The highly anticipated rematch between undefeated unified WBA/WBC/IBF middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) and lineal middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) is scheduled for May 5 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada – the same venue as their first encounter from last September.
While their first fight may not have lived up to its lofty expectations, it still wound up being a very good competitively fought encounter. But despite that, the fight still wound up disappointing a large portion of fans, when it was controversially ruled a draw. Fans were especially outraged by the ridiculous scorecard of one Adalaide Byrd who inexplicably scored the contest 118-110 in favor of Canelo. This scorecard was in no way reflective of the action that had transpired inside the ring.
Canelo started well early in the contest, where his advantages in speed and big fight experience gave him the early edge. Triple G seemed uncharacteristically unfocused, in part due to Canelo’s skills, and perhaps also from being a little overwhelmed by the enormous magnitude of the event. But Golovkin eventually settled in, and began fighting effectively, where it seemed that Gennady was controlling the action and dictating the terms of the fight. But the judges did not see it this way.
Dave Moretti scored it 115-113 for Gennady Golovkin, Don Trella had it a draw 114-114, and Adalaide Byrd inexplicably scored the bout 118-110 in favor of Canelo Alvarez. The overwhelming majority of observers believe that Golovkin earned and deserved the victory. Most observers believe that HBO’s unofficial scorer Harold Lederman provided a far more accurate scoring of the fight on his unofficial card, where he had it 116-112 in favor of Golovkin.
But all of that is now in the past, as the two elite level boxers prepare to do battle again. What will happen in this highly anticipated rematch, and who will emerge victorious?
