Suge Green’s Boxing Notebook: DLH: “Luckily He (Pac) Doesn’t Hit Hard”; More

by Suge Green – February 22nd 2009 – As we continue inching ever closer to the May showdown between Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton and pound for pound superstar Manny Pacquiao, let’s consider recent comments made by Oscar De La Hoya about his ill fated effort against the Filipino (as reported in the L.A. Times)…”I felt as if he could just land anything and I couldn’t do anything about it. I just didn’t care. I didn’t care if he was hitting me because I couldn’t do anything about it. Luckily he doesn’t hit hard.. Obviously, if he would’ve hit hard, he would have knocked me out with no problem.” I guess Oscar doesn’t count TKOs as KO defeats. He’s going to have to be specific in the future then about his victories over Mayorga, Campas, Vargas, and even Gatti. The last time he scored a knockout without a “T” in front of it was against a guy named Derrell Coley 9 years ago this month. Doh.

The rumored heavyweight battle between “Fast” Eddie Chambers and “Nigerian Nightmare” Samuel Peter is now official, with the date and venue being announced this past week, it goes down March 27th at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live, in Los Angeles on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. This is a classic style vs. style affair, pitting a strong puncher against a slick technician. In a conversation with OnTheGrind Boxing Chambers confided that he’s been surprised early on with how many fans and figures in the sport like his chances, “I thought it would be the other way around,” said Eddie. It’s no easy task picking a winner in this contest, let’s just say it’s another example of how the boxing fan is winning in ’09.

Yuriokis Gamboa impressed on Friday in Ft. Lauderdale Florida, defeating Walter Estada inside of 35 seconds. To the relief of those in attendance and those tuning in to the bout live, Gamboa remained upright for the entire fight.

The Bobfather, Bob Arum stated this week that he spoke to Fernando Montiel about facing Vic Darchinyan conqueror, Nonito Donaire (who is currently preparing to face Raul Martinez), and that Montiel was “Very, very willing.” Top Rank’s top dog also promises a rematch between Donaire and Vic down the line, “I will make Gary Shaw an offer that he can’t refuse and we will see a rematch of that fight, believe me.” Vic has been impressive as of late, and will hopefully push Shaw for this bout. Shaw has been resistant in the recent past about the bout, and has stated that he doesn’t intend to match Darchinyan up with Donaire due to Donaire’s lack of loyalty toward Shaw. No, they didn’t used to date…Shaw formerly promoted Donaire. You got to love boxing

Rumors are floating around boxing circles that Zab Judah may be looking for a big fight at 140, we will follow the developments closely and report on them first.
