Edner Cherry Returns With Impressive TKO; Mormeck Outpoints Maddalone in France

Thursday night at the Commerce Casino, Los Angeles California, former NABO and WBC USNBC lightweight champion Edner Cherry, 25-6-2 (13), returned to the ring with a very impressive stoppage of Jovann Jones, 9-8 (4), at the 1:14 mark of the third round. In his first fight under the TKO Boxing Promotions banner and first fight since losing a shot at the WBC light welterweight title by a close decision to Timothy Bradley, Cherry came in ready to take business, in great shape and it showed..

Cherry, showing that he is ready to climb back into title contention, dropped Jones in each round. In the third round, referee Ray Corona called an end to the bout after Cherry dropped Jones at the 1:14 mark. For Cherry, it was his first stoppage since his tenth round KO of former WBC lightweight champion Stevie Johnston in August 2008.

Cherry has stated that he feels stronger and more comfortable at 134. When he challenged WBC lightweight champion Timothy Bradley for the title, he did so at lightweight (139-140). Cherry feels that he has the tools and strength to not only compete, but win a world title at junior lightweight. 2010 may be the year the “Cherry Bomb” blows up the junior welterweight division.

MADDALONE TURNS IN ANOTHER WARRIOR LIKE EFFORT

Before last night’s battle against Jean Marc Mormeck, Vinny Maddalone had promised to turn in an exciting and entertaining performance. After eight hard fought rounds not many people could argue against his statement.

Maddalone took the fight straight to the former two-time cruiserweight champion. The fight, which took place at the Halle Carpentier in Mormeck’s native Paris, France, had the packed house in attendance on the edge of their seats for the majority of the contest.

In the end Mormeck was the winner on the judges score cards, winning by scores of 77- 75, 79-75, 79-73, but the warrior Maddalone, won over many of the fans. With the victory Mormeck improved to 34-4, 22KO while Maddalone drops to 32-6, 23KO.
