(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) The co-featured bout at Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY wasn’t even minutes old before Daniel Jacobs 29-1-0 caught Sergio Mora with a short counter right. The punch landed on the button as Mora’s head was down and to his left. He had just finished landing a left to Jacob’s right side. It looked like Jacobs was going to have a easy night of it. Mora beat the count but looked a little shook as the referee Gary Rosato signaled for action to resume. Jacobs jumped on Mora with hard shots, but in the process he squared up and left himself open. Mora caught him with a good left hook, and down went Jacobs and up out of their seats came the crowd. Wow! What a beginning!

The first round ended with matching knockdowns, a tough round to score. The second round action had both men throwing a lot of jabs and combinations. The light punching Mora seemed to be holding his own, but it was obvious Jacobs was throwing the harder punches. Soon he had Mora on the run. Mora tried to shift his stance to give Jacobs angles, but his moves were awkward and ineffective. Jacobs was determined to close in and finish the job.

It’s Likely All Over for Paulie Malignaggi

(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) It looks like the curtain could well have come down on the long career of Brooklyn’s Paulie Malignaggi after defeat at the hands of former 140 lb champion Danny Garcia in New York last night, with “Swift” looking the bigger, stronger and bossier fighter throughout the 9 rounds the contest lasted.

Paulie was rocked backward by Garcia’s crisp jab in the opening round and that immediately set the tone of what was to come, with Malignaggi cut around the right eye early and looking like the 15 months of activity, coupled with his advancing years, had taken their toll on him.

(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) BROOKLYN (August 2, 2015) – Danny “Swift” Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) kept his perfect record intact Saturday with a ninth-round TKO of two-time world champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi (33-7, 7 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Garcia was able to control the fight with lead rights and counter left hooks that kept the agile Malignaggi from landing anything significant. The punishment took its toll on Malignaggi as a cut opened up on his right eye in the third round.

(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) We may have seen the end of former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi’s career tonight with him getting beaten up and stopped in the 9th round by former WBA/WBC 140lb champion Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The referee prematurely stopped the fight at 2:22 of the 9th round after Garcia stunned Malignaggi.

It didn’t matter that Malignaggi seemed to recover from the shot and was fighting back. The referee Arthur Mercante Jr. decided he’s seen enough from Malignaggi and chose to stop the fight. Malignaggi was cut in two places around his right eye at the time of the stoppage. However, the fight wasn’t stopped because of his cut.

The card faces the normal scrutiny that many Al Haymon events get but this scribe won’t be surprised if one of these match ups test the favorite more than fans think. Will the move to welterweight help or hurt Danny Garcia? Can Jacobs look impressive against a defensive fighter?

If we rewound the clock to just under two years ago we would find Danny Garcia at the top of the junior welterweight division. The Philadelphian’s victory over Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse placed him on the doorstep of the elite level and the exposure of being the co-feature to Mayweather/Canelo Showtime PPV raised his profile immensely.

In most cases it’s not a matter of what they did. Rather, it’s what they haven’t done. The match-up certainly wasn’t made in heaven, but it’s a sure bet the winner will look upward while thanking Al Haymon.

What’s at stake? The Premier Boxing Champions contest is being billed as one for bragging rights between Phillie’s undefeated superstar Danny “Swift” Garcia and Brooklyn’s own Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi at Barclays Center. Fans are having difficulty biting down hard on this kernel of corn.

Garcia has come under fire from some quarters for his victories over both Mauricio Herrera and Lamont Peterson either side of last year’s awful Rod Salka mismatch, with some fans on social media renaming the Philly fighter Danny “Gift” Garcia in lieu of him controversially getting the nod on those occasions.

Ahead of Saturday’s fight with Malignaggi, Garcia has spoken to ESPN.com to say he is feeling stronger at the weight and has no concerns regarding his 34 year old opponent, who is boxing for the first time since being destroyed in 4 rounds by Shawn Porter 15 months ago.

He is more comfortable behind the comms mic these days, and hasn’t been in a boxing ring since the four round beatdown in April last year at the hands of Shawn Porter, but Brooklyn’s Paulie Malignaggi returns on August 1st in a 12 round non-title bout against Danny Garcia on a PBC on ESPN card, and has said via fighthubtv that he has the bit back between his teeth again.

Malignaggi was due to box on the Khan/Algieri undercard back in May against the unheralded Danny O’Connor but withdrew through injury and now takes on the far tougher task of Garcia – who himself has been criticised for recent performances against Lamont Peterson and Mauricio Herrera – and is debuting at 147 lbs.
