Gary Cornish Really Fancies the Task Ahead of Anthony Joshua Fight

Unbeaten Scottish heavyweight Gary Cornish (21-0, 12ko) has been something of a “forgotten man” ahead of his September 12th Commonwealth title clash with Anthony Joshua in London, as British fans in particular await AJ’s mooted end of year clash with fellow unbeaten Londoner Dillian Whyte, seemingly looking straight past the Inverness man.

However, September’s clash isn’t a popularity contest, and Cornish’s manager – veteran Scottish fight figure Tommy Gilmour – who looks after the fighter with the assistance of returning sex-swap promoter Kellie Maloney, feels his man is in the best possible shape and should not be overlooked ahead of the biggest fight of his career.

Gilmour is insistent that his man, Scotland’s best heavyweight for over 50 years, fancies the job in hand.

“There are not too many boxers up there where Gary is from, most of the boxers in Scotland come from Glasgow and that’s why (former undisputed world lightweight champ) Ken Buchanan, who is from Edinburgh, did not really take off,” Gilmour told ESPN.com

“Gary trains up in Inverness and we’ve been sending sparring partners up to him. Gary has never shied away from travelling and he’s sparred with the likes of Tyson Fury, Dereck Chisora, David Price and Kubrat Pulev to get his education moving.

“I’ve managed seven world champions and been involved with 70 world title fights and if Gary was to win this it would be a great final chapter to my career,” Gilour added.

“Joshua has the amateur pedigree but he’s had less professional fights than Gary and Gary really fancies it. Gary is Scotland’s best heavyweight hopeful for more than 50 years and this is a wonderful opportunity for him.”

Gary Cornish fights Anthony Joshua for the Commonwealth heavyweight crown, Sep 12, live on Sky Sports in the UK.
