UK Boxing: Lenny Daws; Erick Ochieng; Judgement Day III

LONDON (Jan 27th, 2010) British Champion Lenny Daws is looking to retain his Light Welterweight title against Former European Lightweight Champion Jason Cook at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Friday 12th February 2010 on a Matchroom Sports in association with Hennessy Sports show. Daws v Cook will be headlining the event which will be shown live on Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports HD 1 from 10pm. Daws said “I took some time out after my win against Barry Morrison back in September when I reclaimed the British title, but I have been back in training for some time now and all has gone to plan and sparring has been great..

“To defend my title against a former European Champion is a real challenge but a good move for me, I am going to use this opportunity to gain experience in the ring with someone who has been there and done it. I know he’s only recently back after taking a few years away from the sport, but he’s shown that he still has the hunger and desire to take on the best in Britain as he recently proved in Prizefighter, but he knows that to get his hands on the famous Lonsdale belt for the first time he’s going to have to beat the best.”

Mick Hennessy said “Lenny’s matured in to a top quality pro and I feel 2010 is going to be a real big year for him. Lenny has a big engine and an all action style; I feel he’s going to be a very hard fighter to beat over 12 rounds. We will certainly not be overlooking Jason Cook as he’s an explosive and very dangerous fighter. This is a great fight for the prestigious British title”.

Daws added “Tickets are selling fast and I expect a packed York Hall shouting my name on the 12th February”

The undercard will include the vacant English Light-Welterweight title between Michael Grant v Steve Williams.

Tickets for the bout priced £30 unreserved and £50 ringside and are available from Matchroom Sports

The Eagle Has Landed – KO Performance by Erick Ochieng

Last Friday, at the Brentwood Centre in Brentwood, Essex, rising Super Middleweight star Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng decisively stopped Plymouth’s Jon Harrison in the second round. The resounding way that Ochieng dealt with his vastly more experienced opponent was testament to the faith that promoter Frank Maloney and trainer Brian Lawrence have in this exceptionally talented 22 year old from Stoke Newington.

Harrison tried all that he could to stop the stylish Ochieng from utilising his fight plan. Ochieng was patient though, constantly working away on Harrison’s body until the opportunity arose to finish him off with the most vicious left hook in the second round.

On Monday morning Ochieng was straight back in training at Rooney’s Boxing Gym , in Southwark, South London, to prepare for his next fight, which hopefully may be as soon as February.

Following his workout session at the gym ‘The Eagle’ sat and spoke about the fight. “First of all I want to thank God for the victory. It was good fight, you know it was only the second round when I stopped him.

He kept on holding, but in the second round I caught him with a left hook, it was a quick left hook and he went down for the count and couldn’t beat the count.

I’m hoping to have my next fight very soon. Matchroom sports are having a show at York Hall on the 12th February. We have to wait for confirmation but I’m really hoping we get it.

It’s all good I’m already back in the gym today (Monday) and training is going really well. I feel good and I’m in good shape. I’m ready, I’m ready for the fight if we get it. I’ll stay fit and on top of my game.”

Ochieng then went on to talk about fellow Rooney’s Boxing Gym mates Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa, who controversially lost his British Bantamweight crown to Jamie McDonnell, and Ben Murphy who beat Lee ‘Cooky’ Cook to take the BBBofC Southern Area Lightweight title. “Ian Napa is unbelievable, such a great fighter. Ian won that fight. He fought great and clearly controlled the fight, yet two of the judges saw it different. Hopefully he will still get to fight for the European title in March.

I was also ringside when Ben fought. He was strong and the fight was good. He pressured him and threw lots of body shots. Ben won that fight fairly and squarely.”

If all goes well Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng’s growing legion of fans will indeed get to see him in action again next month, at the Matchroom Sports promoted event at York Hall in Bethnal Green on the 12th February, If so he will be on the undercard of the exceptional triple title spectacular featuring the BBBofC British Lightweight battle between Lenny Daws and Jason Cook, the vacant EBU-EU Middleweight fight between Grzegorz Proksa and Affif Belghecham and the vacant BBBofC English Light Welterweight showdown between Michael Grant and Steve Williams.

Dead Man Running Movie To Sponsor London Fight Show Judgement Day III On 27th February

Rooney’s Boxing Gym, the promoters of the highly successful Judgement Day White Collar Boxing series, announced today that Revolver Entertainment are to sponsor Judgement Day III, which takes place at the all new multi sports venue T47, St Thomas Street, London SE1 on February 27th.

Revolver Entertainment, who sponsored Judgement Day II back in November ’09 with TYSON THE MOVIE Platinum Knockout Edition DVD, are sponsoring Judgement Day III to promote the upcoming release, on the 1st March, of the Brit Thriller DEAD MAN RUNNING, on DVD and Blue Ray Disc.

Dead Man Running, which is directed by Alex De Rakoff and starring Monet Mazur, 50 Cent, Danny Dyer, Brenda Blethyn, Tamer Hassan, Blake Ritson, Bronson Webb, Scot Williams, Robert Stone and Joe Egan, is a proper British action thriller of the Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels variety.

Reformed ex-con Nick is given 24 hours to come up with £100,000 by notorious New York gangster and loan shark Mr Thigo. As a guarantee, Thigo’s men hold Nick’s wheelchair-bound mother hostage, leaving him no choice but to comply. Enlisting the help of his best mate, Bing, the boys embark on a frantic race against the clock. Their mission takes them from the dog tracks of East London to the underground drug scene of rural Manchester as they try every trick and scam in the book to get the cash before it’s too late.

The Judgement Day series, which was launched in September ’09, took the London Boxing scene by storm. The first Judgement Day event not only attracted City fighters from around the World but also featured an all female match-up and was the first event of this type to include an MMA bout.

Rooney’s Boxing Gym decided to add extra elements, of live music, Burlesque and a special screening of TYSON THE MOVIE, to the already excellent show format and just 56 days after the inaugural event, on the 25th November ’09, Judgement Day II took place.

As before the event was sold-out and this time the crowd were not only royally entertained by six professional standard fights but were also treated to a very special tribute to the world of boxing by Burlesque star MISS GIGI RAMONE followed by an amazing set by the outrageous, Glam Punk Rock band SPIDERBABY that literally bought the house down.

Judgement Day III, which will take place at the new T47 venue, has already attracted some of the UK’s top White Collar fighters including Middleweight sensation ADAM MCCANN, who will be headlining the show, and Welterweight star ED STOREY, who will be co-feature. In addition to the eight bout Boxing card there will also be two Mixed Martial Arts bouts organised by BANDOGS MMA.

Judgement Day III, sponsored by DEAD MAN RUNNING, will be held at T47, 47 St Thomas Street, London SE1 3QX on Saturday 27th February 2010. Doors open at 7.00pm.

Tickets for Judgement Day III are priced £15 (Standing), £30.00 (unreserved seated) and £50.00 (V.I.P.) and are available from Rooney’s Boxing Gym, 895/896 Holyrood Street, London SE1 2EL or call 020 7403 6113 or on the door from 7.00pm
