The so called HOFers Ali beat were not very good when he faced them.. Frazier was destroyed by the only big tall puncher he ever faced… Foreman was boxed to death by the super weak hitting Jimmy Young… Archie Moore was 52 years old who fought his first 50 pro fights as a Welterweight.. Jimmy Ellis fought most of his career fights as a middleweight… Liston lost due to an injured biceps in the first fight when the cards were dead even… In the second fight he was robbed because Ali refused to go to a neutral corner and Liston got no count from the referee… The referee was busy trying to get Ali to a neutral corner and Ali repeatedly rejected the referee’s orders… The commission agreed that the count should have been suspended and Liston should have been given a count after Ali finally went to a neutral corner — but they refused to change Joe Walcott’s messed up decision… Ali should have been DQ’d.. Larry Holmes is the only boxer Ali ever faced who was a natural full sized heavyweight who could box very well and punch a little bit as well.. Holmes beat Ali every minute of every round.. Patterson was a little guy who weighed less than 200 pounds and had a severly injured back when he fought Ali.. Patterson had 8 losses in his career and there’s 30 heavyweights who could beat him today… That’s it for the HOFers. Some list.Posted May 7, 2013 3:45 am

To ALL you Fish Eyed trolls out there ; Wlad just got his 52nd K.O , by dispatching an UNDEFEATED , YOUNG , TALL ( 6′ 5″ ) in the sixth round !
At this age Ali had defeated something like 7 HOFers, was a legend and had 20x make that 56x the epic fights Klits had unless you think his serial TKO losses in his prime were great nights? Wlad KOed a guy he had already been working over in sparring SHAMEFUL after the several weak defenses he’s made as of late Mormeck, Wach, Thompson now this nobody who was on his staff… At this age Ali had NEVER been stopped meanwhile Wlad was stopped 3X ins his prime by an out of shape greens keeper/caddy and a certified bum who came close to losing 50% of his bouts… Best guy that stopped him was a B- fighter… Ali’s name comes up because Pianetas NEVER WILL…Posted May 4, 2013 7:38 pm

True Wlad is taking on a lesser fighter, but at this weight one wild swing at an unprotected chin can make history. This fight will be more competative and more value for money than Holmes/Frazier, Lewis/Golota and Foreman/Roman fights. Peaneta is a better pure boxer than Corrie Sanders… He has a very similar southpaw stance. His height, weight, and reach are very similar.. He’s in far better physical condition, and doesn’t play golf. Physically he’s a lot stronger than the soft Sanders.
The odds are about the same as for the Sanders fight.

Wlad will make 10 million… He doesn’t need PPV in America, where Boxing gets almost no press for international fights, for this very minor, uncompetitive fight. The fight is being televised in America and he gets a nice piece of that. Viewers won’t be charged PPV for the Mayweather fight in many parts of the world.
Ali’s fights with Shavers, Lyle, Evangelista, Coopman, Dunn, Spinks etc. appeared on free television… The Klitschkos have both fought PPV fights, and those are the bigger fights… I’m sure when Wladimir comes to the US to fight Jennings and Wilder, those will be PPV. I’m sure a fight with Fury would be PPV in England and Europe … maybe even here.Posted May 4, 2013 12:07 pm

Beer is allowed at the venues but no trouble at all. One amazing culture shock I saw was cafe’s on a monday morning seeing someone have a half pint before going to the office. Look I was absolutely behind Vitaly, in the fight against Lewis, he started fantasticly, but even a Vitaly fan could see that Lewis was coming back with hardcore punches, and would have won the fight anyways.
This was an old Lennox Lewis, who had been talking retirement for some time, then. A prime Lewis, would be too much of a deal, for Vitaly.

Lewis’s CV is clearly superior.Posted May 4, 2013 2:42 am
That’s true… Lewis wanted to use the title for another big payday or two.. When he found out he would have to face the rath of Vitali — he gave Vitali the title without a fight.. Nobody could even get ahead of Vitali by a round in any of his 47 fights, and he was never knocked down.. It was obvious who the best heavyweight was.. Kirk Johnson, never stopped before, went in 2.. Sanders got trashed and was pretty much finished as a fighter after the savage beating he took.
Peter gave Wladimir Hell… Vitali controlled him every second and stopped him very easily… Sanders and Puritty stopped Wladimir, Vitali put them away… There really wasn’t a question about the best heavyweight after Vitali came back from 4 years off, and with no tune-up fights, at 37, took the Heavyweight Title first time out, easy as pie.Posted May 4, 2013 2:02 am
People’s thoughts change all the time, the onus was not on Lennox to give a rematch. Sometimes you only get one shot at the title and that’s it. It is what it is. The fact that he beat a young hungry lion in his prime makes it an even better accomplishment. I respect Lewis for being one of the few guys that retired and ‘really’ retired. There are too many fighters go on for too long (Ali, Tyson, Roy Jones, Holyfield, Holmes, etc) he was one of the few to retire on top. It’s a great accomplishment.Posted May 4, 2013 1:54 am
Lennox was talking about ageing like fine wine and fightng on after vitaly. In fact lennox was trying to fight anyone not named klitschko and didn’t retire until the wbc forced the vitaly rematch or lennox was getting stripped. Lennox retired. Vitaly retired the standing champ cause that’s how intimidating vitaly isPosted May 4, 2013 1:38 am

There had been no talk of Lewis retiring… Right after the fight he told Larry Merchant he would do the rematch… He said during interviews that he would “fck up the other side of Vitali’s face”
Lewis certainly talked bravely about fighting Vitali again… And it’s no rewritting of history to say Lewis cheated with impunity or that Vitali was ahead on ALL scorecards..
Lewis could have made more money than for any other fight… The fight would have been the biggest in Boxing History. But Lewis knew Vitali had an iron chin, outpointed him, and almost knocked him out.
So after months of equivication, he announced his retirement…Posted May 3, 2013 10:22 pm

And I would of liked to see it after Lewis had a proper training camp but Lewis retired because he didn’t have it anymore. So what, people retire all the time. We are always asking fighters to retire when they get to old and when one does we say he is running from another fighter or he is scared. Can’t have it both ways. I would much rather him retire than not to be able to give it his all.Posted May 3, 2013 9:49 pm
Klitschko by KO early!!!Posted May 3, 2013 9:21 pm
Right… When Vitali fought Lewis he HADN”T been training for a World Championship Fight, and Lewis HAD been training a World Championship Fight for months.
The 2nd thing is Vitali was leading on ALL scorecards when the fight was called.
The 3rd thing is Lewis fouled Vitali with impunity.. The cuts were slashed open with the palm and heel of Lewis’s right glove when he had Vitali in a headlock.. Lewis took such desperate measures in the 3rd round — because he lost the 1st two rounds and was almost knocked out in the 2nd.
The 4th thing is, with any other referee but Lou Moret the fight would have gone to the scorecards — because according to the rules you tally the scores if headbutts or illegal blows and tactics opened up the wounds that cause a stoppage.
The 5th thing is, the fans understood that Lewis was cheating and that Vitali should be the winner… They loudly booed Lewis and cheered Vitali, who was winning the fight at the time of stoppage.Posted May 3, 2013 9:07 pm
Should be a good one.Posted May 3, 2013 8:56 pm

Peej, you make it sound like Vitali had some kind of advantage going into the fight with Lewis. Lennox was the number one heavyweight in the world training to defend his title. Vitali was thrown in with this this great champion with only two weeks notice. I along with a lot of other fans would have loved to see how the fight would have went if Klitschko had a proper training camp to challenge for that title.Posted May 3, 2013 8:30 pm
Sure Wladimir suffered upset losses… So what??? Many World Champions suffered upsets in the 90’s—examples: Lewis-McCall…. Tyson-Douglas… Bowe-Mathis… Foreman-Morrison… Morrison-Bentt… Holyfield-Moorer… Moorer-Foreman… and Holyfield-Tyson… Now Holyfield-Tyson wasn’t an upset in my opinion—but it sure was in the opinion of all the experts and the betting public—who loved Mike despite the fact that Holyfield flattened Douglas—who trounced Tyson… Sometimes fans are irrational.
However—Vitali Klitschko went 27-0 in the 90’s… Don’t say, “If Vitali was around in the 1990’s.” He’s 41 years old. Of course he was around.
Vitali won a World Championship by smashing Herbie Hide out in 2 round… Hide easily destroyed the ridiculous Michael Bentt… Bentt crushed China-chinned Tommy Morrison in the 1st round… Morrison whipped George Foreman… Foreman KO’d MIchael Moorer… Moorer beat Holyfield… Holyfield KO’d Tyson… Tyson bombed out Larry Holmes… Holmes made a pathetic punch bag out of Muhammad Ali back in 1980.
So you see Vitali Klitschko is on the top of that food chain. VK knocked out 27 fighters in 27 fights in the 90’s and is still Heavyweight Champion in 2013 at the age of 41. His next opponent is a tough Canadian named Stiverne Bermane, who is 22-1-1 … and just brutalized Chris Arreola.Posted May 3, 2013 8:22 pm
We have no one remotely close to Wladimar and for that reason everyone is critical of them and live in the past. Lewis did not run from Vitali. He beat Vitali and then retired. That’s not running that is retirement. If you don’t have it anymore then your done. And let’s not forget Lewis was out of shape and was training for Johnson not Vitali whom stepped in on 2 weeks notice.Posted May 3, 2013 7:33 pm
Of course the anti-Klitschko brigade will come roaring in and dig up losses that happened a decade ago. News to the brigade- THAT Wlad who suffered those setbacks was a completely different animal to the one we are presently witnessing. Sure you would tip Lewis over THAT version of Wlad (but still not with a huge degree of confidence with his punching power, accracy and hand speed), but THIS version of Wlad? No way for mePosted May 3, 2013 7:26 pm
Well said K2. I respect Lewis as a fighter but the man clearly ran from the logical rematch with Vitali. I believe it was even ordered by the WBC. For me I’d tip this present form of Wlad, with his unreal focus and concentration, as well as all his physical gifts and skill over ANY heavyweight in history-including his brother. I reckon Wlad would have actually blown Lewis away in short order since the two times Lewis got nailed, he didn’t get back up. Wlad at least ALWAYS gets back up. Any punches far harder than ANYONE Lewis ever facedPosted May 3, 2013 7:22 pm
What do you want the Klitchkos to do? They fight whomever is put in front of them. If there’s no real competition, what do you expect? They fight whomever will fight them. @MK. Wlad would have no problem with either Tyson or Holyfield. Tyson would have been too small and he always had problems with taller fighters. He had never fought anyone close to Wlad’s size. Wlad would jab and grab till Tyson would be worn out and then get KO’d. Holyfield IMO was overated as a HW. Lewis I think could have beaten Wlad because the were very similar in size and I think Lewis had a bigger heart.Posted May 3, 2013 5:42 pm

With a HW division consisting of Tyson, Lewis, Holyfield, and other hardcore boxers, that period was clearly superior to present time.
I would go so far as to say that there is no world class HW, at this time. WK, Haye and Fury are either green or B class boxers.
Vitaly was great once, but you can’t expect a guy that old, to be world class.
You can’t grow a stronger chin, ask Khan, WK is lucky to be in a historical poor HW period. Tyson, before jail would eat him, Lewis would also Ko him, and Holyfield would headbut him until stoppage.
If the case is that WK is helping another boxer, economically, as mentioned in the earlier thread, I would say -cool of WK.Posted May 3, 2013 2:52 pm
