I don’t see any opponents Ali ever beat who were tough for a 6’3″ X 210 good boxer to beat, with the exception of Ken Norton.. But I had Norton winning each of their fights. Norton’s cross-armed defense had tons of holes in it. Four big puncher KO’d Norton — and I believe Ron Lyle would have flattened him as well. Norton did well because Ali lacked power.

Jimmy Young was a good boxer but I also had Young beating Ali.. You could put pressure on Young and I believe Mike Tyson would have blitzed Jimmy even faster than he KO’d Michael Spinks.. Cooney applied pressure and used his height and reach to pound Young as he pleased—because Young was a very soft puncher. Young was only 32 if you’re trying to tell me he was old for that fight. He had a lot of losses due to his power deficit.

Frazier was a good left hooker but he was very small, short, and a wide open target for any big, tall, powerful guy who could throw an uppercut, lefthook, or overhand right — and was even as skilled as George Foreman — which was not very skilled. Frazier already had medical issues when he faced Ali in MSG.. He had an enlarged heart and very high blood pressure so he was already on the slide. Frazier avoided Lyle, Mac Foster, Shavers, and Blue Lewis. Of course his train was running slow by that time anyway, as the 2nd Foreman fight showed.. But after watching the Lyle fight he was convince he could outbox George.. “I saw all I need to see. George can’t box.”

Foreman was a very good puncher but he had no finesse at all up to age 30…and that’s why 211 pound Young whipped him. George couldn’t defend or even clinch effectively, so it was a miracle Ron Lyle didn’t knock him out.. George was rocking and teetering on the edge of getting iced but he kept throwing big punches.. If Lyle was a better boxer he would have put the final touches on George, but even little Jerry Quarry was able to finesse Lyle.

Liston could have beaten Ali but suffered a very badly torn left biceps in their 1st fight—which the commission didn’t believe Liston and brought in seven (7) doctors to examine the torn biceps.. They all testefied the injury was severe.. The fight was dead even when Liston was forced to quit because of the injury after being trounced in the 6th because the arm was useless. The rematch an outrage. Referee Walcott never gave Liston a count, and the count wasn’t suspended when Ali refused to go to a neutral corner, like it should have been.. Liston proved he was unhurt by getting up and resuming the fight — easily ducking all of Ali’s follow up punches before Ring Magazine Editor Nat Fleischer ordered Walcott to stop the fight.. Obviously Fleischer had no authority to do a damned thing, but Walcott said, “Fleischer said to stop it” and the sucker did.

Blame the world all you want this was a LAME opponent who’s ONLY credential in the sport is that he helped Klits get ready to knockout other lame opponents.. The only thing that can be said after this SUPER predictable result is that Wlad has been contributing to his sparring partners retirement funds as of late Thompson and Pianeta… This is impossible to hype!

most of the haters are brits or americans that are jealous because they have nothing that can compare to the great k-2. never did either.

Big Jake

Got to agree with Tark, Vitaly is the favorite in any fight ever made. The only L’s on his record were not because he was losing the fight, and by the way if you ever had a rotar cuff injury, it’s near impossible to lift your arm.

Posted May 4, 2013 1:07 pm

Haye won 2 rounds off of Wladimir… Who else won more than one round off of Wladimir in the last 6 or 7 years??? Wladimir is pretty damned tough right now.

Posted May 4, 2013 12:42 pm

Ali never got knocked out is true but look at him now. Could it be that he took one too many hits on the old noggin? Bad defense has a way of coming back at you.

the facts guy

As of Larry’s departure it is HBO Latino for me. I don’t need to see and hear Kellerman swinging from the nuts of fighters. He is garbage.

Posted May 4, 2013 7:29 am

But hbo hasn’t taken care of larry the way they should if u ask me. Often we ont even see larry. Epix is awesome now with rafael, roach and others they have on like sugar ray and lou dibella. Will be watching wlad on epix in a few hours actually

Ah yes the mean little minds that are so in a dither when we once again have to view their complaints or better whines on K-2’s winning ways. One look at the photo tells you part of the reason why the Klitschkos are not to be dispossessed of their titles and or belts. The “Hood” is not producing the desired results and the Mexicans are too small. What to do? The sad sack Ali obsessed have only one strategy to their name and it’s mainly composed of whining, denouncing and venting of hate. The Klitschkos can live with the envy and disdain and the K-2 fans have grown accustomed to the envy and vitriol. Life goes on just like the success of K-2.

I’m american. To me larry is the goat announcer. Makes the poignant statements and asks the tough questions and keeps even the biggest time fighters honest. Larry is priceless. Invalueable. Just like he did with lennox following the vitaly bout. Just like he did with mayweather. Fans should love larry. We sont need a nuthugger doing interviews cared of offending someon by asking tough questions or making points that a fighter may not like. Merchant is the ultimate fan/announcer. And he can call whoever a coward if he wants. As a fan, as fans, we all can. Fans keep the sport alive. Not some single fighter. U can’t be afraid to step on toes. The showtime crew is. Kellerman and lampley are. Merchant is not. Its priceless. Its greatness. Larrys a hof announcer/analysts and in my view better than even cossell

Posted May 4, 2013 5:37 am

Yes but the devil is in the details on these stoppages and boxing facts for example ali got floored by 180 pound bert cooper and his team had to resor to cheating to pull through. This is well known. Moreover, wlad had not peaked in his losses. If we look at tape of current wlad as opposed to purritty, sanders, and brewster are we seriously going to attempt to submit that on tape wlad doesn’t look like a totally different fighter now?. Measured, accurate, best jab, best one two, awesome footwork (as seen in tandem with his striking and workrate against haye) balence (never over committing and leaving himself openas he use to do and even did against brewster fight one). We must look at tape. And as far as vitalys injuries go there is really no knocking him. I must ask were u watching the fights? Have u watched the tape? True boxing analysts give the klitschkos their due. The tape doesn’t lie. Its not for no reason lennox was willing to fight anyone not named klitschko following the bout with vitaly. Its not for no reason he retired when the wbc made the vitaly rematch mandatory and told lennox he would be stripped if he fought anyone but vitaly. But seriously the tape doest lie neither do statistics and compubox. Lennox came in averaging 31 jabs a round against his opponents. He could only be “credited” with 51 total after half a figt with vitaly. THIS IS HUGE. Lennox at that point may have been histories best range master or second at worst to holmes. Vitaly came in and smoked lennox. Dominating range ring generalship and compubox. Everything was based off dominating range and that was the big question going into vitaly vs lennox “who would dminaye the range? Who’s style would prevail? Vitaly outlanded lennox every round. Vitaly concussively had lnnox hurt bad. Every phase of the game put near vitaly dominated BUT holding and hitting (illegal) and is what lennox had to do. Like ref cortez jumped lennoxs ass for in round 2 or 3 when lennox faced tucker in like 92 in lennox first championship bout. Lennox career is rife with this illegal move. Holding with the left hitting with the right. Styles make fights and there is no doubt vitalys style was imposed upon lennox

Posted May 4, 2013 5:29 am

U don’t have to let vitaly off. Facts speak for themselves. Only lost by injury in fights he was smokin and green. Heavyweight record BEAST. Plus/minus ratio, ko %, guiness book of world record, never given a standing 8, knocked down, or out, imposed his will on all he fought. In his first heavyweight championship bout knocked his opponent ktfo with A JAB. I mean the hole number on lennox and retireing him, the standing champ. If u know lennox and followed his career, if u know the vitaly vs lennox bout, then u know how awesome vitaly is. 41 and still smoke’en em son

Posted May 4, 2013 5:04 am

Merchant doesn’t get paid what he does and have the regard he does for no reason. Floyd doesn’t like him cause he aks the questions that need to be asked. larrys prolly the best of all time better than cossell. Merchants loved for his views and his outspokenness. By many. I like everyone else have my fav fighters through the years but I consider myself an objective fan and challenge anyone to question that specifically that I may responde

Posted May 4, 2013 4:53 am

Yeah. Real fans have opinions real analysts have opinions and views. They don’t sit in the middle on the fence. Moreover, nobodies perfect. Nobody is ever gonna speak perfectly but when it comes to talkin boxing merchant, roach, rafael are the goods and I enjoy their perspective. My favs and the current best. Actually the best for awhile. The other guy I would put with them is steward. But sadly, he is gone. STILL A HUGE LOSS

Tarks a very good poster. One of the best on east side that I have seen

Posted May 4, 2013 3:04 am

I’m a big dan rafael fan. Big larry merchant fan. And big freddy roach fan. They have a good perspective when it comes to discussing fights. These guy are my current favs

Posted May 4, 2013 2:59 am

Tark- haye doesn’t deserve all that on one fight. Plus mercant said it best following the wlad vs haye bout. Haye would have to pull his sorts down to show the real problem. Maybe the best line by any commentator post fight I have ever heard. Haye doesn’t just jump the rankings handing chis his 4th loss in a row. Haye and fury both beat chisora. What fury and haye should be top ranked based on chisora? No. When your as deplorable as haye was vs wlad and all the retirement talk and all the clean out the heavyweight division talk only to clean out the 39 and 40 year olds. The barrets, ruizs, and harrisons (who were ALREADY cleaned out). Hayes lucky to be getting anything. The guys been an utter disgrace. Not even chisora plus charr culd pull him out. Hayes got work to put in. I think haye may be the best after the klitschkos but its speculation and subjectivity. As I said haye needs to work now and act like a fighter. Multiple fights.

Posted May 4, 2013 2:57 am

Dan is OK but his rankings stink… After saying Chisora-Haye would be a very tough fight, and go the distance most likely, and also Sugar Ray Leonard saying Chisora-Haye would be an extremely tough fight, Haye put on an exhibition of boxing, punching, footwork, and defense — and just smashed Chisora like a roach.. So Dan said Haye should be in the Top-10.. Get out of here, that made Haye the top contender or 2nd to Pulev at the very least. That’s whay happens when fat guys who never fought do rankings.

I’m watching epix looking forward to dan rafael. I hope he’s on there and drops some good heavyweight views and all time views

Wlad is great but their are about 30 guys out there who would take Pianeta. Another crap mismatch. Wlad will make it entertaining for the networks and fans.

Posted May 3, 2013 11:28 pm

I can imagine Wladimir getting out-pointed… By Vitali… Wladimir was behind on ALL scorecards to Corrie Sanders..

Vitali has NEVER been behind on the scorecards in any of his 47 professional fights.. Peter knocked Wladimir down 3 times for Peter’s only defeat. Vitali came back after a 4-year-layoff to rehab his legs. With NO warmup fights he beat Peter every minute of every round, controlling him almost every second.

Vitali is the only main event Heavyweight to ever stop Ross Puritty, who fought anybody and everybody who would face him.

Vitali stopped 2 Heavyweight who KO’d Wladimir – Sanders and Puritty.

Posted May 3, 2013 10:34 pm

It is almost inconceivable to imagine Wlad (or Vitali) ever getting out boxed and it ever being close on the scorecards”

I’m sorry but actually getting knocked out 3 times = getting outboxed, so don’t imagine it, it’s real.

Posted May 3, 2013 10:17 pm

How long did Puritty, Brewster, or Sanders hold the Heavyweight championship??? All of 5 title defenses between them… He who laughs last laughs best.

Posted May 3, 2013 9:43 pm

Wladimir lost to Brewster with Steward in his corner??? Well Yeah!! He had been with Steward for only one training camp — not enough time for Steward’s teachings to take effect… Wladimir won every fight since but hit his stride about 3 years after starting work with Steward, and has been getting better ever since… Johnathan Banks, his current trainer, has been with Steward for more than 15 years and is practically a clone of Steward… He recently blitzed the highly touted American Heavyweight, the undefeated Seth Mitchell, in 2 dominant rounds.

In the rematch Brewster couldn’t get past Wladimir’s jab and quit in his corner after losing every round by a wide margin.

Fight Aficionado

Ah, looks like the usual haters are out. How anyone hates on either of the K Bros is beyond me. They’ve mowed down all of the best comp of the last decade, ducking nobody. Of course these same so-called boxing fans are probably the same ones who root on cherry pickers who happen to be American.

Posted May 3, 2013 5:40 pm

Wlad has a better chin than the haters think, but Vitali has a better chin. Wlad with Vitali’s chin would be the perfect fighter, simpky unbeatable.

fit and trim and ready to take care of business, lock and load!

Posted May 3, 2013 4:35 pm

I never said Ali had a softer chin than Wlad but I do also believe that Wlad has a much better chin that most of the haters give him credit for

Posted May 3, 2013 4:33 pm

It is almost inconceivable to imagine Wlad (or Vitali) ever getting out boxed and it ever being close on the scorecards, yet this has been the fate of just about every other master heavyweight who ever laced’em up. Ali had two many close calls too mention. You had Holmes against Whiterspoon. Lewis against Mercer only sc raping an MD that many felt Mercer should’ve got. For me the Brothers are clearly the best and most dominant ever. Like it or lump it.

Posted May 3, 2013 4:30 pm

Oh yeah, I agree TARK and it always bugged me that Young didn’t get the points over Ali and the title like he should have. Spinks beat him pretty good
and that bout is probably one of his problems today, yet 1 judge still went with Ali for a S/D.

Posted May 3, 2013 4:28 pm

Yeah thats right Bluzie, both K-bros would maul Ali

Posted May 3, 2013 4:28 pm

Fish Eyes wasn’t it the first fight with Steward? You can’t vastly improve a fighter in just one camp. Truth is Wlad became much better after a few fights with Steward and is almoust unbeatable. If he had a good chin he would be unbeatable.

Posted May 3, 2013 4:26 pm

Or I should have said “Are you arguing otherwise” Modern, about what I just said about Ali? Either Klitschko would PARK Ali

Posted May 3, 2013 4:22 pm

Modern Boxing, yes and Ali was put on his ass and fortunate the bell rang against a light heavyweight in Cooper. He LOST to a 7 fight novice in spinks (who retired with a stellar record of 26-17), it is universely accepted that he recieved his share of GIFT decisions that could have and often SHOULD have gone to the other guy (Norton (at least twice) Young). Do you deny any of this Modern or to you does only the sun shine out of Ali’s posterior?

K-2- Fan

When they look at Wlad , the way he looks , all fit and trim and ready to
take care of business , it must drive the resident trolls a little mad . Because
no sane person would come up with some of the ones these clowns do ! Yeah ,
Ali had a ” great ” chin , maybe that’s why the ” mighty ” Jack Wepner , the
liquor salesman , from Detroit , knocked him on his ass ! And Wlad is definitely
a ” roid ” abuser , we have the solemn word of at least two trolls , what more proof do you need . Listen to Tark , boys , he’s forgotten more about boxing
than you’re capable of learning in two lifetimes !

Posted May 3, 2013 4:18 pm

i’m surprised Pianete looks good in that pic i remember him being fatass! he looks defined!

Fish Eyes

TARK.. “Wladimir lost 3 fights when he had terrible technique and before he hooked up with Emmanuel Steward…” Emanuel Steward was Wladimir’s trainer when he lost to Brewster..

Posted May 3, 2013 2:14 pm

Agree Modern Boxing, Tark like to trash Ali big deal. Ali has meet 9 HOF and beat 8 of them, but tark prefer to recall how Spinks or Holmes beat a parkinsonian Ali. Tark has to be very subjective to convince posters that Wladimir comp was better, but it only works with ignorants . It’s time to wake up Tark, even guys like Evangelista or Bugner than Ali meet were better than Mormeck or Wach. Also agree about the roid issue.

Perez cs Walker will be a good fight. The girls will also put on a good show. Wlad vs Pianeta…………… pure crap “strange I typed this and it came up anonymous”

Posted May 3, 2013 1:43 pm

I hope Wlad isn’t too muscled up… he has a tendency to gas if he throws too much, and that much muscle needs oxygen. I think he should be at 240 or so max.

Posted May 3, 2013 1:18 pm

Waste of time opponent

Posted May 3, 2013 1:13 pm

Pianeta does look good but his pecs are too wide… It looks like he may be doing barbell bench presses which widen the pecs and impede your ability to throw a flurry of inside hooks for instance.. You do bench presses with dumbbell because they isolate your triceps and don’t widen your chest, while still strengthening the most important muscles for delivering straight punches.. Wladimir looks about right.

Posted May 3, 2013 1:09 pm

yeah, haye 7 pounds heavier than for the haye fight.
pianeta atleast in shape, taken in seriously, unlike these fat americans

Posted May 3, 2013 1:04 pm

At 37, and 249lbs Wladimir is fit and trim… Wladimir looks better than Ali did at 34 and 230lbs vs Jimmy Young—who BTW had only 17 wins… That’s right, 17 wins.. Reporter Frank Lotierzo called Ali “A fish out of water flopping on the beach” and said every observer he talked to thought Young deserved the decision.. Ali was widely out-scored in punches landed but received a UD for being Muhammad Ali.. Fighters usually gain size and strength as they get older.. Ali gained size and fattness for this fight.. You can see that fight on YouTube and judge for yourself.

Posted May 3, 2013 12:53 pm
