Hunter or Naz no other candidates suitable come to mind for Cleverly.

Never been a huge fan of Cleverly but I could never deny that the kid is talented and has natural attributes. The problem is he doesn’t have power and fights like he does, stylistically he needs to fight the opposite way to how he does. He needs to understand how to take opponents strengths away. He should have turned Kovalev and frustrated him – used tricks to tie him up when in close etc. Kovalev fights at mid-range – Cleverly’s dad even said it pre-fight yet Cleverly didn’t stay just out of range and turn him to keep him off balance and only attack at the right times, crazily he held his feet. When you lack power like Cleverly then you have to be very good defensively and very smart in tactics. Currently,he is neither of these.

I’d hate to see him call it a day coz he’s only 26 and think he could still have a good career and certainly become a World Champion again, imo he’s still better than everyone at LHW except for Hopkins, Kovalev is beatable with the right tactics, but its the kind o fight that could get turned at anytime with one punch.

With the right trainer to teach him how to fight properly, smartly and not face first, get him to undertsand how to nulify oppoents like a Ward and Hopkins then he has the right kind of attributes to have success.

Tark is right – he has stance problems, throws shots when he shouldn’t and leaves himslef wisde open, at the moment doesn’t understand the concept of movement or defence or lateral upper body movement. Ward and Hopkins understand and use movement to perfection to keep their opponents of balance and nulify whatever strenthgs they have.

You have to fight according to your attributes and they do this, if Cleverly wants to be successful at the very top level he has to do this and undertstand it otherwise he might as well call it a day now.

He held his feet against a huge puncher and played right into his hands. He absolutely, tactics wise, gifted Kovalev with the easiest fight he could have, wins where Cleverly has gone toe to toe with Bellew, Murat and others have led Cleverly to believe he can do this with anyone at LHW.

Kovalev is a massive, massive puncher – get this right, Froch or anyone else at SMW or LHW gets destroyed by his power if they stand in front of him, it’s suicide.

Kovalev is good fighter and gentleman outside the ring but he’s very beatable with the right tactics. Stand in front of him is suicide and nobody at SMW or LHW will live with him.

Cleverly now needs to enjoy his break and life then move trainers and I’d suggest America – the way he needs to fight and learn he needs to move to a Virgil Hunter (unlikely) due to Ward or Naz Richardson (possible) given Hopkins retirement and the fact that Cleverl is inlikely to fight him now. They are the two of the smartest trainers out there and they would really educate Cleverly in how to use his attributes to his benefit and to take his oppoents away.

Cleverly needs to use this defeat and turn it into a positive – if you really learn and change for the better from defeat then it can be the best thing long-term to happen to him.

“Assamundo is on my butt about the Kovalev fight when he didn’t even have the knowledge or ability to make a pick in the Barker/Geale fight.”-NO. You NON reading SISSY. I didn’t have the INTEREST to make a pick in the Barker Fight. How many times DO I have to TELL you? LEAD Skull.

Posted August 20, 2013 7:06 am

“why does Cleverly “qualify” for this idiot’s consideration? All assamundo has had to say about Cleverly has been negative, so why even waste time making a call on that fight?”-Because Kovalev was Fighting you DIMWIT. Kovalev is a Fighter that GRABS my attention. Cleverly, Barker, and Geale do not. Froch should be KICKING himself right now. Taking Cleverly’s title would have been his opportunity to one UP Ward by becoming a TWO Division CHAMP. Now that feat is a lot tougher. No way can he beat Kovalev. That Cobra CHIN would get CRACKED…..And I’m a fan of you Froch but I still have to tell the TRUTH…..Your HANDS DOWN Defense vs. Kovalev will equal MAN DOWN.

“He claims Barker and Geale don’t qualify yet he made a prediction in the Martinez/Barker fight”-Of COURSE I DID. Because Martinez was Fighting. He’s an ELITE Fighter. Barker says that I am CORRECT on that.

Posted August 20, 2013 6:56 am

“LMAO! That’s just Assamundo’s way of attempting to hide the fact that he really doesn’t follow boxing that closely.”-Nope. Thats CORRECTAMUNDO successfully being open about the FACT that he doesn’t follow Fighters with NON elite talent.

Posted August 20, 2013 6:54 am

Cheery picker.

CORRECTAMUNDO is a fan boy, Bandwagon jumper, he probably doesn’t know much about anything before Mayweather v ODLH, he can’t remember watching or following boxing before that, like I remember that fight, explaining it etc, when Mayweather loses he will lose interest.

Posted August 19, 2013 9:07 pm

Tark, it doesn’t matter whether the Geale/Barker fight was 50/50. Assamundo chose to bicker with me about the Cleverly/Kovalev fight but he couldn’t even make a prediction on the Geale/Barker fight. I picked Barker to win and he did. It wasn’t about how the fight might have turned out and it’s not about the odds. I picked Barker to beat Geale and he did. Assamundo is on my butt about the Kovalev fight when he didn’t even have the knowledge or ability to make a pick in the Barker/Geale fight.

But to say it wasn’t an important fight is just not right. Or fair. It was for the IBF middleweight championship. There are only five major sanctioning bodies: WBC, WBA, IBF, Ring, and WBO. How could the Geale/Barker fight not be an important fight? Now Barker is in a position to challenge Quillin and Murray at the least. He might be in a position for a rematch with Martinez. And tell you what, it wouldn’t hurt Golovkin to fight him. There’s not one superchampion in the middleweight division. Martinez holds two belts, Quillin one, Barker one, GGG one, and Murray holds the WBA Interim belt. Title-wise, Barker is now on par with three of the other four beltholders in that division.

T22-I’m a TRUE Boxing fan but I’m only interested in ELITE Fighters or guys that have or HAD the potential to BE… Amateur and PRO. ….Sorry IF you can’t handle me being SO Frank but Barker and Geale don’t qualify.

Posted August 19, 2013 7:37 pm

Great nite of fights, all of them were awesome fights

Posted August 19, 2013 6:54 pm

Correctemundo you are not a true boxing fan. All boxers at whatever level are relevant to a true fan. Amateur and pro.

Posted August 19, 2013 6:41 pm

Man……I was under the impression from the UK fans Cleverly was the next coming of a prime RJJ! More like a shot Clinton Woods.

Posted August 19, 2013 5:15 pm

Calzaghe was meant to be irrelevant.

Posted August 19, 2013 5:08 pm

Correctamundo, you are irrelevant, Barker and Geale are relevant.

Posted August 19, 2013 5:05 pm

Barker vs Geale contained no relevant Fighters and thats why I didn’t waste my gifts on it. Let the WINNER face a relevant guy and I’ll make a pick and most likely be CORRECT yet again.

Hidalgo…, The Barker-Geale fight was 50/50… A coin toss… It was not an important fight and neither boxer is even as good as Cleverly. Geale did more damage and landed the better punches in an even fight. I had Geale winning 114-113.

Is Barker going to fight GGG??? GTFOOH.

Kovalev was a dead solid lock to beat Cleverly, and it was an important fight … you have Stevenson, Rodriguez, Hopkins, and Kovalev at the top of 175, and some interesting fights are looming.

Posted August 19, 2013 3:15 pm

“The way you picked him you should order you another half a brain.”

As I said earlier Assamundo, I also picked Barker to beat Geale and he did. YOU didn’t even make a choice on that fight.

Clev will be back from this and come back a better fighter but needs some time off first ..

Posted August 19, 2013 8:52 am

cheers mate al check that out, do you reckon he should?

Posted August 19, 2013 8:24 am

OIP where did you hear that sir?

Posted August 19, 2013 8:14 am

As Cleverly is now talking about retiring at 26 years of age….. i think that says it all about his heart and determination…. gifted a world title and protected for the most part of his career. one set back and he contemplating retiring from the sport as a LW @ 26y old. Good bye then Clev.

Posted August 19, 2013 6:25 am

Junior right on sir, if the idiots think Clev is crap then the Kovalev win isnt that good and he’s is still untested.

Posted August 19, 2013 3:30 am

Posted August 19, 2013 12:21 am

Cleverly doesn’t appear to be anything near world class. However, at 26 he may improve, but I’m not sure if it’s enough to reach the highest levels. I think one of Cleverly’s issues is that he never gave Kovalev anything to think about. Kovalev has backed off from other fighters at times when he was hit hard enough. Cleverly couldn’t do that at any time. However, if he still wants to learn, he’s young enough and may improve. He’ll definitely need a new trainer. Barker did a nice job last night…getting up from a liver shot is rare… however, he’s going to have a rough time if he fights Golovkin.

The way you picked him you should order you another half a brain.

Mick the Marmalizer

Nathan Cleverly’s main problem in his career has always been his management & we all know who that involves. He should have been fighting in the USA years ago & gaining the experience & exposure that a top level Boxer requires. WBA titlist Beibut Shumenov offered team Clev a 50% purse split on neutral ground(USA) but a certain person wouldn’t risk his golden goose getting exposed which he obviously has now. I also remember the said manager/promoter claiming he would retire from the noble art if David Haye were to beat Enzo Maccarinelli. Unfortunatlly he was not a man of his word!!.

Posted August 18, 2013 6:51 pm

all the talking the cleverlys do they sure are quiet now. will miss vince and his sunglasses gloating about their win in post fight pressers

Posted August 18, 2013 3:49 pm

What?!?….. Cleverly was far from the worst LHW Champ ever and you know it. Hes a world class fighter who ran into an absolute monster last night. By trashing cleverly, your down-grading Kovalevs win as “kovalev beat a nobody”

Posted August 18, 2013 3:43 pm

Gutted for Nathan, i underestimated Kovalev big time. I get this feeling Cleverly will be damaged mentally from this defeat. He wont be the same again. Cleverly vs Enzo Mac would be a good fight

Posted August 18, 2013 3:40 pm

Cleverly isn’t finished. He never got started. He was the worst ever LHW title holder and it showed when confronted with a real challenge. Anyone but those blinded by delusions of patriotism knew he was going down and out. It was an embarrassing performance and there were a few personal attackers eating humble pie yesterday. Who’s next for Kovalev? Doesn’t matter he sweeps them all aside.

Posted August 18, 2013 3:31 pm

mr gav

I had a bad feeling before the clev fight I can say I’m really gutted for him but it was coming

Posted August 18, 2013 1:59 pm

Barker vs Murray winner gets GGG.I thought Clev. would use his ring skills to cruise to a UD.But the big punches was to big for Clev. to handle, and Clev. has a good chin, big power indeed!

Can Clev come again? that’s a great question, for someone who set out to be the best in his division his confidence will be damaged, hey you never know he might have a few comeback fights then try for a rematch or he might say stuff it and be a maths teacher, who knows yet.
