After Matthysse-Garcia went 12, like I said it would—you said it was going to be a KO—you asked if I predicted that because of the glove size… That showed me right there you don’t know a lot—because 2 oz of glove size is not going mean you’re going to get KO’d if you’re a real good fighter … That’s just a fact.

Mayweather strikes me as an Aero kind of guy. It wouldn`t be easy, but I do a lot of crossfit, I can bench some pretty good numbers so I am confident I have the raw power to force two Aero’s, a Yorkie and half a packet of twiglets past Floyds cheeks

He fought Trout. Trout weighed 171 and handled Cotto quite easily. AT was too big and strong for MC.

Canelo won’t have problems with middleweights because he’ll be fresher. If he stays at 154 he’ll get killed. 1st by the scales, then by his opponent when he gasses.

The fans vote for Mayweather/Maidana and the journalists are exploiting their platform and calling for Mayweather/Khan?

The “fans” want to see fighters in fights based on “merit” whilst the journalists beat the drum of the networks and promoters.

I have a feeling this will be Canelo’s last fight at 154. I feel bad for him because I don’t think he will be elite at 160. GGG will eat his food.

both men looked horribly dehydrated at yesterday’s weigh in…I saw Virgil having to hold up his fighter when he thought the cameras weren’t on him.

This fight is going to be brutal…the loser is more than likely getting stopped by a left hook to the liver, if yesterday’s weigh in is any indication.

Posted March 8, 2014 12:41 pm

Joseph Herron

there was a monetary agreement made before the weigh-in from Team Canelo to Team Angulo in the amount of $100K for the increased weight limit of 155 pounds.

Also, Virgil Hunter made a stipulation in the agreement that Canelo cannot weigh in greater than 168 pounds at a “next day” weigh in, which takes place at 3PM PST tomorrow.

If Canelo weighs in larger than 168 pounds, another monetary penalty will have to be made to Team Angulo.

That’s the news

Posted March 7, 2014 9:55 pm

I hope Canelo dies not try and show up and blow up to 165 or GOD forbid 168. He always likes to pull that stunt

Angulo has to protect his eye tonight or it could be an early stoppage.

Smart more from Mr Hunter to collect fines after what we all watched last week in the ring.

Alvarez must have a problem with food and diet and distance running:

– Alvarez is only 23 years old
– Alvarez is only 5’7″

How is it possible that he cannot make 154 ?????

What this means is by the time Alvarez is 30 years old he will be fighting at 168 — and given his height that doesn’t make any sense.

This is a young guy … he should change his diet and increase his long distance running and try to live all year round at 158-160 and then easily get down 154 if not 147.

He is too young and too short for these types of problems. There are guys like Hopkins and Mayweather and the Klitschkos who stay in shape every day all year round and they have great weights given their age and height.

This kid is eating the wrong types of food.

Posted March 8, 2014 9:05 am

HOPING LEO SANTA CRUZ performs well again against Mijares. Santa Cruz has a real good work ethic and fights 3-4 times a year and basically does everything old school as he’s moved through the weights and dedicates and fights for his brother who has a serious illness.

He is a young and very likeable man, who speaks good English and this year with big fights in the pipeline vs the likes of Carl Frampton he is on the way to hopefully become a star and is my favourite fighter to watch as he gives 100% and never tries to bring excuses.

Posted March 8, 2014 7:59 am

I HAVE ALWAYS had a real issue with these weigh-ins 24-36 hours before the actual fight and I have come up with a suggestion which I would be interested in hearing other ESB posters and those with an influence within the game viewpoints.

The easiest way to kill all the drama regarding weigh-ins, whilst still creating all the hype is to have a live check-weigh-in either the day before the fight or two days before, where both fighters should weigh-in, say no more than 2 pounds above the stipulated limit. (This can be negotiable on a sliding scale, if medical bodies can get behind what is a reasonable percentage 2 days out)?

This way we will be able to know just which fighters are playing fair and like in the case of a Castillo, a Guzman or a Broner, which fighter is cheating to win!!!!

There will be more drama as this will create news, create a buzz and is actually fairer to all parties, because we will then have the Official weigh-in on the morning of the fight, which was the traditional and fairest thing to do!

It will show who is working properly for the fight and it will stop the last second brinksmanship for people to get angles on the fight.

I wish someone puts this forward to the organisations, because us fight fans will then get what we want. More transparency over the fighters and their attempts or non attempts at making weight.

The sanctions for not making these limits should be a one year blanket ban across all organisations so a fighter who doesn’t make weight cannot fight for any version of a title for a year – maybe a little harsh, but will focus their minds.

After Floyd toys with Maidana (I hope Maidana wins…) will Floyd Fight Angulo or will he duck him just like what he did to Margarito? I believe Angulo is 5x Margarito… given that Floyds next fight is on September, it will be a big mexican event,

Posted March 8, 2014 4:23 am

Giving how relaxed Angulo is, the fight will be a lot closer than the result will suggest but it’s still going to be a victory for Canelo at the end of the day.

Posted March 8, 2014 4:00 am

Who cares?

Angulo’s game isn’t built on beating a boxer?! Right. That’s why he was thrashing Erislandy Lara for the majority of their fight. Lara, in my opinion, is a faster and superior boxer to Canelo. If Angulo was able to do that to Lara he should have great success against Canelo too.

Keep in mind, aside from Trout, Canelo’s only fought blown up junior welters & welterweights! I think Angulo is a very live underdog who can upset Canelo. Canelo isn’t as quick, clever, or mobile as Lara, and he doesn’t pack the punch Kirkland does. Canelo hasn’t been hit the way Angulo’s gonna be hitting him.

Posted March 8, 2014 3:48 am

They should fine fighters half their purse without any questions asked fro not making the contracted weight. Plain pathetic and a professional boxer can’t make weight. The real fighter slike Duran, Leonard. Hearns, Hagler, Cuevas, Benitez Arguello were the true fighters that would cut off their legs to make weight., Today they are just a bunch of spoiled brats that can pay off the weight they can’t make. Pathetic!

Posted March 8, 2014 3:31 am

Tark, Khan has been KOd once, and TKOd once. That’s it. He would have beat Peterson if he wouldn’t have been penalized two points for “pushing”, which if I remember correctly, you said were BS calls by Ref Cooper in that fight. Regardless, now way Cooper should have taken another point from Khan in the 12th. That was just low.

As for your other candidates who you think would knock Khan “out cold” Bradley ain’t one of them and neither is Kell Brook. Neither is Adrien Broner and if Khan kept to boxing and didn’t try to slug it out with him, he’d beat Matthysse too. Thurman would most definitely be a dangerous opponent for Khan as Thurman has faced a number of top guys and beat them and he’s knocked out just about everyone he’s fought. But Porter has a much weaker resume, and nowhere near the KO percentage as Thurman. Porter needs to beat more than Alexander or get a decision win over Diaz (after fighting to a draw in their first fight) to prove he can KO Khan. Ain’t gonna happen anytime soon. And saying Danny Garcia would KO Khan is redundant. Already happened, remember?

As for a fight with Manny Pacquiao? Well, there’s another fight that isn’t going to happen, so it’s not worth thinking about.

Posted March 8, 2014 3:24 am

Herron.., “How many fighters at 147 pounds currently are bigger ticket sellers and more widely recognized than Amir Khan?” … Recognized for what??? Getting KTFO???

Tim Bradley… Manny Pacquiao… Shawn Porter… Adrien Broner… Keith Thurman… Danny Garcia… Lucas Matthysse… and Kell Brook would all knock Amir Khan flat out cold … The fans would appreciate Floyd fighting one of them… Plus, they all know Khan ducked the Alexander fight because it would put a dagger in his fight with Floyd when he got knocked out again.

“*No, it was JJM’s outfit for not reading the small print. ”

Incorrect. The contract was hastily modified and/or rewritten to allow Mayweather to blow his weight for his fight with Marquez. Marquez’s team didn’t misread any fine print. That’s the deal they made when Floyd decided not to make weight.

Posted March 8, 2014 2:38 am

This isn’t even worth discussing any longer….how many fighters at 147 pounds currently are bigger ticket sellers and more widely recognized than Amir Khan.

That’s the only thing that seems to matter any more in the entertainment industry that is boxing.

Why do you think Canelo isn’t facing Lara instead of Angulo?

Do you think it has anything to do with the fighter that’s more deserving?

No…so put this to rest, brother!!

Posted March 8, 2014 2:13 am

Pundit.., “draining down to 154 to fight mostly welterweights isn’t going to work too much longer.”

Austin Trout wasn’t a welterweight… He weighed into the ring at 171 — as undefeated Jr Middleweight Champion who’s previous bout was a 118-110 Shellacking of Miguel Cotto — who is now challenging for the middleweight title.

But the weight is a problem for Canelo. He’s killing himself to make 154. You get to the point where your body won’t give up the weight and you wreck your ability to perform.

It’s much better to have enough energy to fight—and fight bigger guys—than not being active enough to win a fight.

1. What weight might that be? 140lb or 147lbs?

The reasoning behind my question being he hasn’t fought at 147lbs and his last two “wins” were against career “135lb” fighters … right?

So, he is either worthy of Mayweather or ….. Luis Collazo?

Eddie Hearn went on record and offered him $5mil to fight Kell Brook at 147lb? Mayweather went copy and offered him Broner for what would be a better payday than Collazo, Molina and Diaz put together?

We know Oscar couldn’t sell a ticket and gave them away for Xmas toys because that’s how bad Khan’s stock was, is and is even worse now.

So, in answer to your original question Joseph.

No way in hell do I think Khan deserves or do his people believe he has a chair at the top table and his avoidance of a challenge, which will be announced soon will be the proof of that.

If Khan and his people believed he was ready for Floyd at 147lbs, as do you and your guests, then he, they and you should have been selling Broner/Khan Brook/Khan and no one else … right;-)

My best mates dad back in England was a man named Frank Clough …. Sports Journalist back in the day and you couldn’t buy the grumpy old Northern bastard an ale in the pub let alone a fluffy PR piece for a ringside seat in a 3mil a day tabloid newspaper ;-)

We both know what Khan’s all about Joseph ;-)

Good call, Brother Gonzo. I was off by 1 lb regarding Canelo, so maybe my memory is starting to slip a bit. 3G has never re-hydrated to over 170lbs because he’s a small MW and could easily make 154lbs. That’s why FMJ needs to man-up and defend the Jr. MW titles against either GGG or Lara. And you and I know that 3G would destroy all these cats at 154, 160 and likely even 168lbs. Yeah… I said it! 3G will beat Ward’s @$$ too.

Our last conversation was regarding Khan being the best fight for Mayweather?

You and your guests, championed the “lucrative” aspect of match making?

Forget that Khan never deserved the fight and Maidana did having worked hard his whole life, robbed against Kotelnik, unlucky because Khan had Cortez in his corner that night, you and your guests still tried to sell Mayweather/Khan for money even though “the fans” voted against it and we all know that off the back of Molina and Diaz and two defeats, plus the fact he only ever has 3 rounds in him, NEVER earned the right to step foot in the ring with a fighter like Mayweather?

It ain’t all about money Joseph and Hunter already showed his and Angulo’s hand.

Angulo re-hydrated to 173 or 174lbs vs. Lara. Wow! That’s 20 pounds over 154! Canelo walked into the ring weighing 165lbs in his last fight and has only entered the ring once over 170lbs. That contract should stipulate that neither fighter can weigh over 168lbs tomorrow afternoon. Otherwise Perro would come in at over 170lbs. Some might say that both men should be fighting at Super MW. But cutting weight and re-hydrating has always been a BIG part of boxing and wrestling.

*No, it was JJM’s outfit for not reading the small print.

Notice how the gentleman on top (the giver) keeps adjusting his hind legs all the time, constantly resetting them and spreading them as wide as possible in order to gain maximum leverage so that he can really sink it in plums deep up the other gentleman’s (the receiver) backdoor.

Saul will be easy work for Alfredo. KO in 5. All my haters will be singing the praise of the greatest fight prophet EVER born.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. LionKing)

Titopa: Do you have proof that Team Canelo came to Team Angulo a few hours before weigh-ins and said: “I can’t make the weight, I need an extra pound.” Didn’t think so, big mouth. For all we know, Angulo wouldn’t have been able to make the weight limit irregardless. After all, Angulo re-hydrated to 173lbs vs. Lara. The heaviest Canelo has ever been is 171lbs — and that was to fight the naturally bigger Trout. I don’t like the fact that neither fighter made weight, but if they agreed on 155lbs, then so be it. It’s not like this a world championship fight and the major titles are the on the line. Clearly, there’s a lot of anti-Canelo bias going on here. If you say that Canelo should move up to MW, then why wouldn’t you say the exact same about Perro???

I do want to make it clear however that if you are signed for a fight to make weight, you should since both parties have to do it and it is unfair for one to make the mark but the other doesn’t (and sometimes on purpose).

In addition, stop fighting in a weight division where you are struggling to make weight. If you are dehydrating yourself more than 7 pounds, move UP.

People are amazed about all these guys winning titles (and not even fighting the best in the division) in several weight classes but what about Men like Sam Langford who was fighting whoever wanted to fight. My Man was fighting Heavyweights.

Who cares and just get on with the fight..may the best man win

AGREE, there was a time when Men just fought. Floyd can talk about P4P this, P4P that, but let’s see him do what the old timers did like Sam Langford and just fight.

These weight things need to be stopped though. Now both fighters didn’t make 154 so maybe it was originally at 155. But if not they need to start to doing something more strict when you fail to make weight

I’m upset that the Molina vs Chatlo fight isn’t happening.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. LionKing) – Well when the other guy comes at you hours before the weight in and says “I can’t make the weight, I need an extra pound”, why would you continue cutting the extra half pound if you intend on fighting? Duh!

Angulo came in over the 154lbs limit as well, so no need to point fingers here. Sounds like both fighters are fine with it.

Angulo is taking him out even if Canelo weighs 250 pounds; it won’t make a difference.

Wow! Chavez Jr. all over again…if I were Angulo I would’ve said “hell nah, make weight or I won’t fight”.

Was it always at a catch-weight? Or did that suddenly come up?
