TORONTO (June 27, 2011) – Undefeated prospect Logan Cotton McGuinness successfully defended his North American Boxing Association (“NABA”) lightweight title for the second time, taking a 10-round majority decision (96-94, 96-94, 95-95) against veteran Daniel “Canerito” Ruiz, in an entertaining, highly competitive fight on the most recent “Friday Night At The Fights” show (June 24) at Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
The “Friday Night At the Fights” show was presented by United Boxing Promotions, in association with McGuiness’ promoter, Hennessy Sports, and Groupe Yvon Michel.
McGuinness (15-0-1, 7 KOs), fighting in front of a packed house of passionate fans from Toronto, is rated No. 11 by the World Boxing Association (“WBA”). “It’s always good fighting at home,” McGuinness said from his home. “I just finished watching a tape of the fight. The first could have gone either way but I thought I won rounds two through seven easily. I was applying pressure, using my jab and moving inside to hit his body. I got caught with a shot in the eighth. I recovered between rounds and I think we were both low on gas in the ninth. He caught me again in the 10th but I survived. Everybody was telling me to take a knee but I shook my head (no) because I have the heart of a fighter. A tough fight but I’ll come back even stronger because of it. Hey, I’m an Irish fighter…I couldn’t take a knee.”
Ruiz (22-4-1, 16 KOs), fighting outside of his native Mexico for the first time, is a former Mexican Pacific Coast Featherweight Champion who came into last Friday night’s action riding a five-fight unbeaten streak (4-0-1).
“I wouldn’t say I was surprised by how he (Ruiz) fought,” added McGuinness, who dedicated his fight to the memory of Nick Charles (award-winning boxing announcer). “I just didn’t know what to expect because there’s not much footage of him available. He’s a good counter-puncher with his left and right hands. He hurt me with counter-rights when I brought my jab back a little lazy. That was my fault because it was something I should have avoided.”
McGuinness’ next scheduled opponent, former world title challenger Benoit Gaudet (24-2, 10 KOs), fighting out of Quebec, was a special guest at ringside. The arch-rival Canadians are slated to fight August 27 in Canada.
“There’s a lot of video on Gaudet,” Logan remarked. “Preparing properly for him won’t be a problem like it was for this fight. He’s a different fighter than Ruiz, much more of a boxer, a very good boxer at that. He was out-boxing Humberto Soto for the first seven-eight rounds until he got caught in the ninth (TKO9 in 2009 for Soto’s World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight title). I talked with my trainer, Chris Johnson, and we need to bring in more and better sparring partners for this fight (vs. Gaudet), even though I was in great shape (for Ruiz). I think I’ll be the stronger fighter. I’ll need to cut-off the ring and apply pressure and he’s going to want to box and move around.”

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday there will be 2 rings and 2 sessions.
Session one is daily at NOON.
Session two is daily at 6 pm
Thursday and Friday will be the Semi Finals and Finals respectively.
The competition is from 6-10 pm both days

Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson stops Harold Sconiers in the 1st round
Last night, former heavyweight title challenger, Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson, added another win to his record, scoring a first round knockout over Harold Sconiers in the main event at the Elder Entertainment Center in Decatur, Georgia.
It was the third consecutive win, and second by knockout, since Johnson’s decision loss in his first heavyweight championship opportunity against Vitali Klitschko. Johnson who has vowed to return to championship form, is slowly working his way back into the title contention, as he is now ranked #15 in the World Boxing Council (WBC). Look for Kingpin, who improved to 25-1-1, 11KO’s with the win, to be back in action very soon, as he looks to stay active and work his way back into the title picture.
The USA Boxing National Championships Conclude with the Coronation of Eighteen National Champions
(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The 2011 USA Boxing National Championships concluded with a great day of boxing on Saturday at the historic City Auditorium in Colorado Springs, Colo. With Olympic medalists Andrew Maynard, Nate Jones and Andre Ward, as well as legendary coach Freddie Roach, in the attendance the athletes all put on a great performance.
The evening session started with an upset as David Carlton (Cincinnati, Ohio) took a 28-27 decision over three-time national champion Louie Byrd (Denver, Colo.) to win his first USA Boxing National Championships gold medal.
Flyweight Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas) made history on Saturday night, becoming only the third female boxer in history to win six straight national title. Esparza defeated Tyrieshia Douglas (Baltimore, Md.) 27-16 in a rematch of their 2010 showdown.
In front of a hometown crowd, the U.S. Army’s John Franklin (Fort Carson, Colo.) won his first USA Boxing National Championships to the delight of the soldiers in attendance. Franklin won a 13-10 decision over Oscar Cantu (Kingsville, Texas) to win the flyweight crown.
In bantamweight action, Joseph Diaz, Jr. (S. El Monte, Calif.) defended his 2010 crown in a match-up with fellow Californian Joet Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.). Diaz won his second straight title with a 14-11 decision over Gonzalez.
Lightweight Queen Underwood (Seattle, Wash.) was the second female boxer to defend her crown on Saturday. Tiara Brown (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) gave her a tough battle but Underwood won a 23-21 decision to take her fifth consecutive national championship.
The men’s lightweight division showcased a repeat national title as well with Jose Ramirez (Avenal, Calif.) defeating 2010 USA Boxing National Championships bronze medalist Toka Kahn Clary (Providence, R.I.). Ramirez won a 28-20 decision over Kahn Clary to take his second straight national title.
Light welterweight Semajay Thomas (Chicago, Ill.) enjoyed a triumphant return to the boxing ring, winning his first national championship. Thomas put on a commanding peformance in his bout with Thomas Duquette (Boston, Mass.), winning a 23-12 decision and the light welterweight title.
Welterweight Errol Spence (Desoto, Texas) returned to the top spot for the third straight year, winning his bout with Luis Olivares (Glendale, Ariz.), 13-7 to complete the three-peat.
Two former national champions faced off in the women’s middleweight division with Alyssa DeFazio (Peoria, Ariz.) and Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.) battling for the 2011 crown. Yet only one hand could be raised and the 2011 National Championship went to Crews on a 15-13 decision.
Another new national champion was crowned in the middleweight division as Chris Pearson (Trotwood, Ohio) won the gold medal in a closely contested match-up with Edgar Alvarado, Jr. (San Bernadino, Calif.). Pearson pulled out an 11-10 decision in front of his favorite boxer, Andre Ward, to take the middleweight crown.
Due to an injury to Jerry Odom (Bowie, Md.), Jesse Hart (Philadelphia, Pa.) won the light heavyweight title on a medical disqualification.
In the final contested bout of the evening, 2009 National Champion Jordan Shimmell (Hudsonville, Mich.) faced off with Andrew Tabiti (Las Vegas, Nev.) for the heavyweight championships. Shimmell won her second heavyweight title with a 14-8 decision over Tabiti.
As in the light heavyweight division, the super heavyweight bout didn’t take place due to an injury. Jonathan Hamm (St. Paul, Minn.) won the championship on a medical disqualification over Laron Mitchell (San Francisco, Calif.) to put an end to the 2011 USA Boxing National Championships.

Jose “Mangu” Peralta Alejo Signs With Main Events
Jose “Mangu” Peralta Alejo, (6-1, 4 KO’s), of Jersey City, NJ, has signed a promotional agreement with Main Events. In his last fight on October 30, 2010, Jose upset former New York Golden Gloves Champion Christian Martinez who was 4-0 at the time. Mangu is a refreshing addition to the Junior Welterweight division.
“Jose is like a breath of fresh air. He’s not only a likeable guy, he’s got a hunger and enthusiasm that you don’t see too often these days.” said Main Events CEO, Kathy Duva. “It is also such a joy to be teaming up, again, with Pat Lynch and Mikey Red, whom we shared so much success and fun with while working with Arturo Gatti for so many years.”
Jose said, “I am happy to sign with a world class promoter like Main Events. With Pat Lynch as my manager and Mikey Red as my trainer, my team is complete. I feel like I can achieve my goal to become a world champion now.” He added, “I want to thank Main Events for giving me the opportunity to fight on the July 23rd Judah – Khan card.”
