Andre Ward faces Paul Smith on Saturday in 172lb catch-weight fight

Andre Ward (27-0, 14 KOs) will be making his long awaited ring return on Saturday in a catch-weight fight at 172 pounds against Paul Smith (35-5, 20 KOs) in Ward’s hometown in Oakland, California from the Oracle Arena. While some boxing fans think the 32-year-old Smith is unworthy of facing Ward, it’s not really a big deal.

Ward’s WBA super middleweight title won’t be on the line because of the fight taking place at a catch-weight of 172 in the light heavyweight division. Smith is coming into the fight for the payday, and of course with the hope that he can somehow pull off a big upset against the rusty Ward.

Liverpool’s super middleweight contender and former world title challenger Paul Smith goes into the lion’s den on June 20th when he travels to California and attempts to upset the returning Andre Ward in a fight many are viewing as an uphill struggle for the Brit – who is coming off back-to-back losses against Germany’s Arthur Abraham.

Speaking to fighthype.com, Smith was honest in his appraisal of his chances in the fight and clearly recognises he is a big underdog. However, he believes he can upset the odds if he boxes a smart fight – and is buoyed by the American’s inactivity – Ward last stepped through the ropes back in November of 2013.

American 168lb boss Andre Ward, who finally returns to the ring against Britain’s Paul Smith on June 20th in his hometown of Oakland, CA has spoken to fighthype.com following Saturday’s defining fight for Floyd Mayweather, to address the issue of GGG.

There have been numerous times that the Kazakh middleweight punchers trainer – Abel Sanchez – has accused the former P4P American of avoiding stepping in the ring with his fighter – something Ward vehemently denies.

Of the potential for a massive fight with Golovkin – who himself isn’t a huge 160 – and the rumours that have gone back and forth, Ward said;

So after much rumour and speculation, the confirmation has finally arrived, and it will be Britain’s Paul Smith (35-5, 20ko) who squares off in the opposite corner to the returning Andre Ward (27-0, 14ko) on June 20th in Oakland, California.

Ward is one of America’s best in my opinion, and despite a 19 month lay-off will walk into this non-title bout a heavy betting favourite against the Liverpool fighter, who has been cruelly referred to by fans as “not even the best super middleweight in the Smith family” in reference to younger brother, undefeated 168lb contender Callum Smith (15-0, 11ko).

American 168lb king Andre Ward (27-0, 14ko) has shown a self-deprecating sense of humour in a chat with fighthype.com, jokingly referring to his much talked about comeback as “the comeback 2.0”.

This obviously in reference to the agonising time out of the ring he has had since his last fight way back in November of 2013, and the mooted returns that have previously failed to materialise.

With a smile on his face, S.O.G said of his pencilled in June 20th date, “It’s the comeback 2.0. Let’s just clarify! You gotta laugh at yourself sometimes, man. It (the inactivity) is what it is..”

In a recent interview discussing his future, missing in action world class boxer Andre Ward told Sky Sports that he is interested in a rematch with Carl Froch. The two first met in the Super Six Final back in December 2011 when Ward defeated Froch by unanimous decision in a fight that was much less competitive than the scorecards suggested.

“The UK is one thing, Nottingham is something different” said Ward. “I’m not willing to come to Nottingham, I don’t think I should have to, but Wembley stadium, the UK as a whole – I would love to come”.

Froch has already come out and said that fights against Ward, Hopkins and DeGale simply did not interest him and he would likely retire rather than face any of those names. Rumors and speculation are flying around Twitter this morning as there are talks of a press release that was sent out that says the WBA has ordered Andre Ward (27-0, 1 KO) and Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KO) to square off again. The two parties were told they have 30 days to reach an agreement, and fight within 120 days or they will send the contest purse out for bidding.

The trainer for ‘Triple G’ Gennady Golovkin called out Andre Ward and his team in a recent interview with FightHype. In the interview he said that Ward shouldn’t mention Golovkins name is they were not willing to put money on the table in the form of a fight offer. Andre Ward is the guy who has Jay-Z in his corner and is generally regarded as the A side in the fight due to his victory in the super-six tournament so it is down to him to contact Golovkins people and start negotiations for the fight.

I do understand the problems Golovkin and his team are facing as the fighter has become a victim of his own success. In the destruction of each and every opponent they have faced, they have scared off the top names in the business.
