If Canelo does not at anytime let MW breathe, he can win.

Boxtra…. “I’ll add those guys to the list of those who didn’t have ultimate confidence in their SKILLS. Thats why they had to bolster their confidence with a weight advantage on Fight night.”

Michael Spinks needed a weight advantage??? He weighed 190.. He either fought as a great LHW or face the Mike Tyson’s of the world at a pumped up poundage.

Monzon weighed about 173… The 168-pound division had nobody in it worth fighting at that time.. He would have been crazy to fight OVER his natural weight… The middleweight division was the best fit.

“Jesus turned water into WINE and Floyd turns CHAMPS into CHERRIES.” What’s with all the religious analogies lately? They still don’t qualify your posts. Floyd turns some of his opponents into ex-champions. But lots of fighters do. Other than that, Floyd doesn’t turn any opponent into anything than he already was. Go ahead, claim he turns them into losers. In all of his professional career, Floyd has turned only two undefeated fighters into losers: Hatton and Corrales. Every other opponent he has faced–in any weight division–had already lost to someone else by the time they faced Floyd.

Floyd isn’t a cherry picker. He’s a cherry MAKER. Jesus turned water into WINE and Floyd turns CHAMPS into CHERRIES. He turns Top 10 P4P Fighters into cherries TOO. Floyd is the Jesus of Boxing. IF you want to be turned into a cherry FACE Floyd

Canelo is the young cherry picker vs the old cherry picker, battle of cherry land, lets see if they will bore us to death

Boxtra… Carlos Monzon, Michael Spinks, Carlos Ortiz, and many more of history’s greatest boxers went through the dehydration and rehydration regimen for many years… It’s part of the game and doesn’t reflect on your boxing skills.

It’s a matter of fighting in the division where you can win. Also a matter of taking the most lucrative fights out there, that you believe you can win.

Broner certainly had a tough time making 130, or even 135… But he still needed to win titles at those weights… Malignaggi was an easy fight at 147 … so he jumped up 2 weight divisions — just like Guerrero, Duran, Mosley, and many other boxers have done when they saw better names and richer fights … at higher weights then where they were fighting at the time.

Posted July 17, 2013 5:11 pm

even though Floyd’s boxing ability has some what slipped , I am of the opinion that Canelo will be lucky to even win 1 round. I like Floyd by a wide U.D.

Posted July 17, 2013 4:35 pm

“Trainers have their boxers fight at the weight they feel they can best compete at.”-Well IF their trainer thinks that the Fighter competes BEST at a certain weight then the onus is now on the Boxer to stay around that weight. IF he can’t stay around that weight year ROUND then he’d better move UP. Again the BEST Fighters in the World and throughout History don’t boil down and blow back UP. SO IF you have to DO that then you’re probably not very GOOD.

Posted July 17, 2013 1:42 pm

TJ-THANKS. All you have to DO is look at the Fighters at the TOP of the Sport. Its not full of guys who boil down and then blow back UP. You can even go back throughout History. The BEST Fighters Fight around their walk around weight. Its common sense to ME. Can’t believe that there’s SO many people out there that can’t see it….IF you want to be the BEST you have to also learn from your PEERS. Let their experiences help tell you what TO do and what NOT to DO……..Look at what Rigo just DID to Donaire. Rigo isn’t a guy that boils down and blows back UP. He stays around his walk around weight. Donaire walks around at 145. He should either be Fighting at 140 or 147 or keep himself around 122 all of the time….and Canelo should be Fighting at 160-168….or keep himself around 154 all the time. Learn from the BEST.

Mayweather-Guerrero was boring because Guerrero lacks a stance, a defense, or any effective weapons…

Guerrero beat Berto by dint of Greco-Roman wrestling… thumb strikes to both eyes… flagrant holding and hitting… brawling… illegal use of the head… steer wrestling… and punching after the bell.

Robert Byrd didn’t let Guerrero do those things to Floyd… Even when Guerrero had a hand free, and had every RIGHT to punch, Byrd screamed, “NO NO NO NO NO” and physically broke those non-clinches. “LET GO.. let him up.. let him out.. back out.. back up.. back out.. back out.. back OUT.”

It was like saying to Robert.., “This is gonna be a boxing match.”

Canelo boxes… He’s not a brawler like RG.

Posted July 17, 2013 11:51 am

Guerrero was already a dead fighter when he fought Floyd that’s why they call him the GHOST….BUT Guerreo is a BORN AGAIN CHRISTAN WHO JUST WANTED TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL FOR 12 ROUNDS AND Floyd WAS ALL JUBILANT THAT HE GOT THE BORING D.

Posted July 17, 2013 2:20 am

Guys like Floyd, Manny, and the Klitschkos stay around their Fight night weight year ROUND……

I had the same conversation with Cornelius Boza-Edwards a couple of years back when I talked to him about his own brilliant career… He was always in sahpe and never more than a few pounds off his fighting weight between fights….

He now keeps fit by running and if i remember rightly he runs marathons!

It makes no sense for me for a fighter, let alone a normal couch potato to balloon up in weight between bouts (but when these modern day jokers only fight once or twice a year – you can see how easily they do)!!!

Training camp should be for sharpening skills, strategies and working on shortcomings….
A famous trainer once said that his fighters should really arrive at a camp in shape!

I totally agree!

Exiled Yank

I don’t think the fight will be boring (considering I used to sell paint for a living and this sis require watching a lot of it dry) but I agree FM will take it by D. Canelo is big, young, strong, and is definitely skilled, but FM will simply be too good for him.

Floyd has the ability to wear down Canelo and TKO him late, Floyd is always in GREAT shape and his ring IQ is unmatched. The only thing to watch out for is, if Canelo gets in a lucky power shot and hurts Floyd, will he have the stamina to close the show, if not then Floyd will take a punched out Canelo into the deep, beat him up and TKO him late. IMHO.

Posted July 16, 2013 7:46 pm

@Tark hey man I really hope the fight plays out as youre predicting, youre making it one bad ass fight.

Also I agree with you about Canelo putting TOO MUCH sauce on Trout knocking him down. He let up on Trout for the rest of the fight and just boxed with him.

Posted July 16, 2013 7:45 pm

Anyone with some to very little boxing knowledge could have told you what Roach said, waste of a read.

Posted July 16, 2013 7:37 pm

“Those who are SISSYFIED try to get as MUCH of a weight advantage on Fight night as possible to compensate for their insecurity in their SKILL level…..”

This isn’t necessarily true at all. Trainers have their boxers fight at the weight they feel they can best compete at. If they can “boil down” to a certain weight and still fight successfully after rehydrating, then that’s a good weight for them to fight at. And if they rehydrate to a significantly heavier weight, so much the better for them, because along with that weight they may carry more power and more resilience. There’s nothing “sissified” about it. It’s all about getting the edge over the competition. Unfortunately, it’s usually the younger boxers who are able to still compete effectively while enduring such drastic weight swings. Generally speaking, as a boxer ages, it becomes harder and harder for him to continue that practice.

Right MEX, if Canelo gets a close win then he’ll lose by a split or majority dec.
That’s how it works, excepting Pacman/Bradley though for one.

Posted July 16, 2013 4:31 pm

Floyd had a “get punched in the snoot” strategy for Cotto.

Trout had a “box him dizzy and defend” strategy for Cotto

Canelo had a “defend and pot-shot” strategy against Trout.

Different strategies… Canelo was anxious to go 12 rounds with Trout to test his endurance against this caliber of youthful World Champion … but it almost didn’t work.. Saul almost accidentally knocked Trout out with that sizzling straight right hander… Almost put too much sauce on that one.

Posted July 16, 2013 3:31 pm

Funny that you say ran out of gas cause that also seemed like a problem for Canelo and he was only fighting for a minute of each round. Not to mention Floyd stood his ground with Cotto. Something Canelo didn’t do against Trout

Posted July 16, 2013 3:08 pm

Not only did Floyd received a lot of punches at 154 with the Cripple 50% of the fighter used to be but Floyd ran out of gas/stamina too, believed me Canelo is gonns be too much for the 36 year old Cherrypicker EXPERIENCE fighter.

Posted July 16, 2013 2:43 pm

I just love the fact that CANELO keeps his cool at press conferences…maybe he’ll get into PBF”s head like WEIDMAN got into SILVA in the UFC.

Posted July 16, 2013 2:40 pm

Roach also said that Manny was gonna KO Marquez the last time around but to Roach surprise Marquez came in as a TRUE welterweight and not as a Lightweight that Manny was used to fighting and in this case Roach doesn’t see the same for Floyd who is used to Cherrypickin on LIGHTERWEIGHTS.

Posted July 16, 2013 2:33 pm

Floyd by split decision….Canelo still will be boxing cash cow.

Posted July 16, 2013 2:16 pm

I LIKE day before the Fight weigh ins. I especially LIKE them in conjunction with Fight night weigh ins and walk around weights… IT instantly lets me know who has the most confidence in their SKILLS…..Those who have confidence in their SKILLS have no problem Fighting in a Division that is close to their walk around weight as Floyd and Pacquiao DO. Those who are SISSYFIED try to get as MUCH of a weight advantage on Fight night as possible to compensate for their insecurity in their SKILL level…..SO they boil down and then blow back UP to try their BEST to get to that 20 lb advantage on Fight night….OR they just don’t take their profession very seriously and they’re completely out of shape before training camp and therefore they have to LOSE a bunch of weight to get into shape… Guys like Floyd, Manny, and the Klitschkos stay around their Fight night weight year ROUND……You would think that all these LESSER Fighters or trainers would get a CLUE….The BEST Fighters don’t boil down and then blow back UP. That’s taxing on the body DUMMIES.

IF you want to be the BEST stay around your Fighting weight…….IF Canelo is 165 before training camp then he should be Fighting at MW or SMW… Mayweather already has an advantage going in to training camp because he can concentrate more on his SKILLS while you have to be concerned with losing weight which takes away time from you concentrating on your SKILLS. WIN or LOSE Canelo needs to leave 154 or take his craft more seriously and stay around 154 year ROUND. Don’t listen to the people around you that say its BETTER to maximize your Fight night weight instead of coming into camp around your weigh in weight where you can concentrate purely on maximizing your SKILL level…..They’re IDIOTS.

GOOD call by Roach. Just a few YEARS ago he criticized Mayweather saying he has no more legs. And now that HE and delusional followers have been proven WRONG they backtrack and re criticize him for being a boring RUNNER???? But how can a RUNNER RUN with NO legs???? HAHAHAHHAHAAA!!! SO if he WINS without a lot of movement his legs are POOR. But IF he WINS with movement his style is boring????……OK sir. THANKS for your input. We can CLEARLY see the bias. We appreciate you for your honesty.

Posted July 16, 2013 1:43 pm

LMFAO… Floyd will murder Canelo? Yeah sure he will… After all, he’s scored 2 KO’s in the last 7 years… Victor Ortiz he stopped with a “please-hit-me-again” punch. Ortiz was stopped by ww Josesito Lopez—not a bombardier of the highest order.

Ricky Hatton was put out on his feet by Luis Collazo—the softest hitter in Boxing History. If the referee didn’t allow 40 clinches in the last 2 rounds by Hatton, he would have been flattened. After the fight Ricky ruefully commented, “I’m not ready for the likes of Mayweather.” Some boxers are brutally honest right after a loss—at least more so then after they concoct a spin story.

Canelo is more likely to stop Floyd. He has a 20% chance. Floyd has a 5% chance, tops. The odds are 75% it’s a distance fight—and a breathtakingly suspenseful decision …. “THAAAHHH WIIINNNERRRR … AAAND

Posted July 16, 2013 11:19 am

Actually no Floyd’s weight would not be the same as it was when he fought Guerrero. Guerrero already fought a couple times at welter and he stayed. This will be much different. This will be the biggest guy Floyd faced. Now Gloyd chose it so whatever. Unfortunately it’s at a catch weight. But not even close to the same

Posted July 16, 2013 9:43 am

Stop going on about the weight disparity they are both light middle weight champions. Play by the same rules and fight at the same weight (even if it is a catch weight).

So one guy is naturally bigger? Personally I don’t care about that fair play to Mayweather for going up the divisions but dont go on like its unfair when he faces someone naturally bigger, cause thats what happens we you go from light weight to light middle weight!

Posted July 16, 2013 7:46 am

Canelo’s natural weight advantage over Floyd will be about the same as Floyd’s was over Guererro. Floyd didn’t stop that lightweight, so why in the world would anyone expect him to even try to stop a junior middleweight?

Posted July 16, 2013 7:32 am

I MEANT IF FLOYD STOPS CANELO it will be due to the accumulation of body shots throughout the contest…

If he is able to land often it will have an effect on Saul the longer the bout progresses and conversley you could say the same for Canelo…. He too will have to find a way to consiistently work Floyd’s mid-section.

As a 35 year old, you don’t want to absorb too much punishment downstairs either….

This will be a very interesting chess match, with a few flare ups thrown in for good measure!

Posted July 16, 2013 3:08 am

IF FLOYD STOPS CANELO IT WILL BE DUE T OBODY SHOTS – FLoyd should work him downstairs all through the fight ensuring he keeps touching him downstairs and hitting him with hard hooks whenever he gets the chance.

If Canelo has a stamina problem (which I don’t believe he has), this is the best way to empty his tank and to get him concentrating on his own defence, worrying about protecting his mid section from the next series of hard jabs or hooks coming his way!

Seriously, the only way to stop this disparity over fighters outweighing each other by up to 20 lbs on the night of the fight is to bring back SAME-DAY weigh-ins.

IMHO, this is truly the only FAIR way to ensure boxers are on the same-playing field….

Unless TARK and others come up with the evidence, from what i’ve seen, read and heard the so-called safety reasons (rehydration, reduction in brain injuries, concussions etc… etc….)
why we should have weigh-ins the day before etc. arte total bunkum.

The amount of boxing related deaths hasn’t gone down drastically since we had the strive for change with the death of DUK KOO KIM (RIP), with rounds cut from 15 to 12, review of the glove sizes, getting rid of same-day weigh-ins, now check weigh-ins at mandated times during the count-down to fights etc…etc… Nothing much has changed.

Bring back same-day weigh-ins and improve how fighters make weight properly and safely and we will get fairer boxing contests…..

Posted July 16, 2013 3:03 am

Yeah but does Roach knows that Canelo is NOT a Cherrypickin opponent this time for the CHERRYPICKER Floyd.

Posted July 16, 2013 2:41 am

Floyd number of KO’s in the last 7 years… Two (2)

Posted July 16, 2013 2:09 am

What numbers are you talking about saying numbers don’t lie?

Posted July 16, 2013 1:16 am

This fight WON’T be boring… It won’t be Ali-Lubbers… Ali Mathis… Ali-Young… Ali-Bugner… or Ali Evangelista… Those sleepy events won the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting non-violence in Boxing—and sportswriter Jim Murray’s column’s about them were more entertaining than the fights themselves.

This will be Larry Holmes vs Tim Witherspoon… Spoon was an inexperienced kid with only 7 amateur fights and 15 pro fights. But he was a great boxer/puncher … All the experts underestimated him.

Witherspoon said.., “I’ve been reading that garbage. Every writer in the USA expects Holmes to knock me out… But I can jab… I have a killer right hand… my left hook can cause your death… I’m tricky… I’m bigger and stronger, and punch harder than Holmes… Nobody in the world can hurt me… I’m real green—but I’ve been studying Holmes for years… I know exactly how to beat Larry… You fight him the way you fight Ali or any boxer … You tear after him and make him fight his ass off.”

That’s the same way Canelo will fight Floyd.

Posted July 16, 2013 12:41 am

Roach forgot to take his meds today. This is the same guy who told the World Pac Man was going to beat JMM, and what happend. Manny was put to sleep. He needs to train his fighters ans shut that front door.

Mayweather is not going to KO Canelo. Google FMJ boxing record. Nonlogical fans make up stories and lie, numbers don’t.

Posted July 16, 2013 12:35 am

Who was Floyd last six opponents, Marquez hasn’t been stopped, Guerrero hasn’t been stopped, Ortiz been stopped and was stopped, Hatton hadn’t been stopped until Mayweather. De La Hoya only stopped by Hopkins a Middle and Manny while weight drained. Baldimur Not sure about his record and Judah has been stopped by Tsyzu and Khan( in my opinion a low blow over looked), Mosley Never been stopped. Mayweather had been fighting Top level fighter without weight limitation. When operationing at that level the KO’s become few and far inbetween. Will he KO Canelo in my opinion nope he will win a UD.

I don’t think folks are saying he is going to KO Floyd, but they think Floyd stops him because of Canelos stamina issues. Which is definitely what I think. He will be stopped, either the ref or the corner steps in

Posted July 15, 2013 11:42 pm

I doubt there is anyone south of 147 who could KO JMM Manny tried how MANY times and FAILED ……

Posted July 15, 2013 11:09 pm

For a guy whose only had 1 knockout in 6 YEARS(Hatton), some of you guys put alot of faith in mayweather ko’ing alvarez. Ortiz fight was a sucker punch.. Even Malignagi has more tkos. I might even call mayweather feather fisted

Floyd is gonna run, you fools!!!! He is not gonna try to KO Canelo.

Posted July 15, 2013 10:16 pm

Sauls only chance at defeating Junior is EARLY and by stoppage…….Canelo could try and fight defensively picking his moments , making forcing Junior to open up more than is necessary scoring then backpedaling making Floyd come to him ……Its all speculation BECAUSE Saul only true TEST was against Austin we dont know enough about HIM period ……Seen him fight against Lovemore Ndou Matthew Hatton and the like , though all that did was present more questions AS to HOW Canelo would perform in the ring with someone who has the physical attributes size etc …Time will tell …………..

Lil Floyd isn’t KOing anybody at welter or above unless it is someone vulnerable moving up -like Khan. Haven’t you guys been watching lil floyd for the last 6 years? Red isn’t going to be kissing, hugging & dropping his hands like ‘clueless’ Victor Ortiz.

Mayweather will win via UD – Did not need to read article though I will probably check it out later

Posted July 15, 2013 6:42 pm

No way Floyd knocks him out,Floyd will always take the safety first route, if he did not KO Juan or the Ghost two really small men no way will he KO Canelo, Floyd will box to a UD- Peace

Posted July 15, 2013 6:39 pm

The Mad Scientist – This is why I think Floyd will shock people…I feel he’s going to work even harder to land hard/crisp shots to Canelo’s chin…I’m picking Floyd to win via TKO. An accumulation of punches will put a halt to this bout by the 10th, or 11th.

Posted July 15, 2013 6:29 pm

dg – I agree! Floyd via TKO

Posted July 15, 2013 6:27 pm

The Mad Scientist

It gonna be interested to see how Floyd handles banging up against a naturally bigger, stronger younger man..once Canelo feels Mayweather can hurt him with his punches (especially in the pocket) the kid will apply relentless pressure..we already seen the best of Mayweather and what he brings to the ring..I think people are gonna be shocked on how unpredictable Canelo is at this point of his career when he displays his own ability to adapt and adjust inside the ring..will that be enough to get Saul the win remains to be seen but I seriously doubt this fight will be as one sided as some delusional Mayweather fans or Canelo haters/doubters like to think..

I agree, crap article, Roach was not suggesting how Mayweather should fight this fight. He is not critical of Mayweather, he said Mayweather is a beautiful boxer. What he’s saying is that people who appreciate boxing will enjoy the fight while those who prefer slugfests will not. The article writer is putting words into Roach’s mouth and has read between too many lines for his own good. Again, who polices these articles? There’s too much crap getting through the cracks!

Posted July 15, 2013 6:21 pm

John – true

Posted July 15, 2013 6:12 pm

Crap article. Canelo will rehydrate from 152 and weight about 168 fight night, won’t be heavier as no benefit as he loses speed. Mayweather will weigh in at 151, and hydrate to about 153/154…weight difference about 14-15lb….Pacquiao had 17lb-18lb disadvantage over Clottey and Margarito and slugged it out, not to mention the fact most of the guys weight is in his calves

The non-stop defensiveness of the Mayweather fan club is ridiculous. They have to plain lie to make a point…146 is his lowest weight at WEIGH-IN And only when he fights at 147. 170 is canelo’s close to maximum rehydration limit and that’s not factoring in the catchweight! Idiot writer

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Here we go again… whining about pro boxers cutting weight and re-hydrating. Like it or not, it’s a MAJOR part of boxing at every weight class, but HW. If you can make weight, it’s not cheating. Taking PEDs, using plaster wraps and/or lightened gloves is cheating.

FMJ will come in weighing 150-152lbs and Canelo will come in weighing around 165lbs, maybe just over. FMJ still has the reach advantage, which can be very important in a fight like this. He also has other important advantages like Mega-Fight experience, superior defensive skills and speed.

Floyd must put on a clinic, trading with Canelo would just be stupid, them fighting each other is almost stupid.

That’s true, but I believe Mayweather has power to knock him out by 10th-11th round. Accumulation will work by the end of fight.

It’s not a big mystery that Mayweather will box; he admitted that himself. Only a foolish fighter would slug it out with a puncher who outweighes him by 20+ pounds.
