“Cheato’s career falls to the rocks and he loses every important fight when the whole world is keeping an eagle eye on him… His power and chin both evaporate.”

I don’t disagree with you from the point Margarito was exposed as a cheater, Tark. In fact, I agree wholeheartedly. But Mayweather could have called out Margarito long before Mosley did. Also, we can only assume Margarito had plaster-reinforced gloves when he fought Cotto–there is no proof that he did, only speculation. And I’m not saying this to give any credibility to, or to take any away from Margarito’s win over Cotto. But there never has been any concrete proof that Marg cheated in his fight with Cotto.

Hidalgo…. Cheato only beat Cotto by dint of plaster…

Mosley campaigned for a fight with him… THAT was Cheato’s next fight. If he was able to beat 37-year-old Mosley sans plaster he would have gotten the Floyd fight.

LOOK at the cronology.. Cheato smashes Cotto into a clubbing, plaster aided stoppage… Next fight for Cheato: Mosley batters a non-plastered Cheato every single round and and easily knocks him out, without losing a single round… Next fight for Mosley: Mosley fights Floyd and get routed.

Cheato’s career falls to the rocks and he loses every important fight when the whole world is keeping an eagle eye on him… His power and chin both evaporate.

The Mosley fight wasn’t the FIRST fight that Margarito used “loaded handwraps”! His whole CAREER and TITLE as the MOST feared man in BOXING is BASED on him LOADING UP!!

It’s circumstantial that he was LOADED up for Cotto!! So why not Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron too??

Margarito the CHEATER got his payback from a juicer who damn near caved his skull in turning his right eye into a glass eye.

Then the juicer got his payback from Marquez who damn near decapitated him leaving him sleeping on the mat for 10 minutes!!

“Hidalgo…. Cheato WAS exposed. He stopped NOBODY since his plaster was taken away.”

But before he was exposed, Tark everyone thought differently about him. He was exhalted for his toughness, his power, and his fearlessness. Also for his endurance. Who cares if he wasn’t that great of a boxer? He was still winning and he was still considered one of the best welterweights at the time. You are trying to qualify your arguments against Margarito based on what you know about him now. But when he wasn’t known as a cheater, he was the man who almost everyone was saying to watch out for. That’s what I’m talking about and that’s why he DID qualify for a fight with Floyd.

” Cheato NEVER won the lineal WW championship” So? he won the WBA World Welterweight title from Miguel Cotto.

BTW, Ortiz won the WBC welterweight belt when he beat Berto. Mayweather also vacated his IBF welterweight title in June of 2006 after Judah was suspended. Kind of puts a gap in Floyd’s “lineal” championship after he beat Baldomir.

He doesn’t think that…

He’s going to use the Cotto strategy — box Floyd, pop Floyd with jabs, rip Floyd with right leads — like he did the big, slick, tall, and rangy Trout — and attack when he lands a good shot… Only he’s going to do it a lot better than Cotto — just like he boxed Trout a lot better than Cotto did.

I personally would bet mayweather in this fight. If canelo thinks going in there fast and furious like vin diesel is going win the day, well it ain’t. Mayweather is highly technical in skill level and he is going to box canelo’s ears off. Canelo is to green to win on points, I didn’t see anything particularly impressive against trout. Does anyone remember pavlik vs hopkins, youth and strength ain’t going to carry the day against the skill level floyd has, I look for it to be a lopsided point win for floyd along the lines of 9 rounds floyd and 3 canelo. Giving canelo 3 rounds when mayweather decides rest a round here or there.

Hidalgo…. Cheato WAS exposed. He stopped NOBODY since his plaster was taken away.

Cheato only LOOKED like he was walking through punches because he was such a damned poor boxer. It looked like he was walking into everything. He couldn’t box so he was forced to attack. He had to augment his game with cheating so he could keep inept swingers off him.

That plaster made him a threat and forced some lowly fighters to back off. But he won only minor titles.. Cheato NEVER won the lineal WW championship.. Floyd has been the lineal WW champion ever since he beat Carlos Baldomir.. Baldomir beat Judah… who beat Spinks… who beat Mayorga… who beat Forrest… who beat Mosley… who beat De La Hoya… Actually the line went from Forrest because he won the title vacated by Trinidad… Then he unified with Mosley… Then unified with Mayorga… Then Mayorga unified with Spinks… When Judah knocked out Spinks he should have won ALL the titles. But they were being separated again … as usual.

Cheato never qualified for a Floyd fight? BS. Margarito was well-qualified and should have had a fight with Floyd long before he was exposed as a cheater. With the exception of the Santos fight and his slim margin loss to Williams, he was kicking ass across the board before Richardson exposed him as a cheater. After losing to Santos he TKOd Lujan, cintron Gomez and Johnson. Then he KOd Cintron in their second fight followed by a TKO of Cotto. He also beat Clottey by UD. The only top welters left to fight at that time were Mayweather, Mosley, and Pacquiao. But he fought Pac for a vacant jr. middleweight title, at a catchweight, and as a totally weight-drained opponent. Marg would have been much stronger and more resilient had he not fought at a debilitating catchweight–disagree with that and your argument that the 152 lbs catchweight ( in the upcoming Mayweather/Alvarez bout) may work against Canelo holds no water. As I said before, Margarito was a dominant force in the welterweight division before he was exposed as a cheater. He was the talk of the town. He was a Mexican hero and he had a huge following in the U.S. Margarito more than deserved a fight with Floyd. Floyd knew it too.

“Cheato never walked through Dan Santos’s punches …” Yeah he did Tark, in all of those fights. He may not have succeeded in doing so for the entire fight but that IS a large part of Margarito’s fighting style. He is a bulldog who is totally unafraid of being hit. Generally speaking he literally walks through his opponents punches. BTW, the his fight with Santos was stopped and Marg lost by TD due to a cut over his right eye which was caused by a headbutt.

“Don’t you think it makes far more sense that he would’ve started during more dangerous fights?” NO because that scenario would require that no less than 40 separate corners and their fighters failed to detect anything wrong with Tony’s handwraps before Nazim and who is Nazim? he’s no genius. he conducted a basic inspection of Margarito’s wraps and decided to pursue the matter further based on a hunch. also, no less an authority on Margarito’s punching power than Clottey inSisted that Tony had not used anything illegal against him and he would Know. Tony established punchstat records v. Clottey in that bout. Btw, it was a knucklepad that was suspected of being doctored NOT Margarito’s handwraps. i understand the impulse to disregard details and facts to preserve Margarito’s notoriety but i’m not interested in myths or urban legends. i’ll leave that to Pacquiao’s* fanboys. otherwise, ALL of the documented FACTs and testimony indicate that Margarito defeated Cotto fair and square.

Canelo, need to fight small, as Castillio, Cotto, and Oscar(started). Use an up jab mixing the right to the head and body. And when inside use very short crisp combinations. If Floyd fights like he did against Guerrero, Canelo will have to be quick and work to corner Floyd against the ropes. His timing will have to be on point. He will have to out feint Floyd and take what Floyd is not giving him. Everything that Floyd gives him is a setup, Make Floyd move to where you want him not to where he wants to be. If Floyd comes out as he did against Guerrero, Canelo has very little chance of winning. If Floyd fight like he did against Cotto, Canelo will have a better chance of winning.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Strategy for Mayweather against Canelo:

Refuse to get into exchanges with Canelo and avoid getting cornered against the ropes at all cost. Use your superior speed and defensive skills to back pedal, slip and counter. Force Canelo to lead and counter with speed. Must find a home for the jab and lead right all night.

Manny Pacquiao, the only 8 time division boxing champion in the history of boxing. No one brings more excitement, power, athleticism, courage to the boxing circle. When all is said and done, Manny will be remembered as the best, and the guy that Floyd Mayweather feared more than death. Mayweather will be remembered as one good boxer that was feared for his life when the legendary Manny Pacquiao name was mentioned. The record is very clear. Manny Pacquiao agreed to all tests, money and even said so on the ESPN sports network. Mayweather never wanted anything to to with the legend, and never responded. He knew Manny’s speed, style, power, stamina was more than he could handle. Manny Pacquiao has cemented his status as the best of all times bar none. No one has ever accomplished the improbable feat of winning 8 different division boxing titles, no one. That makes him the best ever.

Canelo is predominantly a counter puncher so I guess Mayweather will start on the back foot looking to pot-shot and keeping the fight where Canelo isn’t comfortable… then when Canelo starts taking rests as he is known to do, Mayweather will likely stalk in a similar fashion to how he did in the Mosley fight (though will probably be far more measured about it given Canelo’s abilities to fire back, even when tired).

Canelo doesn’t have the stamina to use a volume punching approach that is often being suggested (not has that ever been a style he’s adopted). What he does have is really explosive bursts of combinations.
Cotto already showed that a good jab can be used successfully against Floyd (though he made the mistake of falling into the inside after the jab… should’ve just made a boring fight and pot-shotted and not engaged).
Canelo’s jab probably won’t be good enough to do the trick, but he could likely take a similar (though boring) approach and stay well and truly on the outside for most of the rounds. Gather some energy and shoot in for a quick, explosive 3 or 4 punch combo (with emphasis on body coz at least he’ll land on something, even if it is just arms, making it less tiring than swinging at air), then get the hell back out (and pre-empt Floyd throwing his straight right retaliation) and relax (i.e. I don’t believe even Floyd is quick enough to counter down the middle of a Canelo full-speed combination).
If he can pull that off without getting caught on the way out, then Floyd will be forced to follow, at which point Canelo can get his counter-punches off (assuming Floyd becomes less cautious if there is urgency to score points).

@te tumbo : “We have experienced inspectors not only watching the hands being wrapped, but also the gloves being put on,” Kizer said”

Inspectors? You mean the same guys who had already let at least one of Margarito’s hands be wrapped without issue in the Mosley fight, before Naazim Richardson asked for the hands to be re-wrapped?
Likewise, those same inspectors never noticed anything with Trinidad. It was Naazim Richardson (again) that pointed it out.

I don’t believe for a second that the Mosley fight was the first time Margarito plastered his wraps. There will never be hard evidence to prove that, but think about it… why would a guy suddenly choose to cheat in the fight that almost everyone expected to be a walk in the park for him? (And I do remember clearly that it was supposed to be an easy win, because Mosley was a 4:1 underdog in betting and I made a good amount of cash off of his victory!)
Don’t you think it makes far more sense that he would’ve started during more dangerous fights?

“[Margarito] was a cheater . . .” PEEJ, new proof? Evidence? anything other than bias and prejudice? otherwise, NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer: “I am as comfortable as I can be that Antonio Margarito’s hand wraps and gloves weren’t doctored during his July victory over Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas . . . We have experienced inspectors not only watching the hands being wrapped, but also the gloves being put on,” Kizer said. “They feel the wraps and sign them and then the gloves and sign them”. speaking specifically about the Tony v. Cotto bout, Kizer said, representatives from the Cotto camp were in Margarito’s dressing room during the entire wrapping of the hands. “They were in there from the beginning,” Kizer said. “Not only them but people from HBO, people from MGM, there are always a dozen or so people in the dressing room . . . I’m pleased with the process we have in Nevada,” Kizer said. “Not only does it stop anybody who tries to do something like that, it stops anybody who is thinking about doing it”. i realize the “mean girl” impulse can become contagious but i expect fight-fans to act like Men not gossip and spread unfounded rumors like “real housewives”.

“Right…., Now Floyd was avoiding P-Will and Cheato… Two guys who couldn’t box… couldn’t jab… couldn’t throw a straight power punch… were wide open for the kitchen sink defensively… and had the brains of a carrot.”

Yeah, but you know as well as anyone Tark, that Cheato would walk right through Mayweather’s punches–just like he has against every other opponent he has fought–and that’s definitely something Mayweather would give serious consideration–and we’re talking pre-Cheato when Antonio was universally recognized as a dangerous force in the welterweight division. As for P-Will, well, Floyd doesn’t like to fight tall fighters. In fact, he has very limited experience in doing so. There’s Paul, a top contender who’s five inches taller than Floyd and has 7 inches more reach than Floyd does. This is the guy that beat Margarito long before Margarito wasted Cotto, or fought Mosley and Pacquiao, and he TKOd Cintron way back in 2005. I don’t see how it’s so improbable that Floyd would have avoided these two fighters.

what began as a simple case of negotiating one-upsmanship was turned into scandal by Pacquiao’s* panicked reaction to Mayweather’s harmless anti-doping request. in any case, Mayweather would’ve thrashed any version of Pacquiao* (or Margarito) that ever stepped into a boxing ring, strictly tested or otherwise. in fact, Mayweather would’ve only improved on every facet of Marquez’s performances v. Pacquiao* withOUT the 4lb fight-night disadvantage. Floyd continues to target prime and undefeated fighters while Punkuiao* declines Marquez’s latest challenge and continues to hawk vulnerable fighters coming off of ring-wars and defeat. perhaps Manny* is simply tuning-up for his next challenge of Marquez . . . in 2016.

Toosalty, you must give Manny credit. He never dodged anyone, and if you’ve ever seen Manny live, he is a very small person. His physique is that of a featherweight, but his speed and power dominated everyone. Manny has a style that is fan friendly, but more than that, he has a certain type of intensity that you don’t see many fighters have. Duran had it, Tyson had it and a few others. In comparison to Mayweather, Manny’s ring entrance is more exciting than any fight Mayweather has ever had. This is the fight game, and all past great fighters have actually fought their opponents in all areas. If Floyd ever fights, he’ll end up exactly like the UFC fighter Anderson Silva did over the weekend. Manny’s popularity is dominant over every athlete in the world not just boxing. And as far as Mayweather fighting top guy, no, his list of Gatti, Baldomir, (old Oscar), (old Mosely), sucker punching Ortiz and others isn’t very impressive. Floyd has had many opportunities to fight Manny regardless of his belief and the belief of his camp that Manny may have used peds. Manny is and has always been clean. By the way, check out Thomas Hauser story on Peds and Mayweather. Seems like Floyd failed three tests, but it was all swept under the rug by GBP and the rest of those cheaters, so Floyd if anyone should be questioned. To this day, no one involved in the cover up has declined to talk about it. Maxboxing.com The Ped Mess.

Canelo may have scored one for fight-fans but i hope that he’s also noted the lack of praise or gratitude for doing so. in fact, there are still those out there who describe Canelo v. Cotto coming off a win against Clottey that many felt clottey won, cotto had already been beaten up by Margarito bcuz of loaded gloves, cotto has not been the same. Clottey good boxed still coimg off the loss to cotto, Margarito coming off a beat down from shane mosley, and a war with cotto, still coming off a loss. Mosley coming off a draw and a loss to FM. Marquez coming off a loss to FM, beats Katsidis but being knocked down not looking to good, beat Likar Ramos “WHO”, then barely loose to Pac. Bradley Pac man won that fight i dont care what no one says the only fight that was considered not coming off a loss or bad fight, then Marquez again we all knew how that ended pac looked good but got careless. NOW RIOS ANOTHER FIGHTER COMING OFF A LOSS. 99% of his fights were staged with names no body that beat the man to be the MAN. He beat names of has beens with the exception of Bradley

Canelo’s strategy for Floyd…, Box Floyd for 8 rounds and build up an overwhelming lead — like you did with the tall, fast, slick, rangy, crafty, skilled, 171-pound, undefeated soutpaw, Austin Trout.

Then attack Floyd for the last 4 rounds like a raging tiger … so you don’t leave anything to Duane Ford clones.

At least that’s the plan. He has 2 million dollars of training expenses or a fight that will draw over 200 million in worldwide revenues … He’s not a kid who wants to waste one training expense dollar on something stupid..

When Saul’s managers said, “Oscar and the whole team believe you need to fight Cotto” replied, “You’re not listening guys. Trout beat Cotto.. Trout is the Champion.. ALL my fans want me to fight Trout.. Read my lips … go make the Trout fight happen. NOW!!!”

Mayweather’s strategy is to stay away from Pacquiao.

Great post REM. Manny Pacquiao is the greatest fighter to have ever lived. The excitement he brings to the ring is unequaled. The legendary destructive hurricane he brought to the ring when he beat everyone of the top guys and ran from no one. Amazing even to this day. Floyd ran and is still running.

Rem

ROTF… Again run with J. M Balcos B.S K.O all y’all want I ain’t buyin. And bottom line is Floyd clearly avoided Pac at all cost so despite the fact that Floyd has what it takes to beat him he has conceded the era to Pac. Him avoiding Pac and Pac smashing records that will possibly stand as long as the human race exist in the universe makes him not only the best of this era but truly a goat.

Floyd just needs to be Floyd…that’s enough.

“. . . the vast majority believe alot of things that aren’t true the majority of people are just stupid”. Too Late REM. i made that statement about 8 years ago to describe Pacquiao’s* boxing-ignorant fanbase and “expert” shills alike. after all, “Anyone that has DUCKED the best fighters and challengers in his era while cherry picking”, catchweight-compromising, and avoiding his primary P4P rivals regardless of favorable purses and conditions, does not deserve to be declared “great” in any way, and this was the case beFore Pacquiao* was FLATTENED and DEMOLISHED in the #1 KO in Boxing History by a 39-year-old Marquez fighting at least two divisions above his optimal fighting weight and outweighed by 4lbs on fight-night. the facts are overwhelming. the rivalrieS are OVER. Marquez Aaand Floyd are Greater. Viva Marquez and Mayweather!

So whats your excuse Rem? still butthurt about Pac getting KTFO i assume. Get over it already. It happens. He is not even ranked on most P4P listings anymore lmao

@Rem and if you gonna argue that Pac is a better fighter than Floyd you might as well commit suicide…There is no hope for you.

Oh and the vast majority believe alot of things that aren’t true the majority of people are just stupid.

Rem

Tark nevertheless there is a great argument to be made for Pac over Floyd-a-void. And if your gonna argue Pac lost to Bradley i couldn’t possibly debate you on the issue.

Rem…. Everybody but you, Hecdog, and a few other diehard Pactards, knows that Floyd is the GOAT…

Pac better concentrate on Rios or he’ll lose 3 straight.

The vast majority of Earthlings will go with the consensus … which is Floyd at #1.

Rem

Can’t fight an avg. of once every 18 month for 7-8 yrs. avoid your prime rival and be best of an era. Floyd conceded this era to Pac and has been scared to win it back. Just the cold hard facts. All of that plus Pac beating a better class of fighter in the lighter weights and at ww makes it barely debatable.

Floyd already had a strategy to beat canelo! Y else would he had taken the fight so fast? He say something he could exploit possibly. We will see come fight night

This pundit posits….., “Floyd must counter with 2 shots instead of one… Floyd mustn’t stand in the pocket admiring his work … Canelo has a sneaky youthful quickness to his punching that could land on Floyd’s chin if he doesn’t get out of there.”

Youthful quickness also works from the outside. As Trout found out.

So two (2) things are wrong with this pundit’s advice. 1. Often you can only counter with one shot—especially if you miss the first one… 2. Often you’re in the pocket and can’t retreat safely. You’ll get caught trying to get “out of there.” Floyd has the best clinching skills in the business. He’ll use them. He’ll retreat on breaks … and when he believes it’s safe.

This pundit posits….., “Canelo will rely on his power punching… Canelo will have to get close to Mayweather… Canelo must cut off the ring … if his stamina lets him.”

Floydiots keep talking about stamina as if it’s an overwhelmng issue for Canelo. It’s only an issue if 152 is the biggest issue. Weight and conditioning are the 2 primary issues the Canelo camp will address.

Canelo didn’t rely on his punching power to beat the tall, rangy, super quick Trouth. He relied on his defense and made Trout come to him …. Canelo didn’t get close… He didn’t focus on a body attack… He didn’t cut off the ring… Saul didn’t fight the fight Trout expected… In the immediate aftermath of the fight Austin said, “I was shocked … I was really shocked”.

Canelo can jab Floyd easier than Trout. He’ll need slick feints to deceive Floyd—like Miguel Cotto used. He’ll need quicker footwork and more speed than he had for Trout. He needs to be lighter, fitter, faster, smoother, and sharper for this fight. I would work on polishing his boxing and footwork to a fine edge in training camp … If the fight is too close—plan “B” should be: hunt Floyd down and smash him out.. But make plan “A” work. Why not test your boxing skills against the GOAT. It’s an exciting challenge … and you sure fooled Trout.

If Pacquiao hadn’t lost to Morales, Bradley and Marquez he WOULD be the greatest of the generation over Mayweather!!

Manny Pacquiao is an amazing athlete and he had a GREAT run but Floyd Mayweather is the ULTIMATE fighter of this ERA and the man that not only figured out but destroyed Pacquiao was one of Mayweathers easiest fights… The fact this Manny got laid out cold by an OLDER version of Marquez is just sad and illustrates the quality gap between he and FMJ…. Pac Man’s weakness is Elite boxing and Mayweather is the MOST elite in that regard… HUGE Pac Fan but he is NOT at the top of the heap….

Canelo needs to forget the right hand, Mayweather just turns away from it so you can’t land it legitimately. He needs to throw plenty of lefts.

Punch

There is only one strategy for Floyd if he doesn’t want to lose his 0; he has to hit and run.
Sad but true, any attempt to fight in the pocket with Canelo spells doom for him. We know Floyd is quicker, sharper ,has better stamina, footwork and head movement that’s all he needs to use to defeat Canelo. Canelo’s only chance in this fight are his power and explosiveness, if floyd can make Canelo work harder by making him come to him then he wins the fight easily, and depending on whenever Canelo’s stamina fails him in the later rounds, he could possibly knock him out. But any way, it’s going to be a close decision for Floyd, most probably a split decision.

Correction! Floyd is not the greatest boxer of his era. That honor belongs to Manny Pac Man Pacquiao. Anyone that has DUCKED the best fighters and challengers in his era while cherry picking and fighting like a scared cat does not deserve to be called great in any way.
