Paulie is a much better commentator than a fighter.

Boxing is one of the few sports you don’t need a ton of talent to turn pro. It’s not baseball, basketball or football where only a few skilled athletes are drafted. Any joe schmo can get a pro fight, and any mediocre fighter can establish an impressive record with carefully hand-picked fights.

“He has never done one damn thing in boxing. ” Come on, Hecdog! Paulie won his second world title last year. He may have a mouth, wear weird hair and clothes, but he has turned out to be a very positive and excellent ambassador for the sport of boxing. He doesn’t do PEDs, doesn’t load his gloves, and he has never gone on and on for years about how he’s going to fight somebody then didn’t do it. Paulie will fight anyone. He’s proven it time and again and every time that man steps into the ring, he’s ready to go out on his shield. I just want to see Paulie’s hands stay healthy so we can see how he does, in the long run, as a welterweight. So far he’s doing great.

“pauly has the heart of a bear but he did get beat in his last fight ” Malachi, Paulie also broke his right hand/wrist in that fight and fought much of it with only one hand. And he still managed to squeak out a win. And yes, he really broke his hand as he was seen wearing a cast while commentating on other fights since beating Cano.

“Please get Antonio Tarver back on.” Tarver the cheat? At least Paulie has honor.

It’s Me, Ernie

Agreed, Paulie is tough as nails…

A lot of hate for PM. The guy is a good if not limited fighter. Jr’s lack of power is overlooked. Why is Paulie’s lack of power an issue if he wins? A very good commentator, not as deluded as you expect a fighter to be. PM didn’t get an easy pass up to a title shot like every star fighter today & was treated as an opponent even after he won a title. The guy’s resume is excellent & his losses are to top tier fighters in their prime(except I don’t consider Hatton that top tier). That gift decision to Diaz shouldn’t even count. Paulie is Camacho-esque without all the running. A decent fighter overall.

Maybe PM can occupy a larger plateau if he switch as boxing commentator. Maybe he can surpass Kellerman in(not sure with the spelling) in that particular job. Hey, how about dancing with star like V.Ortiz.

Chicago Guy sayd, “PM has to improve his punching power.” Thanks for your insight Eienstein.

Tumbo has a Johnson for Bernstein!

Hes been a very good fighter, but hes an excellent commentator. I usually agree with his analysis and hes very good at explaining whats going through a fighters mind. He is a terrible judge though.

Paulie was/is as game as they come but his limitations became evident years ago. however, i do enjoy his ringside commentary a lot more than everyone else’s with the exception of Bernstein and Tarver but IMO, he’s on their level. if his current plateau coincides with this entry into ringside commentator, Paulie should be congratulated for having his cake and preparing to eat it too.

Paulie plateaued in 2006, why is this suddenly news?

Posted March 6, 2013 10:16 am

Big Foot

Malignaggi would have a higher ko ratio if he had done more padding with glass jawed stiffs earlier when he was starting his career (Look at Wilder’s opponents for example).

Cesar Cuena? never seen him, must be a pretty tricky boxer.

Ever look at the boxrec ratings? There’s an Argentine who’s 43-0 with just 1 ko. I wonder if that’s some feather fist record.

PM need to improve his punching power.

I wish everyone would just hold the titles at wbc, wba, ibf at most. Not like the good ‘oldays……..Damn’t, young punk whippersnappers.

Diego chaves vs Keith Thurman the winner gets Paulie Magic man.

Weak WW champ with no power. Perfect opponent for Broner.

Big respect for Malignaggi after finishing the Cotto fight. Odd how some talk about fighters who put everything on the line in the ring, and in this case make a good showing for themselves.

“he can always find work as an eyebrow model or audition for the next casting call of Jersey Shore.” – Evidently you forgot what separates us commentators on the rail from the actual writers at the website. Now I know why they didn’t give you a byline.

Hard to believe he’s been pro 13 years now. Don’t care what you say he’s a game fighter who backs down to nobody and got maximum results from his talent. Unlike most light hitters he doesn’t run and makes for an entertaining fight.

Posted March 6, 2013 1:02 am

I have never been a fan of Malignaggi’s…but to achieve what he has with absolutely zero punching power I think deserves more credit then some of you are giving the guy in all fairness…not to mention the fact that he survived 12 rounds against Cotto when Cotto was destroying guys at 140. Like him or not, Paulie has always been game and willing to fight even though he lost at the top level….and he is a tough kid.

This article had no objectivity and the last statement summed up the bias. I did not see the writers name attached??

Posted March 6, 2013 12:29 am

Is paulie worth buying garbage hbo? no. he is espn at best. mickey ward vs Emanuel burton was great!! paulie is not near that. por man Camacho and that is a big reach. Camacho fought.

Posted March 6, 2013 12:19 am

He has definitely plateued but that does not mean he still can’t compete and win. Like the post below his only problem was his brittle hands and lack of punching power. He has good boxing skills and a good jab. Hoping he can make a few more bucks in the game

Posted March 5, 2013 11:06 pm

What’s all this hate on Paulie. He wasn’t blessed with much more than brittle hands, a good chin, and a ton of heart yet he will get in there with anyone and will not quit. He has my respect for making something out of himself, which is a lot more than most of the people hath on him.

Posted March 5, 2013 10:33 pm

Minor leaguer, with two world titles in two divisions?? I understand things are a bit diluted these days but those are two world straps. I understand some people think he talks too much or got a gift in his last go, but he’s got two straps…have I mentioned that?? Magic Man highlights….took ENORMOUS leap up in comp and fought a MONSTEROUS 140 pounder named Cotto, making a name for himself throughout. Cotto bragged about PM afterward…later won the 140 pound strap….beat Juan Diaz TWO TIMES…went to 47 and TKO’d Senchenko, and, absolutely nobody thought he’d do that!! Give the overachieving master-boxer the respect he deserves!!

every dog has its day hatton stopped Paulie then Paulie beat that kid from the ukriane then that same kid from the ukraine that Paulie beat STOpped hatton Paulie has more heart and spirit then tinkhan will ever possess ( in spades) everything about Paulie extrudes the very spirit of BOXING he is why boxing survives !

Posted March 5, 2013 9:31 pm

Plateau? He never really peaked!

Posted March 5, 2013 9:15 pm

Paulie is like Camacho without the punch . He is an espn level fighter at best, which is more than I could do. After a past prime hatton beat him around the ring stopping him, the writing was on the wall. He did win a belt in the Ukraine. He will be remembered for dressing like a fruit more than anything, then again he is from fruity new York city, home of mayor “do not drink big sodas” Bloomberg. I would like to see pauli against a litsau or a journeyman Mexican on ESPN.
