Ghana’s Isaac ‘Royal Storm’ Dogboe will take at least two more ‘warm-up’ fights before considering a possible shot at the world title, father and trainer of the Ghanaian boxer, Paul Dogboe has revealed.
The undefeated Dogboe (16-0, 10 KOs) scored a round seven knockout victory over Julian Evaristo Aristule of Argentina to win the hitherto vacant WBO International and Aristule’s WBO Latino super bantamweight titles at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand last Saturday. It was a fight between two boxers rated number 8 and 9 respectively to the WBO super bantamweight belt held by Jesse Magdaleno of the US, setting the potential of the winner rising up to take a shot at the world title next.
But Dogboe Snr says despite the stoppage victory, he wasn’t impressed by the performance of his son against Aristule and will like to test him further before deciding on taking a crack at the world title even though he is very confident Isaac can beat Magdaleno.
“He’s done a great job by knocking this guy out but then he didn’t impress me in the fight we just had. He won, everybody saw it, knockout, boom, won but we have to hold on the world title fight. I have to put him in a couple of fights, at least one or two to assess him,” Paul Dogboe said from Los Angeles, USA where the team flew to barely 24 hours after the victory in New Zealand.
“Remember he’s not done the junior featherweight for four years, he stayed in featherweight for four years before we moved him down to junior featherweight so I want to see him properly strong at that weight before I can let him fight Jesse Magdaleno. We know he can beat Jesse Magdaleno because he fought him before, Isaac sparred Magdaleno in Vegas,” Dogboe Snr continued.
“So that’s the decision we’ve taken. We would watch him a little bit and see what he can learn, how strong he really is with what I describe as warm up fights, preparing him. He has to impress his daddy, coach, the technical team then we move forward,” he explained.
Paul Dogboe added: “It’s pretty much so, I can’t give him a title shot now if his performance in the last fight wasn’t great enough. It’s not because he is my son but because that’s how the game goes, we want to break records, we want to set records.
“We want to surpass where the legendary Azumah Nelson left off and where Isaac is taking the baton and taking it to the next level. It’s not about being a champion but it’s about staying there and having the belt for eleven years and being great and being called the greatest of all time. We want to break records.”
