Fury sees himself easily beat Chisora this Summer

Heavyweight Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KO’s) isn’t worried in the least about the new and improved Dereck Chisora (20-4, 13 KO’s) now that he’s shed 15-20 lbs of fat and is fighting at a leaner and meaner weight for him. Chisora and Fury are heading towards a Summer clash in the UK, which will likely be a WBO heavyweight eliminator bout. Fury feels that he’s going to dominate Chisora just like he did three years ago when they fought in 2011. Fury won the fight by a lopsided 12 round decision over a much fatter 260 lb. Chisora.

Chisora and Fury fought on the same card last night at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. A heavy-looking Fury dispatched Joey Abell in the 4th round, whereas Chisora battled to a 12 round unanimous over Kevin Johnson. Neither of them looked anywhere near the class of IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in the skills department.

The heavyweight division was the particular focal point of the ‘Rock the Box III’ event staged last night, Feb’ 15th, at the Copper Box Arena, London.

The card was stacked with boxers from differing career levels, with some names only known by a handful of loyal fans and others who will be recognised by the global boxing community, but the two main events were heavyweight bouts that could ultimately make an impact on the division.

To write up the recent state of affairs of the heavyweight division would be merely an attempt to reword the many texts to have been already produced on the matter. The bottom line is: it can only get better.

Like many fans, my introduction to the sweet science came from watching the highlight reel knockouts of Mike Tyson. A casual viewer at first, I soon became enamoured with the sport after watching such greats as Pernell Whitaker, Roy Jones Jr. and Lennox Lewis. Craving more, I decided to check out some of the great fighters of old. Every now and then, ESPN Classics would spotlight fighters such as Roberto Duran, Mohammed Ali or even Sugar Ray Robinson.

Eventually, I came upon Smokin’ Joe Frazier. I had heard the name, of course, but had not seen any of his fights. They were showing his first fight with George Foreman – Kingston, Jamaica in 1973. I could still feel the electricity all these years later as the fighters entered the ring.

And that staredown.

Friday night in front of a standing room only crowd at The Paramount and a nationally televised ESPN Friday Night Fights audience, “The Fighting Pride of Huntington”, Chris Algieri won a dominant ten round unanimous decision over world ranked junior welterweight Emanuel Taylor of Baltimore, Maryland by scores of 98-92, and 97-93 twice.

The ESPN Friday Night Fights/Rockin’ Fights 12 event was the 12th consecutive sellout at The Paramount for Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing.

With the win Algieri improved his undefeated record to 19-0 with eight stoppages while Taylor, ranked #4 by the International Boxing Federation moved to 17-2 with twelve knockouts.

Khan encouraging his twitter followers to push for Mayweather fight

Showing signs of worry about his status for his proposed May 3rd fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Amir Khan is now encouraging his 1.4 million twitter followers to work in his favor to exert pressure on Mayweather Jr. to force him to give him the fight next. Khan did the same tactics to win the twitter/Facebook book in his competition with Marcos Maidana in the poll that Mayweather had created at his promotions website. Khan asked his 1.4 million followers to go to the website and vote for him, and they responded by helping him overcome a huge deficit to defeat Maidana in the poll by a margin of 57% to 43%.

Chisora decisions Johnson; Fury stops Abell

British heavyweight Dereck Chisora (20-4, 13 KO’s) literally got away with murder tonight in throwing punches to the back of the head of his opponent Kevin Johnson (29-5-1, 14 KO’s) for 12 rounds in beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Copper Box Arena in London. UK. It’s been years since I’ve seen a fighter throw as many rabbit punches as I saw Chisora throw tonight. It was constant and painful looking.

I thought I was watching Chuck Wepner vs. Muhammad Ali tonight, because Chisora was nailing Johnson in the back of the head round after round without the referee Terry O’Connor lifting a finger to stop Chisora from doing it. He chose to ignore the fouling from Chisora, and the fight came down to Johnson having to put up with it and take the shots as best as he could.

Khan unhappy about having to wait on news about next fight

Amir Khan isn’t a happy camper right now after waiting for almost a week without hearing anything from the Mayweather camp about his next fight on May 3rd. Khan thought he had earned the right to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the ring by virtue of his victory over Marcos Maidana in the Mayweather Promotions poll last week, but Mayweather has gone quiet ever since he announced the poll.

Rumors are circulating around that Mayweather has decided to fight Maidana next regardless of the poll results, and that they want Khan to fight Adrien Broner on the undercard if he’s willing to agree to that.

Fury and Chisora with a lot to lose tonight if they get beat

Tonight two of the best heavyweights in England will be in action in separate bouts with a lot on the line for both of them. England’s Dereck Chisora (19-4, 13 KO’s) has a 12 round fight against Kevin Johnson (29-4-1, 14 KO’s) in the main event at the Copper Box Arena. In the co-feature, heavyweight Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) fights Joey Abell (29-7, 28 KO’s). The promoters for Fury and Chisora want to match them up in a fight in the Summer in a WBO heavyweight title eliminator bout, but both guys need to make sure they win their fights tonight against their less than dangerous opposition.

Both Fury and Chisora should win tonight as long as they’re smart, and can hold up under the power of their opposition. They’re decent heavyweights, Chisora and Fury, but they’re not good enough to where you can positively say they’ll win each time they’re in the ring. Fury brings drama with him because of his weak chin. It doesn’t matter that he’s never fought a good heavyweight in his career; he’s still vulnerable to getting hurt even by opposition without a lot of talent.

Tyson Fury tips-in at a heavy 274-pounds for clash with Joey Abell!

The weights are in for tomorrow’s heavyweight doubleheader in London, and the biggest shock/newsworthy item is the poundage Tyson Fury came in at.

Fury tipped-in at 274-pounds, some twenty pounds heavier than for his last fight, while his opponent Joey Abell came in at 241-pounds. Fury did not remove his shirt while weighing in.

In the chief support, Dereck Chisora, who has battled weight problems himself in the past, came in at a solid 238-pounds. His rival, Kevin Johnson, who is aiming to score the upset and ruin plans for a Chisora-Fury rematch in the summer, tipped-in at 240-pounds.

So, the Fury fight will attract most headlines and unbeaten Tyson’s weight has already done so. For those fans who like to bet on the underdog, maybe Abell is a fighter worth betting on.
