Promoter Frank Warren today won the purse offers to stage Ryan Rhodes next defence of the European Light-Middleweight Championship against mandatory challenger Lukas Konecny of the Czech Republic. Warren’s bid beat Konecny’s promoter, SES Sports Events, into second place with a another bid from Hatton Promotions trailing behind in third. However, had the Hatton bid been successful, it’s validity would have been questioned as it was not endorsed by the British Boxing Board of Control, by way of a simple fax, as per the published rules..
Warren said today; “I am delighted, absolutely delighted in fact, to secure the rights to this fight and also gain home advantage for Ryan Rhodes who I also manage along with Dave Coldwell. I look forward to announcing a date and venue for this fight very shortly and I am sure it will kick off the new season in style along with the many other big title fights I have planned.”
MCDERMOTT IS WORLD’S UNLUCKIEST BOXER
FRANK MALONEY believes John McDermott must have done wrong in a previous life.
Few heavyweight have has such bad luck as McDermott who goes for revenge against English heavyweight champion Tyson Fury at the Brentwood Centre on Friday 25th June.
There was widespread condemnation of the verdict when Manchester’s Fury was gifted a points decision when they met last September.
That wasn’t the start of his bad luck as a boxer and no wonder he came close to quitting after that setback.
Twice he has dropped narrow verdicts against Danny Williams and even his first pro loss against Nikolay Popov in September 2003 came because of an injured ankle.
His promoter Maloney who stages the Conspiracy Fury bill said: “John must have been a rascal in a previous life.
“John is the unluckiest man in the heavyweight division and one of the best talents when he believes in himself.
“He has gone the distance with Danny Williams twice and was robbed in both fights. He was definitely robbed in the first Fury fight.
“It was a disgrace to British boxing and hopefully that will be corrected when John gets the chance to prove it.”
Maloney believes there will be justice for John in the 12 round rematch adding: “I have no problem with whoever is appointed an official.
“I will only object if Terry O’Connor who was the referee in the first fight is given a role.”
In a big clash of prospects Southern Area heavyweight champion Larry ‘The War Machine’ Olubamiwo meets North Shields Dave Ferguson (12-2) in a British heavyweight title eliminator.
Other heavyweight bruisers on the bill includes Olympic bronze medallist David Price (6-0), Tom Dallas (10-0) and much talked about debutant Dillian ‘The Villain’ Whyte.
Also boxing on Maloney’s latest knockout show is are Ashley Sexton (9-0-1), Menay Edwards (3-0), Tony Hill (4-1) and Lewis Pettit (1-0).

MALONEY AND MUNROE TOAST EUROPEAN SUCCESS
Frank Maloney named European Promoter of the Year.
British promoter Frank Maloney has won the title of European Promoter of the Year for the second year running and was left toasting a double success after Rendall Munroe was named ‘Boxer of the Year’.
After a self-confessed ‘nightmare’ 2009 the Chislehurst based promoter has endured a change in fortune that has seen some brilliant promotions and courageous appearances between the ropes.
After first winning the title back in 1998, Maloney scooped the award last year and has shared the trophy with Sauerland Promotions this time around.
Unfortunately Frank will not be able to make the trip to Madrid to pick the award up in person. He explained:
“I think it’s a great honour to be acknowledged for a second year in a row. I look forward to continuing working with the EBU, an organisation which I find very professional.
“With their help we managed to achieve the mandatory position for Rendall Munroe in the WBC.
“I’m sorry I cant be there to pick it up in person but I was already committed to opening up a gardening fete in St Celia’s home.”
Rendall Munroe has enjoyed a perfect twelve months and has now defended the European super bantamweight title on five separate occasions. ‘The Boxing Binman’ will now step up to challenge for a world title against the unbeaten Japanese fighter Toshiaki Nishioka.
