Oscar Valdez gets off floor to win action-packed decision over Genesis Servania; Carl Frampton fight could be next

Last night in Tucson in an enjoyable 12 round fight that was full of action, up-and-coming Mexican star Oscar Valdez retained his WBO featherweight title with an up from the floor decision win over Genesis Servania of the Philippines. Valdez prevailed by wide scores of 117-109, 116-110, 115-111 and he is now 23-0(19). Servania, who proved to be dangerous and game throughout, fell to 29-1(12).

WBO featherweight world champion Oscar Valdez (23-0, 19 KOs) survived a scare in getting knocked down in round 4 by challenger Genesis Servania (29-1, 12 KOs) last Friday night, but Valdez was able to get up off the deck and go on to win a 12 round unanimous decision victory at the Tucson Convention Center in Tucson, Arizona.

1. Canelo is a better boxer than advertised. I was quite surprised with how well Canelo boxed in this fight. Not to say he is a bad boxer. Speed was just never his calling card. Technique, precision and power were his tools of the trade. However tonight Canelo showed excellent footwork. Great handspeed and combinations. He was very elusive at times as well. Canelo is becoming a more complete fighter. A scary thought for the rest of the Middleweight division.

Tonight in Las Vegas, after fans witnessed an excellent, truly engrossing battle that went right down to the wire, middleweight king Gennady Golovkin retained his belts by way of a draw – a result that is sure to be viewed as THE most controversial of the year.

Scores were an insane 118-110 to Canelo, 115-113 for GGG and 114-114. Simply put, these two have to do it again. Golovkin is now 37-0-1(33). Canelo is now 49-1-2(34).
