The reason Gerber was considered a “prospect” by the Germans was his age. When he came onto the scene several years ago (after KO 2 of Rene Dettweiller) he was just 21 and showed good power in his punches. In the years that followed he won fights but did nothing to build on his strengths, and you see the result: still no head movement, standing in front of his opponent, robotic fighting style, losing rounds as he goes only for big punches, etc. Now at 25 with 2 losses he doesn’t look like a prospect. He’s still pretty good for age 25 but if the next four years show the same lack of development as the last four, he’s not going anywhere.

Shame Saunders has no power, his KO percentage is bordering on just 50% and will probably drop as the fights continue. If he was a banger he’d be a great prospect but you can imagine the big hitting middleweights walking through his feather fisted punches and knocking him out.

I ain’t got no beef with chisora, I kinda like him, he comes to fight and normally gives a good account of himself in the ring…he looked sharp last night and up for it.
But I was not impressed with gerber at all, I had not seen him box before , to be honest I,d never even heard of him before…I now know the reason why.
For the first three or four rounds he allowed chisora to walk up to him and place his head on his chest and whale away at the body, and head with hooks and uppercuts….time and time again, totally unopposed.
Derek was able to get in some good shots on gerber , softening him up for the later stoppage.
Poor tactics and a poor showing from gerber and his team.
Fair play to chisora for making the most of it , he started the fight quick, strong and determined…..so thumbs up from me.
Wonder who is next for Derek?

Huckster, regardless of how both fighters fared against Vitali, I think its fair to say that Charr would have proven a much stiffer test than Gerber……but then again almost everyone in the top 25 would probably be better than Gerber!

Posted September 22, 2013 7:09 pm

huckster

Chisora can be happy he fought Gerber, not Charr??? Charr got his faced kicked in by vitali. Chisora went the distance.

If David Price don’t fancy it then how about Chisora/Helinius II? & if Saunders/Macklin can’t be made what about B.J.S/Ryder II?

I watched the Saunders – Ryder fight and I had it a close win for Saunders. He connected more over the fight. Close fight but the judges got it right.

Chisora can be happy he fought Gerber, not Charr.

Mr Gav

Yep there credible fights for wilder not exactly pushing the boat out but its a good start before moving up to the better fighters

Posted September 22, 2013 2:57 pm

KL

Chauncey Welliver, Dominick Guinn & Tony Thompson have been mentioned by Deas (Wilder’s manager). Weliver has only been Koed once in 67 contests and Guinn never been Koed in 45 fights, so I think both these guys will be good stepping stones for Wilder. If Wilder does manage to continue his KO streak against either of these 2 then surely Wilder will get a bit more respect than he currently gets.

Posted September 22, 2013 2:31 pm

mr gav

Yeah Gerber did just stand there and not even try to finish off chisora. Wilder has killer instinct and power. I would like to see wilder in more meaningfully fights after 29 bums he’s ready forsone top 20 guys at least

Posted September 22, 2013 2:07 pm

Cognitor

i know there are a lot of Wilder nuthuggers around here but I’ll say this, i would love to see a fight between Wilder and Tyson Fury. I bet you that these two off balanced boxers would roll all over the floor several times befor the end of 10 rounds if it lasts that long. They are two of the most poorly balanced boxers I have seen for many years. I don’t know what it is but maybe those skinny legs can’t hold the two of them up. I can see the stones coming now from the Wilder hangons.

Posted September 22, 2013 1:43 pm

KL

Wilder still has a lot of doubters but I’ve seen enough of Wilder to know that Wilder is leagues above Gerber. If Wilder with his faster hand speed could hurt Chisora like Gerber did last night there is no question that Wilder would have gone all out to try and finish Chisora, unlike Gerber who just let Chisora run to the other side of the ring out of his reach.

Posted September 22, 2013 1:42 pm

Mr Gav

KL, I find bouncey is very biast towards box nation fighters he is very quick to slag of Ricky burns who left for match room (but had a point) I don’t tend to listen to bouncey but will be interested in who chisora will fight next he got good exposure in Germany but anyone with any boxing knowledge will know that chisora is at best a gate keeper. But wilder would be fun

Posted September 22, 2013 1:34 pm

KL

Gav, last night’s fight was probably the first time that Gerber got any exposure on non German tv, and despite briefly hurting Chisora, I somehow doubt too many international tv networks would be willing to show case any future Gerber fights.
Buncey spouted his usual BS last night by saying Chisora’s performance just sent out a big statement to the world (of boxing presumably!)…….did it heck!!!

Posted September 22, 2013 12:50 pm

Mr Gav

I can see how Gerber was out pointed by sprott, I just don’t see how the Germans see him as a prospect? He would make a good come back fight for price though and if audley Harrison ever fancies a W on his record he knows where to go. Chisora looked in good shape he is Britain’s 3rd best chance for a heavy weight world champion if he keeps getting hand pick oppenants chisora could get into title contentisdion.

Posted September 22, 2013 12:20 pm

Vlad the Impaler

huckster, I agree. That crazy SOB probably would step in and fight Fury! Lol! However, I feel like Chisora and Arreola are just entertaining gate keepers. Neither will ever be world champion. Chisora proved Malik Scott is going nowhere. Arreola showed Stiverne is a force to be reckoned with.

Posted September 22, 2013 12:16 pm

KL

knowall you say: “Děl boy looked good. Perhaps oné of the most impressive times ive seen him.”———–

I’m not so convinced about him looking good last night. Gerber was one of the poorest fighters I’ve seen on a main event in a while.
I mean he just stood in the middle of the ring and let Chisora swing at him, Gerber was like a statue, no movement whatsoever. I didn’t think Choisora was too much better, apart from the fact that he fired off many more shots, to a stationary target and was the better conditioned.
Everyone seems to have glossed over the fact that Chisora got hurt by Gerber, and it was only Gerber’s lack of energy to follow up that saved Chisora from taking more punishment in that round.
impressive win…….I don’t think so………. If any of the top boxers heavies in the world were watching, which I doubt, then I doubt if they were impressed with either Gerber or Chisora last night.

Off subject: Happy Birthday to one of the UK’s finest welterweights John H.Stracey! Born on 22nd September 1950. Against all the odds he travelled to Mexico city in 1976 & KO’ed Jose Napoles (the #1 @ 147Lb since “Suger”Ray Robinson) to capture the championship of the World!!……….

“Funtime” Frankie Gavin’s not doing himself any favours by fighting solely in the UK. He needs to get on a few undercards in the USA to push his name around. The only fight in Europe for him is EBU champion Leonard Bundu, which won’t happen due to Bundu’s reluctance to fight outside of Italy.
Does anyone know if Alexander/Khan has been signed yet?

Posted September 22, 2013 9:10 am

Leonard

I felt BJS won by wider margins than the judges.
Am I in a minority? It looks that way.

Can’t say it was BJS best performance by any means, but he for me he was well over the very ordinary Ryder…..I suspect BJS is no fan of the hard grind of training…..and that could be his downfall. That and his lack of a punch.

I can’t see any great success ahead for Ryder at all…maybe I’m missing something but I’m not sold on Ryder at all…..ok he is tough fit and determined and benefits from having an awkward southpaw style that opponents find hard to deal with.
But beyond that Ryder not particularly great at all that much as far as I can see….hasn’t got particularly good size height, reach, speed, can’t change gears….lacks power..no great jab, zero head movement….far too easy to hit…..although roughly half the punches he does take are thrown by….HIMSELF… what’s with that silly “nervous habit” he has…constantly hitting the left side of his face with his own left glove!!! Anybody else see that? Weird…

British people would have you believe that Gavin is world class, the guy is not even European champion class, he was calling out that other big mouth Khan, i don`t like Khan, but he is streets above this guy. My little sister punches harder than Gavin.

Posted September 22, 2013 8:10 am

Mr Gav

I don’t think Ryder was robbed the fight was very close,Ryder was not hurt once in the fight and finished strong where Saunders was holding on in the last round and was hurt a few times. But Saunders pace in the mid rounds was where he scored the points making Ryder miss and using his counters to good effort. If Ryder fought a higher tempo early on he would of got the decision or even stopped Saunders. Though he lost I think he looks the better prospect just a lack of big fights was the key tonight. Give it a few fights time and Ryder will KO Saunders

The BBBofC have some easy decisions regard the sanctioning of British title defences now. David Price VS Derreck Chisora, Stephen Smith VS Liam Walsh & Paul Smith VS Rocky Fielding. All good unification match ups!

I was at the copperbox last night and it was a real shame the main event was so late the arena wasn’t full to start with but many ppl left without seeing the last fight bjs has since posted a picture on twitter of his left hand that he says he injured in the 3rd rnd don’t know how much difference that made as Ryder is tough I had the fight a draw , Derek chisora didn’t celebrate to much last night because George kean who was making his debut was already in the ring for his fight before chisora had even left ! I don’t think they really gave him a chance , the whole card was hashed together not in any particular order which was a shame but I think the team behind the card are more interested in selling tv subscriptions than tickets now !

Chisora is a game guy and a tough fight for anyone out there. He beat Helinious by a country mile, gave Vitali a tough time, and was pretty competative with Haye up until his KO. The Fury fight was a bad night for him but I dont think Fury is a no mug. Im not saying he will ever be anything other than a gate keeper to a title shot for other heavy weights, but he’ll give s an entertaining night and may even suprise a few,

“Gerber didn’t have the mobility, conditioning or the power to move in and finish Chisora off the way that someone like David Haye or Deontay Wilder would have done.” Really? Could you tell me in which fight Wilder displayed this mobility and conditioning? You’re effectively negatively comparing the conditioning of a fighter who’s gone 12 rounds with a world champion to the conditioning of a fighter who chooses opponents that won’t require him to fight for more than 2 or 3 rounds.

Posted September 22, 2013 4:26 am

Rocky Fielding should be matched with Paul Smith next.

Funny how Wilder seems to polarize people, either he is the best in the division or he’s a total fraud!
I’m in between, sure we all like to see how Wilder fares with the bigger names……..but I don’t subscribe to the “total fraud” view, to me there is enough emerging evidence to suggest that Wilder is not a fraud……..whether he is the next heavyweight champ remains to be seen, but I don’t think Wilder will fold against the first big name he comes up against, as some say he will.

Posted September 21, 2013 9:19 pm

A. GOD…I agree with you,Wilder is still a ?. He might be the Sonny Liston of this era or the Jack Johnson of this era. But he might be the big guy that drowns in deep waters when really tested in this era.Untill theres a real live wire test,I cant say hes the next great one…only time and a real test will show us who he really is….lets see.

Posted September 21, 2013 9:07 pm

KL

Back to Chisora, sure he felt sad for his lost pal Dean Powell, but Chisora didn’t celebrate much having won the Euro belt probably because he knows that Gerber was poor……….so that in itself devalues the Eurobelt.
European Champion should mean “best in Europe”……..but we all know that Chisora is far from the best in Europe having beaten a guy that most of todays’ prospect would easily beat too.

Posted September 21, 2013 8:53 pm

Mr Gav

A close fight I had Saunders win too. But Saunders did look vunrable especially in the last round where he was hugging to survive and also showed a lack of power Ryder has a good chin though. But saying that Saunders is now ready to move on from the domestic seen and ready to mix it with some of the other contenders I would fancy him to beat Macklin at this stage he has the skills to go far. As for Ryder he looked good showed some power good chin and stamina he is ready to be the next top dog in this very exciting domestic seen. Good fight

115-113, 115-113 and 115-114 all for Saunders. Ryder can come again though.

Saunders is just not hurting Ryder but he has great skills though. If he can get through tonight he will struggle against the top guys as his lack of power will be a big factor. He’s winning this fight though

I’ve not seen Perez since his prize fighter win a few years ago really thought he would be a real force by now but if he beats mago and that’s a if as Perez fights don’t seem to happen for some reason then Perez can get back on the seen. Gav, Mike Perez look somewhat labored and lacking in power when he took on Travis Walker earlier this year………I hope he gets in better shape and form when he fights Mago in November……..because Perez should easily outbox Mago………but Perez needs to find his form again, and pretty quick too.

Frankie Gavins win over David Barnes was aterrible fight and lets hope thats down to a clash of styles. Gavin should have upped the tempo. Both southpaws which must have thrown them both off having boxed more orthodox fighters in the past. Also good win for Walsh. I favoured Murray to win but good one for Liam.
