The reason they are asking for him to weigh 147 is so that he’s no larger than 160 on fight night. Love Canelo but he’s humongous on fight nights. Mayweather taking him on at 154 is hard enough, but if he weighs in at 170 then they’ll be fighting 3 weight classes apart. Maybe they should make the terms with an additional fight night weigh in to ensure that Canelo doesn’t become a giant like Chavez Jr. does.Posted May 18, 2013 8:42 am

I like the way folks say it isn’t fair to Canelo to go to 147 even though he called out Floyd but it is completely fair for Floyd to go to 154 where he can barely make 154 and then come in lighter on fight night. hmmmmmm.Posted May 17, 2013 11:32 pm

“Put a clause into the contract restricting the number of pounds that Canelo can rehydrate. ” Makes no sense Tark. Might as well have Canelo fight at 147 rather than at 154 with a 160 rehydration limit. Canelo would be giving up 12 lbs of the weight he naturally rehydrates to. He only has to lose 147 to get to 154. I think both wieght requirements would be too hard for Canelo to make, and both would be drastically unfair to Alvarez and overwhelmingly in Mayweather’s favor. If I were a trainer, I wouldn’t ask my fighter to make those kinds of sacrifices, in fact, I would discourage him from doing so.Posted May 17, 2013 6:28 pm
Canelo should go to 147 since he is the one calling out Floyd. Floyd never called out Canelo. Canelo is a big 154lb and Floyd is a 147lb. Floyd never said Canelos name. If he did then yes he should be the one moving up. Besides all that I think the fight comes off next year. Showtime has already said they think it will happen and Floyd had signed that contract and I bet somewhere in there it says he fights CaneloPosted May 17, 2013 6:25 pm
Floyd will duck Canelo forget about this 147 nonsense which Shaeffer says is BS. You nut hugging Floyd fans will just have to accept the fact he’s a cherry picking ducker. Or, cling to the notion it’s Canelo who won’t drop to 147. Also pull up your Underoos and keep a stiff lip.Posted May 17, 2013 6:12 pm

There’s no reason for Mayweather to fight at 154, when he’s the established fighter. If he loses a few fights, and Canelo keeps winning, things will be different. At this point, if any fighter in the sport wants a fight, they’ll have to submit to Mayweathers demands. It may not be fair but that’s how it is in boxing, and that’s how it’ll remain, no matter what fans say. Besides the majority of the fans that are upset, aren’t fans of Mayweather anyway.Posted May 17, 2013 6:00 pm

*oscar started this business style of boxing and thats when him and bernard did their thing and became business partners in the ring with a weak fight if you want to call it one. mayweather has continued a model layed out by oscar. its terrible for the fan. in fact a ufc type model and one title and FORCING the fighters to fight and giving them little say could be potentially way better for the fans. you also have a lot less controversy in judging which must be because of the stakes multiple individual parties have in individual bouts. boxing is rife with problems. if you ask me the “oscar model” contributes to those problems. all the sanctioning bodies as well its totally and utterly ridiculus. as i said im a fan of boxing. you know the sport. i could care less how much mayweatherhe makes. he has made enough to live well for the rest of his life years ago. unless he’s a dumb animal and mis-manages his finances. and any individual who does that be it a boxer or not is just a dummy. sure i wanna see people turn a dollar but not to the detriment of the sport of boxing. and really its the responsibility of the fan to be cognizant of this and speak up and speak out about itPosted May 17, 2013 1:08 pm

Smith writes….,”I have no doubts that Canelo would make it down to 147 to make the fight happen, but I do think he’d easily make back up to 170 so he can enjoy a 26 pound weight advantage over Mayweather.”
That makes a ton of sense… Just lose 26 pounds to make 147. Then magically put all that weight back on in one day—so you not only weigh 173 but are fit, strong, fast, and energetic enough to go 12 rounds with the world’s best fighter—and whip his ass while enjoying a 26-pound weight advantage.
So easy… Why haven’t more boxers stumbled onto this genius idea?Posted May 17, 2013 11:46 am

People don’t realize Guerrero fought his 3rd straight fight @147 and was 2-0 going into the Floyd fight. So though he did move up in weight, he found a comfort zone in weight. Ghost didn’t say he was going back down to 140 after rhe the Mayweather loss did he? Its obvious Floyd fights most comfortable @147.If Cotto was coming in fight night @172 or 175, I doubt Floyd would give him the fight.Everyone calls Floyd a coward but why doesn’t Canelo fight Ward@168 or Froch, Quillen, Maravilla or JCCjr? Does that make him a coward too? Those would all make more sense from a size standpoint.Make no mistake about it, I still think Canelo is good but still green and Floyd’s experience&speed would win out over size&youth in Canelo but I don’t blame Floyd for making weight stipulations. He has to do it when Oscar DelaHoya held all the leverage in his heyday.Posted May 17, 2013 11:39 am

Floyd never came in @6lbs overweight on weigh in .He came in 2lbs over @146 for a limit of 144.He paid JMM $600k for it.Look it up.Its a big difference between weighing in 2 lbs over and rehydration to 146 to 150 than for a guy like Canelo to weigh in @150 or 154 only to fight @170+lbs on fight night. Why should Floyd take unecessary risk? Hes the ppv king, the highest paid athlete &like it or not, boxing’s biggest draw because he is so polarizing.Just as many ppl come to see him lose as do those to see him win. People who hate Floyd want him to lose at ANY cost or he’s a coward.Posted May 17, 2013 11:23 am

@Curtley. You write…, “Duran, was about the same size as FMJ or even smaller yet he had the stones to fight and beat Barkley, who is bigger than Canelo and even to fight Hagler.”
First off…Blade and Hag weren’t particularly fast. Their skills weren’t as good as Duran’s. Duran lost to Kirkland Laing, Robbie Sims, Wilfred Benitez, Ray Leonard, and other craftier slicker boxers. Duran padded his record with guys like Alvaro Rojas Doc McClendon, Jose Peterson, Benny Huertas, and dozens of guys Floyd would never hire as sparring partners. Although Duran was an ATG, if you watched him in any given fight above lightweight—such as his Laing or Sims fights—he could resemble a disinterested 6-round fighter at times.
Floyd can’t afford that kind of attitude or those losses. If he fights one half-assed or sloppy fight his carefully crafted GOAT legacy could go up in smoke.
And Duran wasn’t smaller. Floyd is more slender than Duran. Floyd fought most of his career fights at 130 … And Canelo is a burly kid—more strapping than Hagler. Any truly observant person sees these things.Posted May 17, 2013 11:07 am

And what some don’t realize is that Canelo beat Trout who beat Cotto, a future HOF’er. Not exactly a nobody. On the other hand, who is guerrero and ortiz next to Canelo??? Nobdies who floyd had the audacity to fight and then wants the paying fans to believe he is a great fighter by fighting nobody’s and has beens. Canelo/ floyd can be made. If DLH/floyd fought for that title time back, they can do it again against Canelo. For what it’s worth, it may not make sense for Canelo to take the fight due to when he wins, everyone and their mother will say Canelo was too big, too young and too strong and that Floyd was past his prime. But hey, I wouldn’t dispute that just as I wouldn’t dispute DLH, Mosely and Cotto were past their prime when floyd fought them also.Posted May 17, 2013 10:13 am
Exactly. When Mayweather wanted the crown, he had to bow down to Delahoya in everyway. He took like 10-20% of the pot and had to fight at 154.
But now that he is wears the crown, hes supposed to give everyone a break? WTF/SMH!/LOL!Posted May 17, 2013 9:58 am

What Canelo doesn’t realize is that 1. He’s still a nobody in Boxing.. only really known to his Mexican Fans… 2. Floyd is incredibly Wealthy and has made more money in one year than all Mexican fighters combined over the past decade. 3. It’s more important to Floyd to retire unbeaten then to take a chance with a cheater who balloons up in weight like Canelo coming into his fights as a light Heavy weighing well over 172+lbs.. 4. Floyd can easily make his next 5 fights and never even look at Canelo and still make a few more hundred Million 5. Canelo will have a tough task taking on the guys his true size and weight like Quinlin, Rosado, Martinez, Love, GGG…Posted May 17, 2013 8:16 am
If we look at a fighter like Duran, he was about the same size as FMJ or even smaller yet he had the stones to fight and beat Barkley who is much bigger than Canelo and even to fight Hagler. Can you imagine FMJ taking on these fighters? This is what separates the great like Floyd from the all time greats like Roberto.Posted May 17, 2013 7:58 am

Tark the difference is all the smaller fighters called out the bigger fighters. Canelo is calling out Floyd so its only right he come down some to at least 149 for the weigh in. If he really wants the fight prove it. by the way love floyds skills but screw him as a personPosted May 17, 2013 3:05 am
Its the “politics” of boxing for these days the fight will be made think of the weight issue as bargaining point in the negotiations before any formal negotiations are made LOOK at what is being done a BUZZ is created amongst the FANS TALK and more TALK to create the BUZZ for ticket sales …Posted May 17, 2013 2:50 am
Canelo is a much bigger guy. A fighter weighing over 170 against a guy that’s less than 150? I don’t see how that is fair, but it breaks no rules. I think same day weigh ins ae the answer. Rehydration should become a thing of the past and fighters should fight in an appropriate weight class.Posted May 17, 2013 2:21 am
The first time Ray Robinson fought for the middleweight title he weighed 152.. Duran weighed 142 when he fought Leonard the first time.. Haye weighed 217 when he fought 330 pound Valuev.. Kubrat Pulev gave up 56 pounds to undefeated Alexander Ustinov.. Eddie Chambers gave up 48 pounds to undefeated Alexander Dimitrenko.. Floyd weighed into ring at 148 when he fought DLH, who was probably 170 or more.
What did the six (6) above lighter fighters above have in common??? They all WON!!! … It’s not a BIG DEAL!!!
Floyd is a 2-Time World Champion at 154… Floyd has beaten two (2) ATG fighters at 154. He’s a proven World Champion Boxer at 154. Let’s stop all this silliness because everybody knows the fight’s going to be done at 154. Put a clause into the contract restricting the number of pounds that Canelo can rehydrate. Make him train down to middleweight—that’s 160—as the most he’ll be allowed to rehydrate to. That will force him to grind down 12 pounds from his usual weight. It will be murder on the growing kid. He’ll still have a 10 pound weight advantage—but Floyd will be the fresher and more energetic fighter if he limits Canelo’s 24-hour rehydration regimen.
Floyd was asked why he was meeting Cotto at 154 pounds., “I like my opponents to feel comfortable. I like them fighting at their best weight.” How’s that again Your Honor?”Posted May 17, 2013 2:16 am
Hmmm, I guess all of Tommy Hearns’ opponents should have demanded that he squat for a fight because he was so much taller than most of his opponents.Posted May 17, 2013 1:36 am
I can’t see how anyone supports the weight differential; it’s clearly cheating. How do you figure? If Canelo does not exceed the required weigh-in weight of 154 pounds, how is he cheating? Again I remind everyone that in a “lightweight fight” on the night of the fight, both Broner and Rees who weighed in around 135 lbs,, stepped into the ring at 150 lbs or more. That’s a 15 pound weight gain. Did they “cheat” too?Posted May 17, 2013 1:33 am
“I can’t see how anyone supports the weight differential; it’s clearly cheating. ” Huh? What is this, idiot’s night at ESB? If Canelo weighs in at 154 exactly what cheating has he done? If he rehydrates to 170 lbs or more, what cheating has he done? None.Posted May 17, 2013 1:31 am
“He had a 6 lbs advantage over marques. 150 to 144. Not enough to make a difference. ” How would you know? Besides, Marquez jumped up two weight divisions for that fight. It’s not like Marquez wasn’t already at a disadvantage before Floyd cheated on his weight.Posted May 17, 2013 1:29 am

Yes, Austin Trout really beat Canalo that night. The Texas judges gifted him that decision. The streets are talking and the streets saw what happened. The thing is If Canelo fights Floyd next and loses, his stock is going to go way down. Heck, if he loses his next fight period, his career will suffer. However, if Austin wins his next fight, his stock is going to go way up.Posted May 17, 2013 12:44 am
