Pedraza captures IBO world title, Rivera and Paredes win pro debuts

PONCE, PUERTO RICO (March 23, 2014) – Last night at the auditorium Juan Pachin Vicens in Ponce, Puerto, undefeated super featherweight contender, Jose “Sniper” Pedraza (16-0, 10 KOs) captured the vacant International Boxing Organization super featherweight world title, with a dominating unanimous decision victory against Mexico’s Alberto “Kichis” Garza (26-7-1, 21 KOs). Scorecards read 119-109, 118-110 and 117-111.

“This was another fight where I went the distance and learned a lot.” said Pedraza. “I’m working on everything each time I step in the ring. I’m feeling more comfortable while I’m honing in on my skills to get better. I feel I’m ready to fight any of the other world champions in my division, but ‘m going to leave that up to my promoters, Gary Shaw, Lou DiBella and Javier Bustillo. I’ll fight anyone anywhere. I’m ready to make my people proud. Fighting in Puerto Rico is the best.”

Newly signed amateur stars, bantamweight Jean “Chapito” Rivera (1-0) and featherweight Luis Paredes (1-0) were successful, winning their pro debuts convincingly.

Rustam Nugaev and Jose Pedraza victorious on ESPN Friday Night Fights

1789 In the 10-round main event, Russian sluger Rustam Nugaev continued to impress the boxing world with a spectacular performance against a game Jose Hernandez. Both fighters had their moments in the early rounds. Hernandez would land combinations in spurts as did Nugaev, but it was the Russian who did the most damage in the exchanges. In the fifth round, Rustam landed a solid temple shot, followed by a vicious body blow that put Hernandez down and out. Nugaev never backed up during the fight and the pressure was too much for Hernandez who gave a valiant effort in defeat. With the KO victory, Nugaev moves to (27-4, 15 KOs) as Hernandez drops to (14-7-1, 6 KOs). The bout was stopped the 1:38 mark of round 5.
