Kell Brook: My Injury Is Genuine

It’s not exactly of ‘did aliens land at Roswell?’ or ‘who shot JFK?’ proportions, yet a persistent conspiracy theory has surrounded IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s rib ‘injury,’ an injury that postponed tonight’s scheduled clash with Argentina’s Diego Chaves.

Many quarters on social media have questioned the legitimacy of the ailment, with reasons given for it including Eddie Hearn wishing to move the fight to his December PPV show, as well as Brook struggling to make 147 in time; rumours that Hearn recently called ‘absolute rubbish.’

Amidst all the confusion, Brook has himself spoken to Sky Sports to confirm that he is seeking to get back in the ring as soon as possible, saying the injury is genuine, and that he couldn’t risk his world title while not 100%.

“My weight was bang on. I was on all the targets in the gym, so it is a genuine injury,” he said regarding the theories about him missing weight.

“It is very, very sore and to go into a fight with someone like Chaves, a tough customer renowned for going for the body, I am nowhere near 100%, so I could not put my future or my world title in jeopardy.”

“I love this game but I hate it sometimes, but what can you do? There’s no point in crying over it. I will keep myself in good shape, look after myself and hopefully recover in quick time – and then get another date soon.”

Hearn recently said that medical evidence regarding the bruised ribs – a notoriously hard to prove injury – had been sent to the IBF and that he was thinking of making it public, although nothing has been as yet publicly produced.

He also stated in the same interview with iFLtv that he felt it unlikely Brook would box again this year before then doing an about-turn and saying it was entirely possible he could be on the December 12 (PPV) bill in London, or on an as yet unconfirmed card on Dec. 19.
