Oscar De La Hoya recalls his great win over Ike Quartey: I couldn’t walk for like two weeks afterwards

Oscar De La Hoya recalls his great win over Ike Quartey: I couldn't walk for like two weeks afterwards

What was former multi-weight world champion Oscar De La Hoya’s finest ring victory: his KO over heated rival Fernando Vargas, his close points win over the defensive wizard that was Pernel Whitaker, his first stoppage win over the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez?

Maybe it was in fact De La Hoya’s 1999 welterweight decision win over African terror Ike Quartey. This fight, one that saw “The Golden Boy” operating at his absolute peak, is also a fight that saw De La Hoya hit the deck – only to get up and win the war with the dangerous puncher known as “Bazooka.”

Results: Benavidez defeats Gavril, wins vacant WBC 168lb title

At 20 years, 9 months old, David Benavidez became boxing’s youngest world champion – and the youngest ever in the super middleweight division – with a split decision victory over Ronald Gavril on Friday night on an exciting night of 168-pound action on SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION from The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Benavidez (19-0, 17 KOs) placed the previously vacated WBC Super Middleweight belt around his waist after winning the title against former European amateur standout Gavril (18-2, 14 KOs) in what Benavidez later described as quite possibly the “Fight of the Year.” One scorecard had Gavril winning 116-111, with Benavidez winning on the other two scorecards, 116-111 and 117-111 in the event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

Flyweight Wars 2.0

Flyweight Wars 2.0

This Saturday night the rematch between Roman Gonzalez and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai at the super flyweight division along with the rest of the HBO tripleheader could be the spark that ignites round two if you will of the Flyweight Wars. Several years ago a plethora of fights took place at the flyweight division sparking a round-robin feel amongst 7 or 8 fighters. It was a wonderful thing to witness as many hardcore fans got a taste of what boxing use to be like in its heyday.

Joshua-Pulev under-card continues to grow with addition of Thomas-Allen Commonwealth heavyweight title fight rematch

With the majority of fans pretty much expecting IBF/WBA heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua to win in commanding fashion when he meets Kubrat Pulev in Cardiff on October 28, the event is in need of a solid under-card. And one is currently shaping up.

Confirmed now are three title fights: Kal Yafai will defend his WBA super-flyweight title against Sho Ishida, Frank Buglioni and Callum Johnson will clash with both the British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight titles on the line, and at heavyweight, Lenroy Thomas and David Allen will clash in a rematch of the fight they had in May on the Spence-Brook card.

Golovkin sends warning to Canelo

Golovkin sends warning to Canelo

Boxing’s No. 1 superhero and undefeated WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO Middleweight World Champion, GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN and lineal and Ring magazine Middleweight World Champion and Mexican icon Canelo Alvarez are entering their epic showdown with each coming off very different performances.   On March 18, in front of a packed Madison Square Garden, Golovkin beat fellow world champion Daniel Jacobs by unanimous decision in a hard-fought battle.  It was Golovkin’s 18th consecutive title defense — two short of the record — since becoming world champion in 2010 and the first to go the distance.  That had media speculating that age was starting to become a factor for Golovkin, currently boxing’s longest-reigning world champion.  Two months later, on May 6 — at a catchweight of 164.5 pounds (the less-than-super super middleweight division?) — Alvarez won a lopsided unanimous decision over former middleweight champion Julio César Chȧvez, Jr., who barely threw a punch and did everything he could do to survive.  Not win.

Jeff Horn's next opponent still TBA; a number of top-10 fighters in consideration

Two things seem certain when it comes to Jeff Horn, the undefeated WBO welterweight champ: he will fight again, in Australia before the end of the year, and it will not be against Manny Pacquiao.

Pac Man, who shockingly lost to Horn on July 2, has stated how he still wants a return fight with Horn, but not until next year as he is busy with his many Senatorial duties. But Horn wishes to stay active and right now a suitable, top-10 rated fighter is being negotiated. A day ago, a news story broke saying how Britain’s Bradley Skeete, 27-1(12) and the reigning WBO European welterweight champion, had got the big fight, but Dean Lonergan of Duco who promote Horn has issued an official statement saying that this report was guilty of being premature.
