Murray meets Torosyan on Smith-Skoglund undercard
Martin Murray (35-4-1, 16 KOs) will face Arman Torosyan (18-3-1, 15 KOs) on the undercard of the World Boxing Super Series quarter-final contest between Callum Smith and Erik Skoglund on September 16 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.
DeMarkus Jones – In the last few weeks we lost quite a few great boxers to retirement. Timothy Bradley, Tyson Fury (maybe) and two names sure to inspire debate amongst boxing fans. Juan Manuel Marquez and Wladimir Klitschko. Both had long stellar successful careers. Both are Hall of Fame worthy. However should they be remembered as two of the greats of this era. FLOYD MAYWEATHER – There could be no other topic for my column of today other than Floyd Mayweather.
Before I start, I would like to invite all of you to reach out and help the victims of Harvey in Texas. There are many ways of doing so, the WBC is doing activations to raise funds and direct such to the proper entities handling this crisis. But there are many ways you can help, even with just making a phone call.
As part of the hugely enjoyable 30 for 30 series, ESPN will, on September 13, put out a show devoted to late heavyweight puncher and former WBO champ Tommy Morrison. The trailer is available now and going by the teaser this one should be excellent.
Morrison, who sadly passed away at the age of just 44 in 2013, sure crammed a lot into his short life – and not all of it was good. A true American tragedy, Morrison – at one point in time the quintessential blue eyed, blonde haired all American kid – suffered a most rapid fall from grace.
Oscar De La Hoya is still angry over the way the heavily hyped Floyd Mayweather – Conor McGregor “Super Fight” hurt the sport of boxing, embarrassed it even. Though McGregor surprised many with his spirited effort, one that saw him, in his boxing debut, push an ageing Mayweather into the late rounds of what was actually a fun fight to watch, De La Hoya isn’t giving the MMA star much credit.
Love him or loathe him, and whether you’re going to miss him or you are saying good riddance; Floyd Mayweather Junior has waved goodbye to the boxing ring. Yes, many great fighters of the past did the same thing, only to have a change of heart – ego-driven or down to financial need – and launch a come back, but it looks as though we can take “Money” at his word.
Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight Champion Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) and WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO Middleweight Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) hosted an open media workout at L.A. LIVE ahead of their highly anticipated showdown. Canelo vs. Golovkin, the battle for the middleweight championship of the world, will take place on Sept. 16 and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.
The workout also featured televised Pay-View-View undercard fighters Joseph “JoJo” Diaz, Jr., Randy “El Matador” Caballero, and Diego De La Hoya. Here’s what the fighters had to say during today’s media workout about their upcoming bouts:
(A letter to a friend about the McGregor vs Maywether fight the other night)
I did not watch the fight the other night. I had my reasons but I have many friends and family that did. One friend (Greg) in particular who loves Conner McGregor and MMA was really into the whole event. He’s a great guy! After the fight he immediately called me insisting that McGregor did better than anyone had expected and said how proud he was of him.

As fight fans know, Floyd Mayweather Junior reached the incredible milestone of 50-0 as a pro boxer on Saturday night with his stoppage win over a debut-making Conor McGregor. However, not everyone is willing to accept that “Money” has really, truly, honestly beaten heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano’s famous 49-0 ledger.
One of these people is Rocky Marciano Junior, who told The New York Post that in his opinion Mayweather’s 50th win came in an “exhibition” bout and that Floyd’s 50-0 record should have one big asterisk placed on it.
