By Robert Brown: In this article I will be discussing how I believe it is time for two young rising Mexican talents Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Saul Alvarez to face each other to determine which of these young Mexicans is going to elevate themselves into super stardom, both of these fighters have yet to face real would class competition.
Alvarez has been facing European and commonwealth level fighters such as Matthew Hatton and Chavez recently won his title against one of the weakest would title holders Sebastian Zbik, both of these fighters do not have very much depth of creditable world class competition on their records and as a result in my opinion this is the perfect opportunity for these two fighters to step up to the plate to face each other in a Mexican summit meeting of rising stars.
With Chavez Jr given the massive task of trying to carry on the name and legend of his father and at the same time trying to establish his own legacy under his own name and with much pressure being put on Saul Alvarez to be Mexico’s next superstar. So far on their records in the eyes of many in the boxing public these two have failed to live to their end of the bargain and a fight between these two would not only be a show case between two of the brightest new talents but it will also show clearly which fighter will move on to greener pastures and which fighter will fail to live up to the expectation and the hype that has been imposed upon them by the promoters and the boxing public.
The boxing public will only take for so long these fighters being protected or they will lose interest and these fighters will lose drawing power and it would be a shame for the careers of two young fighters such as these two to continue on without a significant challenge or major test being imposed upon them.
Chavez’s first defense of his title was meant to be against Ronald Herns the son of boxing legend and multiply world title holder Thomas “Hitman” Herns, who had previously got knocked out by Felix Sturm and many people believe at that time that Herns did not deserve that title shot let alone this one against Chavez, how Chavez and his promoters consider the fight against Herns creditable I have no idea, however luckily sparing the boxing world of this farce Herns injured his right wrist which put the fight off, sparing the boxing world what would have been a joke of a title defense.
Alvarez who I have previously stated faced European competition with the likes of Matthew Hatton who had recently in his latest title defense faced a “C” level brawler with very little skill and versatility Alfonso Gomez, even though Alvarez appeared to start flat, Gomez was disposed of early as expected, even though these fighters currently hold junior middle weight and middle weight world title belt, both Alvarez and Chavez are not considered real world champions in my book because of the lack of world class competition on both their resumes, they’re both young there at relatively the same stage in their careers even though Alvarez has arguably faced slightly higher quality competition, they are clearly both in need of an examination why not face each other.
It is a fight that would consume the whole of Mexico and the majority of the boxing public and I believe this fight is the perfect recipe for boxing at the moment, so my message is to these two fighters come to an agreement and a catch weight if necessary and step up to the plate, let’s see who id the true Mexican warrior and the future of Mexican Boxing.
