By Marcus Richardson: WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will begin serving his 87-day jail term at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is Mayweather’s punishment for domestic abuse of an ex-girlfriend from an incident that took place two years ago in September 2010.
Mayweather, according to Dan Rafael, will be confined in a tiny 6-foot by 10 foot cell in solitary confident 23 hours per day with one hour of exercise during the initial period of his confinement. It’s possible that Mayweather will be released into the general population of the jail depending on how things go.
Being a celebrity, it might not be wise for Mayweather to be walking around in the general population due to the risk involved. While it’s not a prison, there’s still a chance that Mayweather could be hurt if someone had it in them to go after him for whatever reason.
Mayweather will be going to jail having hauled in over $40 million for his recent win over WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto last month on May 5th. With the 1.5 million pay per view buys that the fight brought in, Mayweather could end up with close to $60 million for the fight. That obviously will make his time behind bars go a lot smoother than a normal person. With good behavior, Mayweather could get out sooner.
Mayweather said to ESPN “You [media] guys seem to be more worried about it than I am. But you’ve got to realize that when you dish it out, you have to be able to take it. That’s just life.”
Mayweather doesn’t seem bothered at all about going to jail, and seems to be open to the new experience without seeing it as a real negative like most people would. That’s the best to look it, because he’ll have a lot of time to think about things while he’s behind bars and it’s best to have a positive outlook when starting a sentence.
