D’ Ugly Truth

Nacho is a great trainer, co’z all his fighters were never defeated. They just got robbed by the judges whenever they lost. Lol!

surprised “el finito” (ricardo lopez)didn’t top his list. I rate him as one of the best of all time he made boxing look really really easy.

@david d. – “… the greats of recent past that would destroy the overhyped “super stars” of today.”

Exactly. I don’t think Floyd can last 5 rounds with Hearns. Hearns would kill Pac in the 1st round. Peak George Foreman can take on the Klits one after the other.. on the same night. LOL.

My list:
Thomas Hearns, Aaron Pryor, Salvador Sanchez, Sugar Ray Leonard, Ray Boom Boom Mancini, Gabriel Flash Elorde, Pernell Whitaker, Lupe Pintor

IMHO Salvador Sanchez and Ricardo FINITO Lopez are amongst the best fighters not just to come out of Mexico, but to ever lace up the gloves. Sanchez is in my top 3 favourite fighters of all time and FINITO my top 5.

Below is a list off the top of my head of my favourite fighters for a variety of reasons since I got into boxing as a kid in the early 1980’s.

1. Hearns
2. Holmes
3. Sanchez
4. Gomez
5. Lopez
6. Boom Boom Mancini
7. Barrera
8. Joltin Jeff Chandler
9. Carl The Cat Thompson
10. Barry McGuigan
10. Eusebio Pedroza
10. Carlos Monzon

Truth- My memory is that Nacho only trained Oscar for one fight (vs Pac:), so it’s pretty logical he wouldn’t put him on the list. But Finito might be THE best fighter to come out of Mexico period, so that’s surprising.

@david d., “Recent and or casual boxing fans should really check out boxers and fights from the last three to four decades ago, on youtube….you will be surprised and entertained by styles and courage displayed by the top contenders and champions of yesterday.”

I agree 100%. But, then, they won’t be ‘recent and or casual boxing fans’ anymore.’ ;-)

What an impressive resume

Gilberto Roman is better than De La Hoya or Finito Lopez? I’d better go to youtube.

The Mad Scientist

One of the greatest trainers off all time..

Best trainer to teach you to teach you to take 5 and give 1. If it weren’t for Marquez’s concrete skull, he’d be ordinary and we’d never hear about the trainer. The chemist was much more important to Marquez’s legacy than this trainer. And of course, he’s a sourpuss.

I can’t think of a better trainer, maybe TBE imo

Big Ham

Ask him what his best managerial move with JMM was. Fighting Chris John in indonesia for 50k, or turning down a 5th fight with pacquiao in favor of losing to Tim Bradley.

Thanks James, for writting an article that has substance and educational value, in lieu of the filth that generates hate and disrepect from the great sport of boxing…lately, boxing has been hyjacked by classless thugs that are misguided.

The Pinoy Pikey

Nacho Beristain is an ATG trainer: that list fighters that he as trained is incredible: 4 enshrined HOF’ers in Finito, Zaragosa, ODLH and Chiqita Gonzales, and 2 more future HOF’ers in both JMM and RM, and maybe Jorge Arce finds his way in (hopefully, I love Travieso). That is something! Finito was incredible, and never get’s the recognition he deserves as an ATG and undefeated fighter?? I remember Chiqita’s great fights with Chang, Pascual and Michael Carbajal. Daniel Zaragosa was great as well–felt bad when he was stopped by Eric Morales. Perhaps, Nacho isn’t done yet–Go Nacho!

If you don’t and can’t show that you can train a fighter from the ground up, and make him reach a level above what others think he can only achieve, then you aren’t a GREAT TRAINER/TEACHER. You can be a Good “Coach” if you take an already made talent further in his career, but not a Trainer/Teacher. That label is special and reserved for the True Greats.

Nacho has the respect of the Boxing World and All Teachers in any subject.
